Very beautifully spoken. I do believe that suffering is part of the experience of being human. And when you awaken from the slumber of numbing your feelings with alcohol, you can experience both joy and sorrow from a deeper place inside you. In the words of Kahlil Gibran, in his wonderful book, The Prophet, " The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain." Thank you Kevin for a lovely message from your heart.

Trauma, tragedy and heartache and illness…it’s life. We all carry heavy things but don’t give up life for alcohol. Don’t give into 1 thing and give up everything else.

I wish I could leave a sophisticated comment at this point. But I'm so overwhelmed by your today's thoughts that everything I have to say is - I love who you are. I love your upright person and the perspectives you're giving. Consider yourself as a positive role model.😊

Wonderful video. I have a good friend who's wife died in childbirth. Hes had an incredible experience raising his son alone. I'm sure hes had regrets and challenges but he is so very proud of and amazed by his son. It's incredible to witness as a friend. His son is now home from deployment as a medic in the military and is soon to be a flight trauma nurse and rigger for helicopter rescue. All the bad and all the good manifesting and fading away constantly in our lives. Without that we would be emotionless shells.

Thanks Jenny. It's a blessing and a curse to raise a child on your own. I wish his mom could have seen how strong he has grown. I hope she can in some way. She was always very proud of him.

It's the trauma that always had me going back to alcohol for relief. Just a desperate need to run from pain. Really hoping this time I can deal with the horrible feelings that surface and keep sober for good. Life is so much better without alcohol.

Absolutely. I have had the blessing of dealing with 'traumatic' events when a drinker and not... I don't need to tell you which way is less damaging.

I think my Dad taught my younger, alcoholic sister that, no matter what, “Don’t go/act crazy”. Well, my Mom and I went pretty crazy, but came out “redeemed” in the end because of it. We cried, scoured and faced the dark in order to find what was true and authentic. In the end, we weren’t addicted or unhappy. We were interesting and compassionate towards others and ourselves. We’d made it through as transformed champions. So, the uncomfortable and difficult road less traveled gave us peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment that we would never have found if we just lived our lives trying to fit in and look “normal”.

It's hard to live sometimes. I would rather live through the trauma of the loss than to never have lived through the happiness of my years with my wife and what she still brings to me, even though she passed over almost 20 years ago. A loss like this take some things from you but it also gives so much as well.

At the end of my journey, I see the tragedy! The vicious cycle of living in a precarious society - we buy into take this and feel good, the doctor give us pills and that’s gotta be okay, right. In my AA experience the focus was on our shortcomings, a label, I’m an alcoholic instead of why am I doing this thing under the guise of reward/relief and making things worse? Yes, we did it to ourselves but society encourages and almost demands it to be part of the it group. Anyway; here I am saying “it’s never too late to be a better person all around.” Any improvement for myself personally, even for one day, is good for humanity. We do affect each other. Thanks Kevin, I’m getting educated at last and you’re making a difference! ❤😊

Frankl said that meaning can be found in the most devastating of situations and the most hellish of places - even in the face of atrocity. “The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.”
