Understand Jewish holidays, Israeli politics, Jewish diasporic communities, and more. Learn about Judaism in pop culture, debunking myths about Jews, and explore obscure Israeli landmarks. We’re asking questions as basic as “What is the Talmud?”, and as obscure as “How did hip-hop boost Kosher wine sales?”, and everything in between.
About Unpacked: We provide nuanced insights by unpacking all things Jewish. People are complex and complicated - yet we’re constantly being pushed to oversimplify our world. At Unpacked we know that being complex makes us more interesting. Because of this, we break the world down with nuance and insight to drive your curiosity and challenge your thinking.

The leaderships of the Palestinians in Gaza and Judea/Samaria do not serve the interests of the people they purport to represent. Instead, they take instructions from their paymasters in Iran, Syria, Qatar and elsewhere in the Islamic world that have their own agendas with no true concern for the Palestinians. Normalisation of relations between Israel and UAE, Bahrain and, hopefully, Saudi Arabia will put pressure on the Palestinians to depose their current leaders as funding from those countries is either severed or more tightly controlled. But Iran and other regional powers will continue to fund the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, so good relations with Saudi Arabia, while a step in the right direction, will not in itself improve the lives of the Palestinians. If the Palestinians want to improve their lives, they must throw off - or if necessary overthrow - their venal leaders and replace them with ones who will normalise relations with Israel. Once that happens, there will be peace and prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians.

I'm very thankful that my mom introduced me to Israel beyond the propaganda we heard in Syria. Born in Damascus and I absolutely recognise Israel and I reject the fact that Syria doesn't recognise Israel. I have tried to challenge this topic ever since my teen years and I will always do, I no longer lived in Syria then. Unfortunately, the gov, Iran and Hezbollah brought bloody wars and drugs, the country became anti-semitic and disgusting. I really hope things change 🙏 Israel brings hope for the middle east. Israel belongs to the middle east.

What is your view on the immigration to the Palestinian region which led to the establishment of Israel via violence and nakba? Don’t you see that as immoral and wrong? Imagine living in your country with 90% of the people being your people and then over the years foreigner from all over the world come together in YOUR country, as soon as they are significant in size they fight you, throw you out of your house, demolish it - so you never come back. Not you nor your family or neighbor. Jewish population was ~10% in Palestine in the 1920s, now it’s 70%. By that logic Turkish immigrants in Germany have the right to form their own country inside Germany as well, or Romanian immigrants take a part of Spain, or Algerian Immigrants in France take part of France.

Baruch HaShem for the State of Israel and the Israeli people. As an Iranian-American and a Christian, I pray that my people will be free soon, and when they are, when we’ve liberated Iran from that fascist terrorist Islamist genocidal regime: our countries can once again rebuild the strong relationship and ancient, Biblical connection that our *peoples* never lost. Improved economic conditions is something that is highly important to Palestinians and we should do what we can to improve them, and I do agree the Abraham Accords do achieve that. BUT that alone will not bring a longterm solution to the conflict. Before we do things like invest in economic cooperation and increased cultural exchange we need to agree and make it clear what our end goal is as Israelis and what we can realistically offer Palestinians in the event stability is improved and NOT leave it ambiguous. We are not doing that because it’s clear very clear that any people at the end of day want rights to equal representation if not national sovereignty. Which means minimally equal voting rights in Israel (like the Arab Israelis have) or a 2-state solution, which we know is longer realistic. I am not advocating that we offer either of these options today and agree that is not currently feasible, the kind of normalization you mentioned in the video should come first - but to emit mentioning the fact that it will come down to the two outcomes listed above is just silly. Also, assuming the plan of economic growth will create normalization, that will create more education and economic stability- which will only increase general advocacy for true civil rights and not just quality of life.

My favourite part about Arab countries refusing to acknowledge Israel as a state is the fact that they've already named said country by name. If they truly did not want to recognise Israel, they wouldn't name it. More likely, they would be like, "Israel, who?" SMH. They just shot themselves in the foot.

It’s anti Jew. The term anti semitism was coined in the 1800s, in Germany, because after the enlightenment hating due to religion was out of fashion. But race was seen as a “scientific” classification. It appealed to enlightenment sensibilities. There are many semites that are not Jewish, and anti semitism was never meant to apply to them. It exclusively applies to Jews. So the correct term is anti Jew.

Those Israelis volunteer to give up those homes etc. Do this throughout Israel. Everyone must agree to peace though. How to ensure it? In fact all the Abrham accords was other arab countries promised normalization for other concessions. Syria if Israel gives up the Golan which they can't do. So I have to strongly disgree and I don't think this alliance is on stable footing. I would rather a cold peace (as the case with Egypt) then a country pretending to be Israel's friend and I don't trust the UAE or any of the others in this deal that it is simply populists joining forces but Netanyahu won't be around forever and it has nothing to do with having any real respect for Israel and Jews having a homeland at all. Golda Meir had her socialist block in Africa which had good intentions but it didn't last. Not sure this will be any different with the populist block.

3:42 how does one claim to not recognize a specific thing without recognizing it? i mean, using a proper noun recognizes what the proper noun refers to. i know it's semantics, but the whole hate thing is just stupid. something like 1/3 of the entire world's jewish population once coexisted with muslims in the muslim-controlled iberian peninsula (now spain and portugal). in the mean time, between crusades and other events, everybody has raped pillaged and plundered the other two. not one of us is any better than the other. and i dare say not one of us has a 100% accurate version of eschatology or the Deity we all worship (let's face it we worship different ideas of the same Deity). i know it's not easy to forget the past for the sake of the future, but maybe we're finally headed in the right direction. all that said, beware of alliances (normalized friendliness and lock-step alliances are two different things). ideologies change. friends can disagree and remain friends. but when allies disagree they find themselves unable to support each other without compromising principles. alliances usually end with one or more parties feeling betrayed, and everyone returns to fighting.

Might seem an odd question but are the Irish one of the lost tribes, namely tribe of Dan? Lot of articles online claim they are, they get this from an ancient people in Irish annals called the tuatha de Danann (tribe of Dan) recorded in Leabhor Gabala Ereann and the history of Ireland by Thomas Moore also records the tuatha de Danann. Irish DNA originated in the Levant also.

𝗜𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵? Peace between Israel and any other nation depends on the Jewish people being at peace with each other. In the past, Israeli Jews were once united in times of war. Today, even war fails to unite us. There is no need for us to fight anyone. We will finish ourselves off with our own hands. Until we understand that everything depends on uniting above our divisions and discovering a common love, we will have no peace and calm with our neighbors. How does it work? It works because we are a special nation that was established not on biological ties, but on achieving the idea of “love your friend as yourself,” and it is that example of unity that will let us function as a healthy organ in the world. If we achieve such love for each other, then Palestinians will have no drive to fight us, and in general, the hatred against us will subside. If we wish to be at peace with Palestinians and the entire world, we first need to be at peace with each other.

Their refusal to accept Yeshua as the Messiah only prolong the suffering, trials and tribulations we "ALL" incur throughout this wicked world. I'm a believer in Yehsua as well and I have both jewish and christian members in my family. I know what this pain is. You need to give this up, especially right now. it's insensitive and super hurtful for them. They are united right now exactly BECAUSE of their jewish faith. Telling them to give that up, would break them. and it is so hurtful insult. If you want to witness then simply SHOW the love of Christ in your actions. THEN they will see that here is a christian who is respectful, compassionate, kind, - so that's what christians are like!! that's what they should experience, something to be attracted by, not someone who is Lording it over them and being arrogant. especially since you haven't convinced them of yeshua. without this, there is no conviction. There is no convincing of Yeshua, without showing the LOVE and kindness and compassion and sacrifice of Christ. Right now, Jews around the world hear some Christians saying they deserved it - that's what the world says, that's what Arabs and muslims say, and can you imagine if that happened to your family and someone says you deserve it? Because of how you worship G-d? Dont call them stubborn right now. Read Romans 11, and 1 Corinthians 9 and Genesis 12:3. Remember that God never changes and is the same yesterday today and tomorrow so his Genesis words are forever. God will bless those who bless Israel. Jews are the apple of his eye. And we are only grafted in by His grace goodness and mercy, and Jews are His first born child. We are adopted. Being Jealous or haughty or arrogant has no place - as Romans 11 warns us that He will CUT US OFF faster and easier because we were grafted in as a wild vine. and He can and will bring the Jews and restore them to Him, better and easier than he adopted us. They are natural. And there's nothing to be jealous of, we must not be insecure. The Jews being chosen hasn't been a walk in the park as you can see. Believe me, they would trade you places in a heartbeat so you would be the one to suffer the trauma of their family being tortured, raped, burned alive, beheaded. I think that being a gentile is a protection right now. to be a jew is to be hunted and persecuted. Theirs is a terrible burden. Don't make it their fault. or you are like the world telling them they deserve it. Please, don't hurt them this way. I beg you as my Christian sibling. If you want to hurt someone, hurt me, hurt us Christians who should emulate our Lord Jesus who sacrificed himself for his people. You will not hurt the Jews. you may hurt me.
