For more high end stuff, the Highwind Direwolf is a great pedal with alot of tone control and variable clipping based on a TS. I am really glad I bought the 6L6 version. It is not so harsh and spiky. Could you try this amp with EL34 tubes?
@BaritoneGoatStudio6 ай бұрын
I assume the EL34s could be swapped in, but I am not sure of the internal bias configuration. the main thing I would make sure of is the output transformer can handle the draw from the tubes, but I think KT77s are hotter than EL34s anyway. could be wrong.

Great demonstration and review! Congrats! I’m setting up my mind for the Fireball 25! Just a few questions, if you don’t mind: 1. Would you prefer the classic version, with 6L6 tubes, or the SE with K77 tubes? - would you match this head with the 1x12” cab or the 2x12”..? Considering that I don’t use it so much in live situations and I live in an apartment.. big apartment but still with people below. If you think the 1x12” is enough to match the Fireball 25 - due to the fact it’s a 60W cab - I’ll consider it instead of the 2x12”. Still, maybe the sound pressure of the 2x12” is the same of the 1x12”, at low volume?
@BaritoneGoatStudio2 ай бұрын
I like the sound of a 2x12 overall, but if you are using in an apartment, a 1x12 using the power soak would be better. At half power a 2x12 won’t fill out the same. Even at full power as low volumes the 1x12 might sound better. But if you plan to ever open it up, a 2x12 is fun. In terms of the 6L6 version, the only thing I have seen with other comparisons between the two versions is that the clean channel sounds a bit louder and more forward, but the high gain channels seem pretty identical with maybe a little more lows from the KT77s, but it is subtle.

Great review (y) how does the lead channel clean up when you turn down the volume on a guitar?
@BaritoneGoatStudio6 ай бұрын
@@majkon93 it really depends on the guitar. Most of my passive guitars I run audio taper pots on the volume, and can get it to clean up ok as long as I disengage the built in noise gate, and roll the threshold back on my upfront noise gate. The lead channel has a lot of gain, but with the mid boost you will keep the meat of the sound with the volume rolled back. You also would probably get the most from rolling the channel gain back and pushing the channel volume for more round cleaner edge of breakup stuff. You can get more compression and grit from the clean channel of you dime the gain, it just takes a bit to get there. A lot of clean headroom.

@@N6J6R6 the tube architecture of a KT77 is compatible with EL34s. I don’t think you could use 6L6s without modification. I am unsure if these amps have a fixed bias or not. Typically a 6L6 is interchangeable with a 5881 or KT66 tube.

@BaritoneGoatStudio6 ай бұрын
@@johnasbury3744 yeah. This is technically a lunchbox head, kinda. It is bigger than many on the market. But, with a full sized power section, it isn’t really comparable to other amps that use el84s. The volume gradient and push is closer to a 50w head. In Europe, where they are made, they only cost about $800 US. The fireball 100 is only about $1,900 for two more power tubes.
