There are a lot of responses to videos of mine out there on the youtubes. That’s the great thing about youtube and the internet in general. Literally anyone can make their voice heard.
Although that isn’t quite true. Just because you make a video, doesn’t mean it’s actually going to be seen. You have to either get lucky with the algorithm, get shouted out by a larger channel or on reddit or something (which doesn’t always result in a lot more views), or already have a large following.
The response videos regarding me that I’ve seen mostly have a lot of views and come from the same sources, channels I’ve responded to in the past. But there are actually a lot of videos from much smaller channels. And just because a channel is small or a video hasn’t reached many people, doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile. I’m not perfect, I definitely make mistakes. So I thought it’d be fun to check out some of these videos and see if they're any good. Maybe I'll learn something!

Having said that, I do think some of these people misrepresenting you shouldn't receive the satisfaction of having their name more widely publicized. What good is it to use someone's name and face in a negative way like how they did to you, after all?

Can confirm that your approach of encouraging people to start with reducing meat consumption and even be mostly vegan helped me to go from omnivore to strictly vegan. I felt I couldn’t be vegan because I love cheese. Then I heard you say something like, why not just be vegan (or vegetarian?) except the one food you can’t give up. So I did that. I also discovered some great vegan cheeses. Once I’d gone vegan in all these other areas, I realized I didn’t really need cheese. Been 100% vegan since last May. Your logical approach worked for me.

Pretty much the same for me. Except the food I had trouble giving up was Flamin' Hot Cheetos... which I feel like is the trashiest possible food to keep. But yeah I was totally vegan except cheetos and around the end of last year I finally decided to stop buying them and it's going pretty well so far. I do gaze longingly at them when I'm in the chip aisle, though. lol

David ditto for me! Her channel is the reason I started out on this journey. I started by cutting out red meat, then went pescatarian, then vegetarian, then started cutting out dairy. Finally cut out eggs and now I’m vegan. The slow gradual adaptation was what helped me actually go vegan, and the fact that a popular vegan KZbinr supported that really encouraged me. I don’t think I would’ve successfully went vegan if I hadn’t gradually transitioned.

Why do some of these people not seem to get that there is a happy (and healthy) medium between no oil and frying everything?

the purists would probably say something like: "But medium is bad, because look at all the people around you and how unhealthy everybody is and most people are too fat, so if you want to be healthy you have to do things that look extreme to the average person." i think most of them need a health scare or some kind of burnout before they realize that their behavior makes them miserable.

Honestly my bigger question is, What does it have to do with the morality of veganism? If say, I wanted to eat however I felt while remaining vegan and became obese, in what way is that immoral in regards to animal welfare? "Health" in regards to a reason to be vegan will always be a farce because you can find healthy people across an enormous spectrum of diets.

i personally agree with you, but then again there's other people who need to be confronted more aggressively or at least I've seen a few vegans saying that this is how they turned vegan and that the "gentle" approach didn't really do anything for them. so as far as that goes, i guess it's a good thing that both parties are present on youtube. still, criticising other vegan youtubers for not being pushy enough and ultimately tell them they're not really vegan and/or meat apologists is a real shitty thing to do and certainly doesn't help the movement.

Her telling me what is good makes me buy plant based when easily available. I went to buy my olive oil buttery spread the other day and didn’t see it, but there was a store brand plant based brand so I went “sure”. My thing is I hate the treatment of animals in the dairy and meat industry, and the environmental impact of animal product consumption, so, I gotta at least try to do better. I think this comment is really important! Like, sure, some people can be "scared" (I don´t know wich word to use here, maybe "chocked") into being vegetarian or vegan. Like all those girls in my school who bacame vegetarians when we saw a video on how slaughter works (even if it was just for a few weeks). But then that empathy-numbness thing often kick in. But to make totally informed choices for a substainable lifestyle for yourself as well as for animals and the planet takes time. Having it come from someone like UV in a clear, science based, kind and in a no pressure sort way is just.. gold. I am not a vegan (yet, maybe?) but I find that my life do change a little all the time whenever I find more information on what my choices really means and this channel has a lot to do with it. Congrats on your anniversary! :)

I was vegan since age 14 (and vegetarian since childhood on my own accord bc of my love of animals). Due to a rare and unforeseen genetic condition, I had to have my colon removed 3 years ago (ileostomy). I tried my best to be vegan after my surgery, and it nearly killed me due to the fiber and subsequent nutritional deficiencies I endured bc of my altered anatomy. Trust me, I tried it all. Veganism has always been incredibly important to me, so seeing that the diet was now incompatible with my body was beyond upsetting. Unfortunately, I had to include some animal products into my diet, but in every other way possible, I strive to live the Vegan lifestyle and principles. Some people literally can't eat a vegan diet. But they can support the vegan message in other ways, and I think this should be accepted and not hated against. Ive always been the type of person who applauds those whom are making the best effort. But there are way too many vegans who insist on perfection and 100000% compliance, which is literally impossible in this world. Am I vegan? Technically no. But in my heart, I will always support animal rights and the environment.

I would identify as hardcore reducitarian? I avoid doing harm in any way I can, but I'm also a chronic illness sufferer and my liquid formula is pre-digested using literal animal produced enzymes. I can't avoid that. I tried on multiple occasions (whenever a company comes out with a vegan alternative), and it got me incredibly sick so far. Will I try again? Hell yes! Will I switch back if it doesn't work out? Of course! Will I beat myself up for it? Nope. My kids aren't vegan either. I use cruelty free alternatives in cooking for them whenever possible, but if they want bacon, even after discussing the cruelty that comes with it, I buy it for them and they'll cook it for themselves. I'm not them, and since they're teenagers, being a role model (and fostering a good relationship!) is more important for me than purity. So yeah, hypocritical. Human existence is complicated. I genuinely feel that every little thing helps. Every breakfast cereal eaten with soy yoghurt is better than bacon and eggs. If it's six days a week, great! Every pea protein burger consumed instead of a beef one is awesome. Do I feel labeling myself a vegan would be wrong? Yes! I'm trying. Maybe appreciating that is enough? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I totally agree that it isn't helpful at all not to encourage people who try their best and attractivism is in most cases way more effective than blaming people! On the other hand, I understand how she couldn't imagine eating just one slice of cheese out of philosophical reasons. I've read Peter Singers books and while he is quite zero sum, I do understand how to reduce harm and trying to live a moral life in this way as philosophical "source of meaning" to life. Again, I definitely agree with your argument and maybe I'm implying something she didn't mean, that is just my line of thinking (I think everyone can enrich their lives in some way with a sense of meaning, created by their values and people and activities dear to them(if hey want to), aiming to create the least amount of suffering possible is mine, I guess). @@luanaschmid2009 Yes totally agree with you! The least amount of suffering (100% vegan) should be our goal as it is objectively as a society more ethical. However I find the vegan ''purist'' like TheTofuGirl doing more harm than good beause they can't accept the fact that human psychology have a part in veganism. And so, approaching people with all or nothing makes them reject veganism without even trying (or trying it in a way they can't substain, which will lead them to stop veganism), which than cause more harm to animals. It’s not “perfect” but I don’t think they should be shamed and ridiculed by other vegans.

Cheese is literally an addictive substance. we’re essentially relearning how to eat and to live our life’s. We are breaking away from deep set patterns set in our brains. With that being said I called myself a vegan when (used to) I gave into PMS cravings and got a chocolate treat that’s definitely not vegan. It is easier to stop fighting human feelings and reactions and understand that so long as you’re making better choices the next time what is the harm? No one is saying to have a monthly allowance of cheese or steak but understanding that we all do the best we can. That’s all anyone can ask and half this battle is mindset. I stuck to the lifestyle more when I was still using the term when I may not be a 100%. Some may have a huge problem with that and that’s okay. It is a whole mindset principle. When I was making bad choices I used to beat myself up and claim I wasn’t vegan and didn’t care about the animals. That thought processes ended up just having me go back to square one because I must not be vegan if I made the wrong choice right? Wrong. So long as I keep trying to make the better choice that makes me vegan. At the end of the day all that matter is the animals. I’d rather have a lot of people making imperfect steps towards the same goal than have a handful of militant chastising vegans.

@@FireKittenss I quit cold turkey, but I agree. Many who do can lead to binging on animal products and then give up. Plus people can try to be as vegan as much as possible, but some people (those in poverty) live in food desserts and/or rely on food kitchens, so physically cannot be vegan entirely. That isn't most people but it's important to recognize that a vegan diet can and is a privilege. I think avoiding it as much as possible is still good. Doing your absolute best is what matters.

@@chloro8306 there's other foods than just animal products that get thrown out. I was also feeding the rest of my family. So no, it's not the same. So nice that you have your choice and privilege, but sometimes you have to take what you can get when you can't afford food and you happen to work in a kitchen that allows left overs to be taken home so it's not wasted. I used to live in China and I am a vegetarian and was when I lived there!! I found it very easy to be vegetarian in China, but I will say the hardest part is pork in dishes you think are meat-free. Dishes like mapodofu, it seem like since it's a tofu dish it'll be meat-free, but it's got pork. Its also easy to cut out dairy because it is not traditional in chinese cooking, but then eggs are prevalent, so going vegan might be difficult while you are learning the language. Have you learned how to tell people you are a vegetarian in Mandarin? I remember saying "cu sai" like telling people that I eat "cu sai" (vegetables). Once you figure out how to say you don't eat meat, that will make things easier and if you have any chinese friends or coworkers, they will likely be able to help. Good luck!!!! Also, the vegan population is at least 10x that number. Statistics historically have been around 2%. It is a growing demographic though. The size of animal agriculture is relative to the demand for animal agriculture. IE. If you boycott animal ag, animal ag will shrink by a factor of yourself. If you believe that you are morally responsible for your actions, it follows that it matters how you act in the world. Eg. Do you believe it is wrong to murder other humans? If yes, it would matter to not go around murdering people. The same applies to animal ag, if it is morally relevant to you.

Non-vegans were hating on me for being vegan even though I never tried to push my diet on others and then my vegan friends would tell me I'm not a real vegan because I would buy meat at the grocery store for my partner. For me personally, I think being vegan, vegetarian, plant-based needs to be a personal choice. I buy all the groceries in my house and prepare the meals. My partner does not understand why I don't meat but he supports me. And now he is accepting and incorporating more meat substitutes into his diet(yay!). YOUR APPROACH IS WHAT MADE ME GO VEGAN. All these purity obsessed vegans have had NO effect on steering me in this direction. I was waffling on going vegetarian or vegan for YEARS because of so many conflicting thoughts and feelings on the matter. I have a huge capacity for self-sabotage, self-hatred and self-flagellation. In some ways, I felt like worrying about my diet would be tantamount to going from standing near, looking over the edge of my (mental health) breaking point to inching forward and teetering precariously at the brink. The thought of changing my diet in this way felt equal parts arrogant, stupid, selfish, not enough, dangerous, difficult, privileged, etc. All of my thoughts and feelings were a jumbled mess in my head, tied into a fraying knotted bow, with the idea of being just one person that couldn't possibly effect change in any meaningful way. I had that toxic mindset you sometimes admonish that goes like this: "millions of animals will suffer and die either way so what's the point of me risking whatever fleeting grasp on mental stability I might have to what? Stroke my ego for being 'better' person and not partaking in the carnage like the disgusting pathetic person I know I am?" Like I dunno... I had a lot of twisted up ideas of what vegans were like and what veganism was about. The sheer impossibility and magnitude of what I wanted vs what I as an individual could do was a lot to wrestle with. Adding onto it the whole whether or not I could do it without it putting me at risk of some eating disorder. (Apologies if this comes across weird. I don't mean it as a pejorative though I've never been diagnosed for an ED in the past. I just have a whole lot of fucked up mental illness and trauma bs tied to my body image and weight and have always used food to self-medicate. So I figured it wasn't a poor assumption to make that there might be a nonzero percent risk present if I were to try and take on such a radical dietary change.) I guess I'm saying a whole lot to just say that it was your reasoning that finally got all that in my head to settle down a bit. It was your willingness to forgive while encouraging (even just marginal) continuing improvement, that got me going. Not just because you said nice things but because you spoke with empathy AND backed it all up with facts and studies and carefully worded logical arguments. It seems so weird to me, that feeling that confidence that I could make a gradual change and still be doing something I could be proud of that could be effecting change beyond myself more than I originally thought; that I can just set the goal to do less harm rather than eliminating all harm in the world (that literal impossibility I was stuck on). When you gave me permission to let myself be an imperfect vegan or someone working up to being vegan someday, I was able to make the switch almost over night in my diet. I finished off my animal products and started eating plant based pretty soon after I started watching your channel. I know it's not typical but aside from a cheat food that took me almost a year to finally kick and a couple lapses/mistakes I went vegan pretty much overnight in early 2018. AND LET ME RE-EMPHASIZE THAT IT WAS THE LOGIC AND EMPATHY AND PERMISSIVE/FORGIVING VOICE THAT YOU GIVE THAT FINALLY MADE ME FLIP THAT SWITCH ALMOST AS SUDDENLY AS THESE PURITY VEGANS WISH THEY WERE GETTING PEOPLE TO DO WITH THEIR DOGMATIC NONSENSE. No one with an attitude like tofu goddess or many of your other usual detractors could EVER have gotten me there with their methods. Though I guess some (but not all) of it comes with the territory of being a fellow atheist - dogmatism sets off so many alarms bells for me - I need humanization and reason to come over. And I really think most people need that, regardless of beliefs. Sorry for the rambling essay, I just - you are doing good. Like immense good. I think you turn people TOWARDS veganism way more than these critics could ever even imagine you to be muddying the waters or turning people down the wrong path. This channel was CRUCIAL to me finally deciding to change my life so I live more in alignment with my values. For me, being vegan basically boils down to this: if I am horrified at the thought of hurting any animal myself, then I shouldn't be letting others do it for me just because I can't see it happening every day with my own eyes. If I really love them, I won't pay others to harm them on my behalf, if it can be helped. Of course there's still a ways to go, but you got me past the halfway point for the positive impact I can make and that's what matters to me. I honestly kind of feel protective of you because of it - like, you woke me up and you did it with reason and kindness! It's so upsetting to me that other people want to be rude, crude, and unnecessarily combative when you are primarily so kind, understanding, and helpful. Criticisms or corrections are one thing, but the blatant thoughtless vitriol from some of these people deeply disturbs and honestly kind of disgusts me...

I was just explaining my journey and feel like lots of people can relate to it but I still think that anyone with an "all or nothing" mentality is not going to get people to reduce harm. Food is NOT small part of everyone's life that's super easy to change. Everyone has a different cultural experience, different situations where access to food, resources time and money is concerned and coming after people that are doing what they can but aren't 100% vegan 100% of the time is clearly not convincing very many people and certainly didn't convince me - especially when people think about the larger system at play. It's becoming more popular for people to reduce their consumption of animals products and I don't think it's the "all or nothing" mentality that's doing that - it's the welcoming, accepting, mentality the make it a fun part of your week or diet to eliminate animal products, etc. The system as a whole does not stop torturing and slaughtering animals when a couple people eat no animal products. That overwhelming feeling that nothing you do, no matter how well intentioned, will never solve the real problem, makes changing such a huge and personal and social part of your life seem meaningless, but it's through realizing that we can make progress on a wider scale as a kind of social/politcal movement even with small dietary changes, that we can at least start bringing the demand down, start desaturating the market that changed my perspective. Like I thought before I changed my diet "I'm just one person, the meat industry is monstrous conglomerate spanning the whole globe. Me depriving myself isn't going to change that." And sure that's maybe a bit selfish, but whether I do the thing or not, in my mind at the time, doesn't change the real problems: That there's a very large, very powerful, very wealthy part of our society that everyone else hardly even questions that, in order to operate at all, must regularly cause extreme suffering. But as I see these different perspectives and the willingnesss of people to do things that some vegans and vegetarians would scoff at as merely performative half-measures. Like this thing of a bunch of people saying "ok, I can at least remove meat from my diet for one day a week" that probably has a much wider impact on the industry because it was such a popular thing to do a while back. Regardless of how we feel about it, the fact is that if we want real change, we're playing a numbers game. Even if they individually do less than a full vegan does, together they do more because more people are mobilizing, more people are acting together. Lots of people have been trying your position as their approach to get people to take collective action, but while it worked for some people the VAST majority of people just found it made them want nothing to do with any vegetarian or vegan ever. Some of that is their own bias and resistance to change, but some of it is also the political and strategic ineptitude of thinking that making other people feel like shit will make them want anything to do with whatever your selling.

Tbh I imagine someone milking almonds. But it's just so much simpler and feels more normal to call whatever plant milk, plant milk. (Almond milk, oat milk, soy milk...) Than whatever the store name is, "oat drink" or "soy drink". If it's used for the same purposes and is even fortified with the same nutrients, it should be considered in the milk category of foods.

i order subway a lot bc i’m disabled and usually when i’m in a bad pain flare i can’t rlly cook and can’t keep down most food, but a subway sandwich is usually okay. i like mayo on my sandwich. it’s really difficult to spread vegan mayo on an already made sandwich. plus it means extra steps that i can’t always accomplish- 1) stopping in the kitchen, more time standing/walking 2) opening the fridge, in flares this usually puts my wrist and hand out 3) unwrapping the sandwich + unscrewing the jar + spreading the mayo, fine motor control i likely don’t have, 4) re assembling the sandwich/ rewrapping, more fine motor control, 5) cleaning the knife, opening the dishwasher, bending down to put the knife in, doing all of this while i can barely stand and probably barely was able to get to my car and back. so one day i said Fuck it! and i just started getting a small amount of regular light mayonnaise when i can’t do all that work. bc i need the stupid sandwich to taste exactly the same so i don’t get nauseous. it’s not vegan but like who cares!!! i have real problems !!! same with sometimes eating egg. sometimes i’m bedridden and accidentally forget to eat for two days and need fast protein i can eat easily. i can’t eat beans easily. so i make eggs, because i’m poor and it’s easy. when i’m doing well physically i’m a perfect ~giant green smoothie~ ~endless meal prep~ vegan, but sometimes that’s just not possible. it’s not perfect veganism, but sometimes my health is more important than a label love this vid ! as i do all of urs

Gojiman's gut testing focus gives me the impression of naturopathic doctors, chiropractic doctors, and alternative health practicioners. They tend to use excessive tests & supplements to milk money out of people. Is Gojiman just a "nutritionist" with an online certificate? Is he actually enrolled in Chiropractic school, but trying to give off the impression he's enrolled in an actual university, getting a masters degree in dietetics?

Boycotting is a tricky form of activism, especially as it's often paired with very vocal discontent online and is too short-lived to make a difference. It's often shown to have the opposite effect when it's towards a specific brand or company. People getting very angry in association with a company name can be a very cheap form of marketing for a company. If the internet meat-heads learned that vegans for whatever reason despise Taco Bell now, guess which chain would see a drastic rise in sales for a period of time? Lol. I personally believe it to be more effective when it's directed at an entire industry, but also leaving the door open for the same manufacturers to just produce things you would be willing to buy. Also you'd probably have to live somewhere in hollywood and have a big food budget to just boycott any manufacturer, store or chain that has animal products. People that want to believe the world is black and white will have a hard time navigating through reality, since it's mostly in the grey.

So the discussion on vegan identity and cognitive dissonance (CD henceforth) was very interesting and I personally related to it. I was fully vegan (minus mistakes I guess) for like 2.5 years and then decided to stop because I thought it would improve my mental health. At first I was numb, ordering whatever and eating whatever, but when I got out of that and my life overall got better, the CD really started kicking in, because I couldn't justify to myself that eating animals was ok, I just had to admit it was convenient and tastier, and that admission ate at me until I decided for my 2019 new year's resolution to go vegetarian, and a few days before 2020 to just bite the bullet and go vegan. I've made mistakes, I've given myself allowances that swiftly brought on some CD (I'm talking allowing beeswax twice and misordering cheese once and eating it, nothing too major) and that discomfort has and continues to really pointed me in the right direction after 2 years of being numb. When I wasn't vegan I used to say that I was ethically aligned with veganism and that distance between my values and my actions took it's time to close up but it sure did. I guess what I'm trying to say is that since the first time I went vegan that identity remained despite my actions, and that identity (which only changed in name to "ethically aligned with veganism") is what brought my actions back into alignment with my values

Diabetics eventually learn that Fat is your friend, and Carbs are not. It all becomes triglycerides, and if you end up with more glucose than you burn, your body will convert it to be absorbed as fat. Appetite will harm you as much as your calorie counts, and a good balance of fats and carbs will suppress your appetite longer than the same number of calories in just carbs. This allows you to eat fewer calories per hour, despite eating a potentially higher calorie food. What proportion you need is not predictable by anyone, especially 20 somethings from middle class families who barely know the word scarcity. Calories are key, and finding the right proportion of carbs/fat/protein is a process each person must make for themselves. None of them are bad, none of them are good. And it is worth remembering we have names for the diseases that occur when you try to eliminate one of these "macro nutrients" from your diet. Good morning, Good day and Good night!

I'm fully in line with Tofu Goddess here. You can encourage others to reduce their animal consumption, etc. But "veganism" is not a diet, it's a philosophy based on animal rights, so when someone who has definitely adapted to being vegan then chooses to buy a candy bar or buy something that has animal ingredients on it, then they are not vegan. I'm sorry but this is an all or nothing, at least for the animals. Gavin Hillick - Not in the Randian sense. She’s an objectivist wrt the ontology of moral values. She thinks moral values exist objectively. But it’s totally unclear what she means by that.

You are one of the rare vegan channels I continue watching, because your head is in the right place. I was vegetarian as a teenager, but it was difficult to sustain living in a small town with a culture that is massively based on meat, so I had to give it up after a few years. When I moved to a big city by myself I slowly went pescatarian, vegetarian and eventually vegan. Because I had problems with my skin I eventually got my diet obsessively clean - no fat at all (

It really seems like you do your best to honestly represent the literature of nutrition (which, as a scientist in another field, seems muddled as hell so props to you for that). I have started vegetarianism since watching your videos (2 weeks now, so early days, but I’m really trying). the hang up for me has always been confusion/doubt about health benefits associated and honestly annoyance with the pseudo-scientific voices in veganism. Your videos helped me focus on moral reasons which I think had always underlied my interest. Just vegetarian for now, but still credit these videos quite a bit. Thank you!

As someone who hates the sound of chewing, the video of 'those annoying vegans' was agonising! Anyway, I really like this new format:)

This is like a dream, I always wanted to see you drag Tofu Goddess, Those Annoying Vegans or Vegan Footsoldier but never thought I'd see the day since they're so irrelevant. And for all three to be in one video too- best gift ever.

Please, more videos like this. Also, your rant on Shape of Water was fucking hilarious. I'm a film buff, and I don't disagree lolol (also The Lighthouse was fucking amazing and probably the best film of 2019)

I'm not vegan but I really appreciate your videos and have encouraged me to reduce my animal product consumption by A LOT. It has even helped me figure out how to approach my huge meat eater boyfriend in a way that has encouraged him to reduce his as well. Starting almost a year I started looking into environmental issues and checking out vegan channels out of curiosity. My bf was initially very skeptical of it all (has had bad experiences with extremists that turned him off to it all and pushed him in the opposite direction), but keeping documentaries on in the background and not talking in an extremist way has brought him around to being open to meatless and dairy-free options. He has since encouraged and helped me find dairy-free options in almost everything. Last might we even had our first vegan meal without labeling it so and he really enjoyed it and said he would want to try more options. Approaching it as an environmental issue and as exploring curiosity in meatless and dairy-free options rather than an extreme stance has really opened both of us up to these options. I dont think we will ever be a vegan household but we have definitely reduced our consumption a lot.

I was fully vegan for almost a year & I struggled a lot with it. Eating out was so difficult. I went out to a breakfast restaurant once and ordered a burrito with no meat or cheese. The first try they accidentally put chicken in it. I sent it back because A) I was vegan and B) eating meat gives me terrible diarrhea (I had been vegetarian for 2 years prior to going vegan and still am vegetarian). The second try it had no meat, but did have cheese. At this point, I felt bad sending it back! That would be 2 completely wasted meals. So I ate it, even though I was vegan. I’m still 99% vegan now, but because of the intensity of judgement that I’d get for doing things (like eating the improperly made food served to me at restaurants to avoid excessive food waste) that were not 100% ‘vegan’ I abandoned the label entirely.

This is random, but I was recently witness to a heated Facebook debate between a vegan and a non-vegan about abortion of all things. The premise of the debate essentially, if vegans have a problem with taking the lives of animals, shouldn’t they be pro-life? As you can imagine,

I think Its SO important that vegans are advocating for a 'slow' approach, for meat eaters entering veganism. I have disordered eating - so, i struggle with getting enough food down and have a mighty hard time going about my day whenever i shed a kilo or two. Cutting out a large part of my diet seems counterintuitive and dangerous to me and my doctor, despite the fact that ive for a long time been open to veganism. I also love sushi. Your 'go vegan except for x' approach is really helpful not only to a person who didnt happen to have some disordered eating or a crazy sensitive stomach (bleeding stomach wounds when i was 12, dont even know how i did it!) and just as a person who loves sushi and would have a hard time giving it up.... but ESPECIALLY for those of us who need to have a talk with our doctor about any kind of 'restrictive' diet, where its not just our choice to go vegan. If it was up to me id go vegan except for sushi and be grand. I have to start even smaller than that and just do my best from there. You can feel ridicolous doing that, but its nice to know someone out there's got you.
