Fun fact, they originally tried to make Shift an entire sub-series, right up until the moment EA betrayed Slightly Mad. The lead dev then secretly created a shell company to hold the rights to Shift's important assets in so that EA couldn't pillage them upon trying to shutter SM and they made a daring escape. The only developer to successfully break free of EA. (For a while anyway)

I don't know how you make cars feel like they understeer and oversteer at the same time, but my gripes with the handling aside, I think NFS Shift is underrated. I just love the immersion and sense off speed in this game. And the events and how the cars handle feels different from one another (if kinda sucky)

The tyre model is either undercooked or bad by design. Cars slip nearly to the point of sliding, even FWD under "regular" cornering. You can clearly observe that from third person cams. That being said, another game that's a match for that sense of speed, if not more, is Descenders...

Honestly this is why I’m so fricken hesitant to play NFS Shift 1 and 2, they have a terrible handling model, and that to me is the most important thing in a racing game, with car sound design being second. Gimme a good immersive environment all you want, but have a shitty handling model and you’re not getting me to play.

Driving the Pagani Zonda R in this game is probably the most batshit insane portrayal of any driving experience in any game. Not only do you have insane physics & all but in a car that is loud as hell as well

Shift 1 was a unique experience with the still immersive cockpit view and the improved one in the sequel. Shift 1 was as good back then and now with it's car selection and event variety in 2009. A lot of people say the handing is bad or wonky is wrong it's easy just to get in and drive and is really forgiving than it's sequel since it expects some to play like burnout. I would put shift as underrated since it's overlook by prostreet and is the "gt/forza clone" of the series which isn't fair to call it that. I think a shift 3 is deserved for SMS.

I was playing it with the low steering assist because it's just felt more free to control the car (since high steering assist just handles like 50% of your cars) and still able to keep in the racing line. I'm also turned off the traction control because 1 thing I notice is that the launch is much better without TC. For drift handling I gotta say the way to stop drift is kinda weird, like I had to slow down quite a bit or my cars is just stuck at those drift angle or just going to much to start another drift to the opposite way (if you turning to another direction instead), but still better than Shift 2 one. And I'm not quite suprise if it expect to play like burnout, considering that the game still awards you for playing dirty

Both games had a very weird handling, they "drifted without loosing grip" it was really really weird, you were taking corners right but drifting? without spinning and loosing speed. Idk how to explain it was weird af , but thats how I felt it.

Nah Prostreet had revolutionary graphics and damage for Need For Speed at the time. We went from the grainy, dark, damp world of Carbon and into the clear light of Prostreet. Almost everything about Protreet was revolutionary honestly. They expanded the tuning from Underground 2, added a vinyl and decal creator/editor with 20 overlays(huge deal at the time for online racing games), brought wheelie competitions to racing games(also had not been done), The last NFS game to have autosculpt(that I know of), the realistic damage model and hitboxes were excellent(also the biggest downfall causing the "slim" car selection). Prostreet did so many more things right than wrong. And graphics were at the top of the list of things that went right with Prostreet.

This has the ideal camera movements on a racing game. It's simple enough to convey jumps, collisions, acceleration, high speed, and etc. with one basic solution, by reading the gforce and suspension. And it feels really good. The drift on shift 1 was unplayable with input lag, but on shift 2 it's manageable and satisfying.

It's clearly underrated though the handling model is rather flawed due to the input lag (only a steering wheel or a controller can mitigate the issue) just like ProStreet.

I used a Logitech Formula Force EX steering wheel and worked just fine for both games without the worry of input lag unlike playing with a keyboard.

I might be in minority, but I absolutely love this game, especially since I played it on steering wheel, with no assists whatsoever. Even drift events are very enjoyable and great fun for me, although Kuru seems to hate them immensly :) Only things that bugged me, were what Kuru mentioned @10:30, the fact that your car gets under the opponents cars when you hit them, that's so dumb. Other thing, was what I called "magnetic barriers" - once you hit one of those, you have quite a problem getting back on track, just like it was pulling you towards it. Apart from that, I had an absolutely great experience playing this game. And the engine roars are fantastic, the way the engines scream, make cars really sound like a proper racing machines, not some toys

I loved this game too! Played the crap out of it and absolutely maxed out the E92 M3 (731hp, 0-60 in 1.9) without changing the gear ratios so I’ll be constantly redlining in 6th gear

Shift and really any slightly mad studios game feels like someone made a sim handling model but has never driven a car. Or better yet, someone making a realistic driving model but only basing it on making cars harder to drive= more realistic.

The racing game that i played the most on the 360, even more then FM 3 and 4, the immersion, the customization in this game is so perfect, i know that it aint a simulator, but i really play like one, the only thing that i dislike about this game is how the car seens to oversteer in 3° person, so i always play in the cockpit or the helmet camera

When i first got this game i didn't realize you could scroll don't and quit the events from the pause menu. Because the orange arrow at the bottom of the first screen looks more like a line. So i would just keep retrying events until i won or just ejected the disk and put it back in to get back to main menu.

The sense of speed im this game was amazing. The cockpit view is the absolute best and most immersive of any racing game, still unmatched. When a car had some serious pulling power, you could almost feel it irl. I always raced 1st person view becuase the outside view is mediocre. But man did I get thrilled when I was in the cockpit of a zonda R in this game. No game has made me feel like that in cockpit view, ever. And the carsounds are great too

Playing Shift and using an exterior camera is throwing away the game's best feature, which is the cockpit cam. For experience, Shift games have yet to be beaten (Driveclub would be the closest best thing).

I liked Shift and Shift 2 way more than Pro Street... Mainly because when Pro Street got released, I bought the game expecting some professional street racing scene and I got circuit racing instead which made me super mad because I wanted to race them streets like in Most Wanted, not circuit racing... So I sold it to a friend... And when Shift got released I did expected circuit racing, didnt buy it at the time but later on and I liked it very much... I didnt like NFS Most wanted 2015 cuz of the car collecting stuff... and then I just played NFS a bit trough up till NFS Heat which got me hooked on the ability to get one car and race it till the end and never swap it... That was legit the best feature in a game that I have seen... Building an attachment with your car is a key in my opinion and swaping cars cuz you need something better and ending up with some super cars was never my style...

I think Real Racing 2 and 3 is somewhat a successor to Shift series even though both games were made by different developers for different platforms. Both games share similar racing event styles, in name atleast (Endurance for example), both have damage and interiors, both have exact same transmission whine and some menu sounds and both have similar cars. The physics is simpler in RR3 though (not much body roll) and as such the Ai is less crazy.

I just hate how bouncy the cars are and the ai, they are all over the place even occasionally straight up not braking and smashing the barriers. And the livery editor, even carbon is way superior Other than that I think the game is pretty solid

I had honestly no problem with the handling. I 100% the game during my spring break as a teen. And unlike Pro Street, the muscle cars were easier to handle. Btw i notice someone in the chat that you should just skip the drift stages. I disagree, the drifting felt really satisfied once you get used to it.
