I love my Mc Alister. The leather sole is very comfortable. I attended a function for nearly half a day and still very comfortable to stand on. Going to get two more sets of AE dress shoes. For daily I have two sets of AE loafers with rubber sole.

Excellent review Tom. I have many Allen Edmonds shoes of which most are boots. I find that the Dainite sole while durable and excellent for rain it is not very cushiony and can be hard on the knees and feet if you wear them for a long time. Also they are not the best for slick icy surfaces. AE also makes boots with their XL Extra Light rubber lug sole and this is a great alternative. They do dress down the boot so not the best if you want to keep it dressy but they provided excellent cushion, elements protection, and that grip with slippery surfaces such as ice and metal stairs. You may want to get a pair like that and see what you think

Thank you! Yes, I’ve found dainite can be a bit hard sometimes, which is why I prefer the double leather sole.

Great video. For me, another con to the leather sole is the fact that they’re very noisy (clickity clack) on surfaces hard flooring.

Good point. I guess the clickity-clack can be a "pro" or "con" depending on the person. I've been on forums where that sound is looked at as a badge of honor. @@tommilano5431

Hi Tom. Great video review on the soles. I was actually hoping you would at some point discuss the rubber sole option briefly mentioned at the end. I actually own a couple of shoes and a pair of Chelseas which have their dual leather/V-tread rubber customization. I find them to be very comfortable, though I need to get my Chelsea boots re-soled pretty soon

I did another video where I added rubber soles to the wingtip boots. It’s a great option, and the shoe won’t need a resole as much. Thanks for watching!

I bought the Allen Edmonds Hamilton Wingtip Waterproof Chukka Boot, it was dull looking at first but after a nice treatment of cream polish, a few brushing and wear the quality of the leather surpassed all my others in my collection, including, C&J, Carmina and TLB ( except for the stitching and detail quality, Carmina holds that title). I get complements over this pair, but I’m disappointed that the new Chukka boots that just came out are thrash, half the leather thickness and quality, it feels like plastic, World different from the chunk full of leather they used to offer before.

I’ve heard that Allen Edmonds leather has gone down in quality in the past few years. I haven’t experienced this, although I have only been wearing them for about 7 years or so. Great to know that the leather on your Hamilton surpasses other shoes! Thanks for the comment.

Sartorials will turn their nose up at you saying the AE Strand can be dressed up. It can be actually a dress casual shoe meaning no more than a blazer and khakis but shouldn’t go with a suit. I’m not gonna lie I’ve done it myself, But it’s not right, and I’ve only done it because I wear my brogues as rain shoes As they should be, because that is Their intended purpose actually. When you wear dress shoes, you are at a point where you change out of shoes multiple times and one day for different purposes.

Yes, the more brogue-ing, details, and lighter the color, the more casual the shoe! If the strand was in a darker brown, it would be more dressy, and if the McAllister was in the walnut, it would be more casual! But a lot of this stuff isn't as rigid as the rules were back in the day.
