I know this is a touchy topic among quilt makers - how could you dare to quilt an edge to edge or all-over design over top of applique?
Well.....there's a story. Top up your favorite beverage, and have a listen.
It's so important to consider the options...know your why...know the results that fit the quilt maker's style and budget and life circumstances...and all these things weigh in on the decision between edge to edge quilting (same design over the entire quilt), and custom quilting(area-specific and usually more fussy).
My client Barb has a heart-warming story - you won't want to miss it - and now she has a finished quilt!

I agree with you, slowing down does help in a few different instances! The edge to edge feather that you do , accented the quilt beautifully! So glad that Barbara now has a quilt to gift to her dear friends. And, I wish to extend my very best to Barb… Thank you for helping her and sharing her story with us 🤩👏🏻👏🏻🌻💝

We are the boss of our own quilt. We all need that on a sign in our studios. The feathers look beautiful on this quilt! I think the wave and flow of it is perfect with the curving vine of the border appliqué.

Thanks for the affirmation! I fully agree… each quilt has its own story and reasons…and finished is always better than perfect (or even custom)❤️

Many years ago, Bonnie Hunter featured an antique applique quilt on her blog that had a grid quilted across the entire quilt. Her comment was, the old quilts where the applique was "quilted down" were the ones that lasted the best. I love the look you achieved on this quilt!

I had never heard about it being longer lasting to stitch over applique, but that kind of makes sense, Just one more reason....

Wonderful story and how you worked together to decide on the all over design. It works so well. You have to look really hard to see the stitching on the applique - it's all fantastic. The recipient will be delighted! As for the quilt police, I long ago decided that I didn't care. I chose a backing for my daughter's quilt - she chose the original fabrics and one design she said were little alien spaceships (they weren't, but she was young at the time) - I finally used it all when she was in her 20s! The fabric I chose was batik and it looked like alien hands waving, so I used it and to bind it. Quilt police told me the backing didn't go well and they would have chosen something different. But they weren't my daughter and she was thrilled and laughed at the "hands". Another thing was I quilted it to death and it was so stiff - with so much use, she and her husband use it for watching tv or just dozing on the sofas, it is now as soft and cuddly. Your leafy background looks like the feathers and so colourful - brilliant. Thank you.

I love it! I must say I was a bit horrified with the idea of edge to edge over appliqué. But you have absolutely done a fantastic job! The final results showcase the appliqué; goals accomplished! I’m a convert 🤗.

I think it depends on the quilt. My mom used to do the most beautiful needle turn applique, and the amount of work she put into a quilt almost demanded custom quilting. However, when she would make a fusible applique quilt, an edge to edge design was actually the better option, as it ensured everything was a little more secure with the extra stitching. I got the privilege of doing a lot of her long arm work, so price was never a concern, as it was always a labor of love. I think this quilt is beautiful, and I'm sure the recipient is going to love it! You and Barb both worked together to make this quilt look beautiful.

I recently quilted a vintage Sunbonnet Sue quilt for a friend and chose an E2E design because 1) I was renting a shop LA by the hour and she was OK with an overall design. The top was made by her deceased mother and she's thrilled that she can snuggle under the finished quilt.

Not a professional here but I have E2E a friends hand applique quilt. It worked just fine and SHE was happy with it. That's all that counts. I will be looking at your free lesson on this pattern you used. It's gorgeous.

It’s a beautiful quilt and the the quilting enhances this quilt. I personally am a little rebel and don’t give power to the “completely made up quilt police”, the only people who matter are the people involved in the process-- the piecer, the long armer. In my world, piece how and what makes you happy, as a long arm quilter quilt to enhance what made the piecer happy in the first place. It’s fabric, it’s thread coming together to spread joy- if it’s not spreading joy you are doing it wrong!

I have yet to begin to quilt, though have a few projects planned. (Decades long garment sewist!) As an interior designer, my personal aesthetic for interiors is clean/contemporary design - so edge to edge is typically my favorite. As I study quilts I have seen many quilts with stitching so varied and busy, I have felt the piecing and overall design of the quilt was upstaged by the quilting itself. Now I know why!😅 Thank you for the "heads up"!

Do you ever use a spoon foot to “glide over” the handwork or heavy seam joints?
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 10 ай бұрын
I do! It’s a trade off though, because you lose some visibility, so it only works when you aren’t looking for precision placement of the quilting.
