I tried installing onto SanDisk 32GB Cruzer Fit using the Unraid USB Flash Creator, but upon boot I was getting "this is not a bootable disk error". It wasn't until I did the manual installation to the USB that it booted finally booted up. Thanks for your awesome videos and wanted to leave this comment if someone else was running into the same issue. FYI this was v6.9.2

@@karim1485 Sorry, that plan changed to Open Media Vault as my remote server. UNRAID is now used as a FTP Server and local backup to my Windows 2012 server.

Why cant the flash drive contents be moved to a hard drive? Like a M.2 drive thats in my NAS that im running Unraid on? Shouldn't I be able to do that then change the boot sequence in my Bios and run Unraid that way?

Just about to install unraid. How does it check the drives health before you build the array. Ie like using peddlers for prepping a new drive before you install it

After using Unraid for 10+ years, I had no idea about the manual flash backup - thank you! Been dragging and dropping the flash contents periodically. I've often wondered about CA backup - since it backs up to your array, should your flash fail how do you retrieve your backup? Seems like storing your spare car keys in you car, but I'm guessing there's a solution.

There are more than 3 options in the USB Flash creator here. After set everything up and putting it in my machine it says IPv4 and v6 is not set and then it stops on "root" and it needs a password and login.

My current concern is subtle corruption and you don't realize it. For example, my disk.cfg is corrupted. Where can I pull a good one from? What other files might be corrupted? Plugins? Who knows? This is why IMHO there should be a USB raid possibility or something equivalent. Backups won't save you unless you realize it somehow. Can I use a disk.cfg from before I updated my system? Who knows. Not documented anywhere I can find.

I have now for some time wanted to get a server, mainly "just" a video/picture server. I have followed you, Linus Jays2cent, Chris Titus and JuanMTech for a while, but I still have a question. When you have build the server and installed the server software (FreeNas/UnRaid/Linux/Windows server xx), do you then run everything directly from the physical machine, or do you have another machine that connects to the server as a client ? If you use another machine, then how do you set it up so it always runs thru the server before going online ? Which machine needs to be the "most powerfull" ie having the fastest CPU ? I am convinced that the server will rather have a lot of ram and a CPU with as many cores you can afford than having the fastest CPU but please do correct me if I'm wrong. On that notion, I am thinking it will be better building the server using a Threadripper 2950x than the Ryzen 5950x and just load it up with all the ram it can handle

Any changes to settings is also written to the flash drive, learned this the hard way, couldn't change almost anything after my flash became flash drive only when it failed.

Yes my server specs, at the moment they are Server 1( data server), an AMD ryzen 1700, 32 gigs ram, with 20tb array 500 gig cache and a gtx 750ti. Server 2 (My virtualisation serve)r is a Threadripper 2950x, 64 gigs , just one disk for the array (as dont store data on this server) then unassigned ssds that i use for the various vms oh and gpus are a 1080 and a 1050ti. Both servers connected together by 10gbe ethernet. Thanks for watching :)

Specs are i7 8700k, 32Gb RAM, x2 250Gb SSDs, x2 2TB HDDs, GTX 1080 and 1060 6Gb version(i intend on the 1080Ti instead i.e if the price reduces) all in an Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard powered by a 1000w PSU. Is it possible to use these steps to replace a motherboard on a current unraid installation? I want to go from an i7-960 DDR3 to an i7-6700K DDR4 which means replacing the motherboard, CPU, ram, Ethernet and GPU but keeping the array. Suggestions?

PC Wizrd It’s a really simple process, Build your new system, plug in the usb from your old system and boot. It will pickup your disks from their serial number

I dont think any advantage to booting as UEFI. I prefer legacy boot myself.

There are some situations, where its not about writes, or even reads, its total drive speed, some servers only have usb2.0, so updates and reboots take much longer...at least longer than some would like compared to a SATA SSD, or HDD/SHHD

No Unraid boots the OS from the flash drive into ram. It isn't installed onto a hard drive. Also, the license is directly tied to the uuid of the usb flash drive.

Hi Kevin. No you can shutdown the server when not needed without a problem. Alot of people however instead use the sleep plugin to set the server to goto sleep when not need to save on power bills rather than manually shut it down. :)

Not exactly sure why, but when I used the Windows version of the flash creator it did not make it bootable. Once I went into the files and ran the make bootable bat file, all was good.

I've been mostly happy with unRAID but this raises one of the things I really *don't* like about it - I think the documentation is badly lacking some seriously key pieces of information. This video clearly says don't run the make bootable script from the flash drive but to run it from the location you downloaded unRAID to. This is fine and is correct but the official documentation says this: - Extract the contents of the newly downloaded ZIP file onto your USB flash device. - Browse to the USB flash device to see the newly extracted contents from your Mac or PC. - Run the make bootable script. That's missing a very key piece of info - don't run the script from the drive! Not to mention much of the info in the docs is quite unclear. Especially re things like adding disks if they already have data on them. Docs say the disk will be automatically cleared - this isn't actually true as existing data disks can be added and WON'T be cleared unless you select to do that manually (I did this yesterday). Lastly, the configuration on the USB drive is *critical* for the correct function of unRAID. If you damage the flash drive or reimage it and haven't taken a backup, most of your configuration is GONE. Licenses, identification info, customisation, plugins etc - GONE. unRAID isn't clear about this and saying everything is loaded into memory, while accurate, is also misleading (and yes I did watch the whole video, taking note of the backup section). unRAID really needs to keep a copy of the configuration on the built-in "system" share so that it can be referred back to later, in the event of an issue. And I mean *by default*. Not by manually backing it up through the GUI, adding a CA Backup plugin or some other non-factory method. Either that or support mirrored USB flash drives.

I do agree that as UnRaid does position itself as Noob friendly (and with SpaceInvader's videos certainly is), some sort of 1st time user wizard or prompt to ask where to backup the USB config to (and perhaps do so on every boot) would probably prevent some heartache for new users who still have training wheels on... Ed - perhaps you could create a brief "New user start here" video that then points to these videos you've made and suggests how to watch them in correct order that would help guide them away from the common mistakes (you now have so many videos that I think it could be daunting for a new user) !
