Unpacking the 20th Party Congress

This year, over 2,000 Chinese Communist Party delegates from around China will convene for its 20th Party Congress, a twice a decade top leadership meeting. Xi Jinping is set to assume an unprecedented third term and there will likely be key personnel shifts below Xi. Beijing could also unveil major policy changes or redirection. What are the key takeaways from this year’s 20th Party Congress? How will this impact U.S.-China relations?
To unpack the significance of the 20th Party Congress, please join the CSIS China Power Project, Freeman Chair in China Studies, and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics on Tuesday, October 25 from 8:30 am to 10:00 am ET for a discussion on the key takeaways and implications of the Party Congress. The discussion will feature experts Dr. David Finkelstein, vice president of the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA) and director of CNA’s China & Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Division, Ms. Lucy Hornby, visiting scholar at Harvard Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and former deputy bureau chief in Beijing at Financial Times, and Mr. Daniel Rosen, founding partner at Rhodium Group and senior associate (non-resident) with the Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at CSIS. The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Jude Blanchette, Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS, Dr. Scott Kennedy, senior adviser and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at CSIS, and Dr. Bonny Lin, senior fellow for Asian security and director of the China Power Project at CSIS.
