With 7 MW schools remaining we need at least 1 more. Top choices (in my opinion) are Grand Canyon, UT El Paso, New Mexico State, Texas State, in that order

"How is this new PAC12 any better than the Mountain West when it comes to media rights?" How do people not understand this, its mind numbingly simple: The new PAC is REMOVING the 6 worst brands in the MW. Brands that add little-to-no revenue, but still take a piece of the pie. The new PAC is REPLACING them with the 2 best remaining G5 brands (OSU and WSU) The new PAC will now have a slightly larger pie, and have to split it amongst less teams. = MORE REVENUE PER SCHOOL

But it's not going to be that much more revenue per school. They'll still won't be a Power 5 conference. McMurphy made a good point about having a TV deal set, all the speculated revenue is just that...speculation. A ton of Oregon State and Wazzu fans on Twitter were saying this and that without understanding the complexities of conference realignment. It's not just about adding schools! But I understand they were trying to add the best AAC schools, but USF and East Carolina were always gonna be stretches.

@@kasoniakisanganiI think Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, San Diego State and now Utah State would beg to differ. They’ll probably get in the ballpark of $9-$12 million. No one thinks the PAC will be a power conference. They (and me) are hoping they can build a best of the rest conference. Merging with the MW doesn’t do that, but taking their best and a few from other conferences does that.
@DayOneRobАй бұрын
IMO, when UNLV and Gonzaga join the PAC, they will be able to better solidify their TV revenue deal and then come back to the drawing board with AAC schools. The other thing Bret McMurphy is missing the mark on is this… he said why would the TV contract be more than the MW per school? It’s simple, the PAC is doing all it can to trim the fat and create better more desirable matchups in competition. More desirability equals more attention and money.
@mymusic8414Ай бұрын
Fans of this new PAC 12 are going to be very disappointed in the tv contract. It'll probably be around 6 to 8 million per school with way less exposure than the american conference. Ratings and viewership wise none of those teams in the new PAC 12 moves the needle. I remember when the former PAC 12 commissioner was promising USC and UCLA that a solid tv contract was coming but never happened.

Take the PAC12 name off and the conference is STILL superior to any other G5 conference simply because it has no bottom end. It’s seven deep. The likely worst team in the PAC was one of the best in the MWC. Fresno, Boise, OSU, and WSU would all smoke any top G5 in any other conference.

PacX needs to add some eastern schools with quality media viewership numbers: UConn Toledo AppSt Marshall Ohio Perhaps further add: Texas St Ga State Coastal Carolina Consider: Liberty James Madison La Tech (will tweak Tulane) This combination will tweak Tulane, Memphis, Tulsa, ECU, USF. You can revisit them with a differnt hand, perhaps with a media rights agreement in hand with a prorata clause the covers the AAC programs.

I agree, the money is in moving away from the PAC 12 branding. Understandably Nevada and Texas St would jump at the offer. UNLV think it has some leverage which is why they said no to the PAC. PacX is doing what the Big12 presidents lacked the insights & the guts to do, what in the long run, could have saved Big12 from failure down the road. Big12 is back to being the most vulnerable conference to further P2 expansion. Big12 gets poached before ACC now, without major backfill prospects.
@jing-xt2tgАй бұрын
It wasn't a lack of guts to not add whatever school you support that you are mad about the Big 12 not adding, as they would have cost more than what they were worth. The Big 12 is sitting pretty with no real outliers one way or the other. Could they lose Utah or Kansas at some point? Maybe, although I doubt it, because the B1G and SEC don't really need them. Even if they did, they could easily just stick at 14.

If they get UNLV and Air Force that gets them to 9 and similar money to the MWC because they don't have the MWC bottom feeders to share the media deal with. That's why they're gonna get more $ per school... now is it going to be close to triple what those schools get in the MWC? I doubt it, but per school it will be more. A bit suprised UTSA isn't in the mix, but they're probably going to just stay in the AAC for some of the reasons discussed. The remaining MWC schools can still survive though, they have options. UTEP + NMSU are ripe for the picking and will bolt from CUSA in a heart beat to join a more western league, and between the Montana schools, Idaho, UC Davis, Eastern Washington, and the Dakota schools including North Dakota St. I feel like they'll get enough schools to bite from that group to get to the 8-9 schools they need to keep it all together.

The PAC name and brand could have retained some material value as a Tier 2, but it will quickly wither as a Tier 3. The Southern comes to mind. Again, create a trust to hold the assets, dissolve, and hope a new PAC can return that deserves the name.

Have we not learned anything from conference realignment??? Conferences don't dissolve no matter how many teams are left. CUSA was down to three teams and survived, the PAC 12 was down to two teams and they'll survive. Exit fees paid by leaving members is simply too much to let go by the waste side, and leaving members can't vote to dissolve the conference. About the TV media deal, the projections didn't stop the AAC schools from joining the PAC 12, the AAC exit fees prevented them from leaving the AAC. The example given by McMurphy regarding the projections of potential TV media deal was flawed. Whatever number the PAC 12 told the 4 AAC schools what they would get if they joined came from the potential media partners, not a made up projection number from the PAC 12. No different than the SEC going to ESPN and asking them what could they get for adding UT and OU. ESPN gave them a number and that is what the SEC presented to OUT. The 4 AAC schools can be revisited down the line, although I don't believe USF would ever join the PAC 12. They'll have other options better than the PAC 12.
