We're able to make static, super slow moving stuff pretty much look like real life now. Still not 1:1 realism yet, but we'll definitely reach that before too long now. However, actually making games that are faster motion that look 1:1 real are still a ways away. And like others have commented, as AR and VR takeover, we're gonna be starting from a bit backwards considering how graphics in those fields currently look compared to modern AAA games running on high end gaming computers.

Several things are "off". DoF is using a fast algorithm which is just blurring the scene in screen space (and doesn't really match the places people tend to look at, though that could also be true with a real camera focused to the wrong distance). The leaves seem to be completely opaque (real leaves are slightly translucent). Also (the main problem, IMO), the plants are moving in a weird way, like there's something deforming them randomly from the inside. There's also a butterfly moving in slow motion in one of the shots (if it flapped its wings that slowly, it would fall to the ground).
@xergiok23222 жыл бұрын
The thing that struck me first as "not real" is the lack of translucency in the vegetation. The leaves look plastic.

@theunderdog93532 жыл бұрын
Nahh, it's not. They've been able to make this in the UE for a while now, but tech just isn't far enough to actually turn it into a game and it's probably a long way off. Even a beefy 3090 Ti PC wouldn't be able to run an actual full fletched game that looks like this. It'll probably take 10 years atleast before we get close to this in actual games
@justdev89652 жыл бұрын
Secret of monkey Island? That's like the worst example of graphics, even for its time, it looked unbelievably ugly. That team can't even draw a square if they tried.
@hyeve53192 жыл бұрын
@@theunderdog9353 This particular one might be a render rather than realtime - they don't clarify - but have you seen the real time, playable demos? They get damn close to this level of graphics. Sure, it'll be a while until entire games are able to achieve this level of graphics.. but I think the tech is further along that you think. UE5's nanite and lumen are very very powerful, and far better than anything we've been able to do in realtime engines in the past. (Including in previous versions of UE)
@アマ-p2l2 жыл бұрын
@@hyeve5319 I've seen some gameplay footage and it was terrible. Besides the graphics those demos had nothing going for them, I wouldn't be able to feel immersed at all because the gameplay was so bad and unrealistic. If they prioritize graphics that's the future, I won't find any immersion because the gameplay, realism and everything else becomes a secondary priority when they try very hard to get a game to the next level of graphics. Combine this with the fact that game studios keep releasing unfinished games and releasing unfinished games is becoming a market standard, and you can literally make a game with real life graphics and I will be completely unphazed and bored by your game. The first step to a realistic game is the gameplay, not the graphics. Game studios are already neglecting the game play, this engine just provides more room for following badly chosen priorities.
@hyeve53192 жыл бұрын
@@アマ-p2l ...I think you missed the point somewhat. The point is that they're *able* to achieve that level of graphics in real time, in a playable demo, not just in pre-rendered sequences and cutscenes. In a full game, of course gameplay is incredibly important. In a demo, the important part is just showing what's *possible* As for the unfinished game stuff... eh, I think that's more of a problem with how the games industry works in general, rather than just because they're trying to prioritize graphics. The thing with modern, large studio games, is that they take HUGE amounts of work and money. They often have bigger budgets than full feature films. Yet, people still expect the same year-on-year releases and updates to games, despite them taking more and more and more time and work to create as they get more advanced and bigger. Hence.. there's an awful lot of crunch time. Things get released before they're really finished because the companies are forced into it by deadlines and release schedules, and developers aren't given the time to polish things properly. It's less that it's "becoming a market standard" and more that they're just not given the time needed to finish the games properly as they get bigger and bigger. Regardless, that's not really relevant to the point that UE5 is a massive step forwards in terms of real time graphics - the fact that those graphics are possible is what's impressive, what people use them for is a completely different matter.

Animations will always look like animations. Stop hoping for realistic looking games. And btw, the more realistic games become,the more boring they become.
@Vlow522 жыл бұрын
@@TroenderTass there is one important feature of the realism - immersive action. Our ability to identify the simulated reality is really close to adapting to some sort of setting around. If a human feels comfortable with what he sees in surroundings, the emotions for every fun, sad, unexpected or impossible action will be much more genuine. As for animations, it’s totally possible to make it look real using large AI training and some randomness, which will provide more empathy level for the npc.
@TroenderTass2 жыл бұрын
@@Vlow52 Lol, they have been saying that for years, and it doesn't get any better. You will neve be able to have a human face look realistic, ever. People don't know what they want. Ofcourse you can bring a greater sence of emotion by making it feel real, but that is not really what gamers want. People who want to escape reality want that wich is a hole nother issue in it self. There is a reason why the n64 era with its limited graphics, still produced alot more interesting games then the copy paste games you play to day, wich you only play because of emotional issues.
@giannis_tar2 жыл бұрын
@@TroenderTass wtf is wrong with you? Why are you even here if you hate modern gaming so much?
@dragonessmistress2272 жыл бұрын
@@TroenderTass Having games with ultra realistic graphics isn't a bad thing. They may not have stylized visual, but that doesn't mean the game has to be set in the present or the world we live in. It could take place in the past/future, an alternate world, some place completely alien and still aim to have realistic graphics. It's just how they want to make the game look. Other games can be cell shaded, 2D or something like Borderlands, doesn't matter. It will affect the way they tell the story, but it won't make the game bad alone. I won't disagree with you on the whole "copy paste" thing. Ubisoft's been doing it for every franchise they own now and other companies' been jumping in the same hole. However, I feel like that's off topic since that's more a problem in the core gameplay element than the visuals. Personally, as long as the graphics are appealing and don't ruin my immersion, I'm fine. I like when they pull unique style, but usually when they do so it's to blend with the narration / story telling.

Lol RDR2 still has better graphics than 99% of the games.

I don't think you understand how this was made, and how it could have been replicated in UE4. This isn't actually that amazing from an outward tech perspective (you can do all of this) - but it's almost certainly on how it was made (internally - due to the integration of nanite and lumen). It's not a game however. That's a harder task... as UE5 is currently shaped towards it's strengths... not what people want to necessarily make.

simulated sound could be the future. Looking at where we are with graphics manually recording and pasting sound over footage seems relatively primal.

they did introduce lots of new features regarding procedural sound in ue5 so we may see that soon enough... It's not as impressive and clickbaity on youtube though, maybe thats why we see no one experimenting with it.

@@WaveFunctionVR yeah, i saw and run this on console .... maybe it's just me, but Your material seems to have higher picture / texture quality / resolution than Matrix demo, hence my question :)
@AdelaideBen12 жыл бұрын
@@Rebel_at_Heart they are also presenting at a low res. It's ok though - Matrix also is low res. The advantage - from what I understand - isn't necessarily the resolution you can get (at realistic framerates on realistic machines) - but on the fact that you don't need to do a lot of messing around with LODs. So it helps the devs a lot; and provides a lot more flexible transitions for a smoother look and feel.

I think the biggest graphics issue today is the lack of wind modelling. It seems to me that instead of writing programs that tell plants to move, we should progeam the invisible wind, which should be what moves the plants, the sand and the water. There must be a wind algorithm that tells them how and when to move. Think of it like the software they use when performing aircraft aerodynamic tests. There must be some windblown software hitting the material. Because it catches my eye all the time, dry plants that shouldn't be moving are moving, some trees are more flexible than in real life. The grass is as flexible as jelly.
