I strongly dislike these “make it yourself!” beginner vegan tips. Yes it appeals to some people to go all natural and prep everything in their kitchen but it’s not realistic or sustainable to make everything from scratch, like readily available non dairy milks, peanut butter, etc. You’d have to look pretty hard in my house to spot that we’re vegan because we buy normal, non organic, available-at-every-grocery-store-ever ingredients because we only have access to 1 grocery store and we’re poor lol. Most people who come to my house say they find this way of living much more doable than what their “usual” idea of vegans are.

Totally agree! I'm a working college student so I can't afford organic and don't have time to make things like homemade milk, I don't even have time to press or marinate my tofu or not rely on premade frozen stuff sometimes lol, I know most vegans are similar, it seems rare to have all the time for that! Especially parents, can't imagine!
@christina74544 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the equipment that you need to make nutbutters and cheeses etc yourself. I only have a 30€ blender that doesn't even get fruits and veggies completely smooth (reason I never drink smoothies). I also don't have an Insta pot or pressure cooker 🤷♀️

We all have different lives and different personal experiences. If someone asked me to do a video on what I have in my house, what I eat and offered me money to do so I would lol. This girl is just showing what she eats. I think if people think we need a better representation of vegan youtubers (which I personally think there is tons of variety already but always room for more!!) you could start your own KZbin channel.
@samanthab66424 жыл бұрын
It is also realistic for me to make everything from scratch even if I do not always do it. I do not always and this girl may not always make her food from scratch either but I love cooking and have the time to cook. It’s minor but can we also talk about how processing sugar with bone char is an North American issue? I understand that you are only used to what is around you, but especially videos online, they reach a global audience but country-specific information is being passed as universal. The pantry video made it sound like all sugar everywhere is not vegan unless you buy organic, but in Europe the sugar packaging either has a clear marking v for vegan which is most sugars to begin with or it doesn’t, you do not have to go to a specialty organic store or even buy the double the price organic option at the regular supermarket. Tell people to check the packaging and do research instead of “just buy organic because it’s always better”.
@marckealhofer17694 жыл бұрын
In the US, some manufacturers are no longer using bone char or only using it at some of their factories. It can be very difficult to find whether the big brand sugar at the supermarket is actually vegan or not in the US, but a surprising amount of it IS actually vegan. Even the Domino sugar at my local grocery store is technically vegan, as the particular factory that supplies my area doesn’t use bone char.
@scarlet80784 жыл бұрын
It's not a problem in the US either. You can very clearly see if the sugar is vegan or not. Like the other commenter said, even the major sugar brand (Domino) is vegan. I go to Whole Foods & I can't even find a sugar that's not marked if it's vegan. Maybe there are some black market places where very cheap sugar is sold unmarked but I find it hard to believe that many vegans are shopping that way
@marckealhofer17694 жыл бұрын
Scarlet I think it can be a problem in the US still. The cheap big brand white sugar at my local grocery store are never labeled, and I’m not going to be shopping at Whole Foods on my budget. I only know that the Domino sugar in my area is vegan because they are responsive when you contact them to ask. It’s not on the container or on their website. Domino does has west coast plants that are NOT vegan, and the sugar is packaged in the exact same containers. You have to check the lot number to determine that it’s coming from a factory that doesn’t use bone char.
@yaash41234 жыл бұрын

regarding cooking beans: I'll usually cook a few massive pots of beans, and freeze them in portions. I occasionally need to suppliment with canned beans, but that way I mostly have beans ready whenever i need them. I think part of the problem with canned beans isn't the cans themself, but with the amount of non-beaniness in a can of beans. A 400g can of beans is usually between 200-250g cooked beans and 150-200g of water/salt/additives/can. In addition, dried beans take up a lot of water during cooking, so, assuming they double in weight (usually at least, or more), a can of beans is somewhere between 1/3-1/4 beans. A 2kg package of dried beans is packaged in plastic, yes, but is essentially equivalent to 20 cans of beans in beans. It's also 1/4 the amount of weight to transport, and can be packed somewhat more densely than cans, which is something i try to take into consideration when it comes to the environmental impact of my food. Transport's a bigger deal for me though because I live really far north, so almost everything has to travel pretty far to get here.

Tip from a brazilian: Idk about the smell part. But cooking beans doesn't take 3 hours. Just use a pressure cooker. It takes like 40 minutes to cook them then (talking abt standard white or black beans here). And that's without soaking. Soaked beans take even less time. Plus as long as you don't flavour them yet, you can make a big batch and just freeze parts of it for later use and they won't go bad.This way you can save time and also flavour them differently each time. So if you can bear with the smell maybe this would help, if not for yourself maybe it'll make it easier for your partner and children? Idk, just a tip. Besides! Canned beans taste fucking gross...

In terms of cravings, sometimes it’s best to put the chips in a bowl and the bag away so you don’t eat it all. But there’s also nothing wrong with eating or enjoying eating either. Just avoid disordered eating behaviors (binging and restricting frequently are disorders behaviors) and you’ll be fine.

I lost weight, but that's bc I started in 2011 when vegan products weren't as accessible. Back then, I had to make my own burgers, "fysh", "chikn", "neatballs", cheeze, desserts, etc. from scratch. Now that vegan foods are popular, I just buy all this stuff and since I'm already at the store, I buy pasta & chips too 😣 I gained back the 30 lbs slowly within 5 yrs. This year I got back in the kitchen and started cooking like I used to. I'm currently 20 lbs down!
@samanthab66424 жыл бұрын
You can try buying them less. My partner cannot just have a few chips or chocolate here and there so we just buy it less or I hide it lol There is nothing wrong with doing this when one has an issue with practicing restraint in this way. With time when you get results with your exercise and diet that may be enough motivation to practice restraint

If you do, try to make it the day before, cover it and put it in the fridge overnight (or a couple of hours). It tastes the best when its nice and cold and the flavors ans textures have settled. i would say my main issues with videos like those is that they do not talk about the financial COSTS of specialty vegan items like vegan cheeses, vegan mock meats, other nut butters besides PB, tapioca starch, black salt, etc. Those are all EXPENSIVE items. I myself as a 4 year vegan (11 year vegetarian before that) do not buy vegan specialty items like mock meats or cheeses all that often because they are SO DARN EXPENSIVE. I'm a college graduate not working in my field, I'm not a salary worker yet. I cannot afford to buy foods like that.
@annakozdon53084 жыл бұрын
Lol, I can't. I like your videos but you criticize SO MUCH STUFF for no reason. I like home made oat milk, I add a bit of salt and dates to it- it's quick and cheap and tastes nice too. You don't need to drink it straight, you can use it for many things. Who drinks milk straight from the glass anyway? And cooking beans doesn't take THAT much time if you're at least decent at planning. Just soak it over night, cook while you do something else, pop into freezer anad you'll be good for a while. I do it because it is cheaper and I don't have to carry all the extra weight in cans home after shopping (no car). For me this is actually a lazy option. Sometimes you're like such an alien when it comes to food lol. There are plenty of people who like unprocessed flavours, my partner love eating chickpeas plain, not even salt added. And the quantity of food? I can easily have a whole head of broccoli during the day, it is not such a crazy amount (especially in cream soup?).
