In this unplanned retrospective, I revisit the multiplayer of every Unreal game on PC and explain how to enjoy them after the official server's shutdown. Epic can try to wipe their legacy from existences, but Unreal Tournament would live on. #SaveUnreal

Unreal II: The Awakening
Download and install Unreal 2 XMP Community Edition - www.moddb.com/games/unreal-ii... The original game is not required to run this pack.
XMP port to UT2004 - www.moddb.com/mods/utxmp/down... It's not standalone, UT2004 should be installed in order to play it.
Unreal Tournament 2003/2004
Launch the game, open the console by pressing ~ key, paste this line:
set IpDrv.MasterServerLink MasterServerList ((Address="utmaster.openspy.net",Port=28902))
Then press enter and RELAUNCH THE GAME. If it won't work, go to the "System" folder inside of the directory where you have the game installed, and find the file called UT2004.ini. In a section called [IpDrv.MasterServerLink], remove all lines that start with MasterServerList words, and paste MasterServerList=(Address="utmaster.openspy.net",Port=28902) line. Don't forget to save the edited file, and you're all set!
Unreal Tournament 3
It's unknown what will happen with the game after the migration to Epic Online Services. I'll keep this section updated if there will be new alternative ways to play it again.

I remember got a trojan virus from Epic Online Service with Unreal Engine 5 beta back in 2021 called TR/Kazy.78336.20, so I can't trust Epic Online Service again but if they are pushing it over and over, I'm done with Epic Games.

I still play UT99 online and I think that the game will never die, I've been playing it since the year 2000 and I think it would be a very good idea to remaster it with UTengine 5, shame on Epic to eliminate the game, definitely those who lead the industry Unreal Engine are not the same ones that created UT99

Great post - TY for everything. My journey with UT started at work with the UT03 demo that my coworkers were playing at lunch, and we/they later moved on to UT04. So, I played UT04 at home. I always wondered if at the holidays here in the states that more people would appear on the servers around the holidays because the game would play on a laptop with reaonable FPS. ...I wondered if those there were people visiting in-laws and avoiding them. :P Anyway, I took note of UT4 prealpha while it was in the paid section of things and when it went free, I was totally all over it. I still like going back to play the maps I've downloaded here and there from time to time. ...But now - on the horizon - I am having to look at a new reinstall of Win11. ...Realizing that UT4 is not available anymore through the Epic store... ......and nothing new on the horizon... ....now I am sad. :|

Hello PCGI, a few days ago I found out about this news and it seems to me that Epic is making a big mistake when carrying out this action. Personally I have played all the Unreal Tournaments that you have mentioned and also other games from the same era such as Quake or Doom or Half Life or other Old School of those times and they are the ones who have laid several foundations in the FPS that we play today both in weapons , like game modes or other ways. They are games that somehow have to be preserved and allow players if they want to continue playing them, have some way to obtain them. Take, to give you an example, a video game that I currently play like Killing Floor was born from being a mod created for Unreal Tournament and so there are many other types of games that were born from being a mode of some old video game (Team Fortress from Half Life, Dota from Warcraft) Minimally, Epic should at least sell them on its own page, I really don't understand how, even after so long, they didn't dare to make remakes or remasterings with the new unreal engines of these games and they would have made many sales in company with those they already do with Fortnite. It would be unfortunate to have such an FPS loss and make it disappear from its existence and not allow in any way to obtain it. Hopefully with time they realize what they are doing. Outside the topic the Epic Launcher is a disaster really how it works sometimes in terms of slowness and the way it is organized. Greetings from John and waiting for more news. Thankfully, i had UT-4 installed for many months, even though i launched it couple times. But yeah, you can't even see the menu and play with bots, because you can't connect to the server. BUT there is a solution, and i already tried it - which is unofficial fan update UT4UU. There's website (which you need to log in, and create an account there) with couple fan servers, fan patch, and discord server. It works, people play UT4 even through EGS launcher (like i do), but the game is still unfinished and most maps are grey boxes. Also, i didn't know Unreal 1 had multiplayer too, i thought it appeared in UT-1. Speaking of Epic Games - yes, it's a shame. They have so much money (not only from Fortnite, but also from UE that's used in movies and tv-shows as a virtual back screen), they could not only finish UT-4, but also resurrect the whole Arena FPS as a genre - they could have their own e-sports discipline and a Pro-League, and if they did it - i would gladly switch from Quake Champions (which is a mess) to UT.

The next unreal is going to come from an indie developer. From Blizzard to Epic, they make a great game that the fans support and love. It gives them enough momentum to keep going and when they get greedy and start trying to earn money, they shun their original fans. Only a true small indie company can make games like Diablo or Unreal Tournament.

I can understand greedy companies like this not wanting to spend money to support their customers in the long term (and we can take our loyalty elsewhere), but video games should be playable basically forever. if the official servers get shut down, we should be able to run our own servers, pure and simple and they can go away and do whatever they want somewhere else. I can still play games made in the 70's and 80's, but I can't deathmatch with my friends online with a game we legally purchased decades ago???

I loved to play Unreal Tournament all parts, also the 3rd one. I also tested UT4 Demo, it was promising, but that is years ago and nothing happened with this game since. Would love to play some multiplayer matches in ut2004 or ut3. Will try it out soon using your instructions. Hope it will work. Most friends play Fortnite currently, but I just can not bear the "style". It´s so ugly :D

Unreal II XMP was such a blast as a team and class-based "base vs base" shooter with vehicles and capture points... it hurts how little attention it got. It never felt like Unreal, but that didn't really matter. Oh well, back to playing Renegade X.

The footage you show at 5:03 looks like that old time classic Zeitkind or Zahltag, I only knew them for UT99 not for Unreal. Am I right in the maps name? If so they even older then what I had in my memory.

I don't remember the name of this map, but I won't be surprised if you are right. But maybe somebody ported it from UT99 to original Unreal, so your memory is correct as well. As I've shown in this video, some people even ported models from UT2004 to UT99. I don't think that migrating assets between Unreal and UT99 is very difficult, although I never looked at this topic.

I brought my ticket pass & the ticket pass is for the Master ARC Link that has your unique Username badge number you must never show no one & you can only play Monsterhunt, there is only 5 people on the server max atm, I don't think others will do this but LineARC is still creating maps for the server like the traffic lights city which no one has seen or the Wildlands map a part replica of ghost recon

True they shutdown the server but a friend of mine has found away to play on a outside server that allows you to play online only on 1 server but he said he is charging people ticket passes to join the server, the UT99 is now being ran by LineARC master server which is a outside connection to the inside game

Forgive me for my lack of understanding of server architecture, but why does this even have to happen in the first place? The game is already only run by community servers, how is it so hard to just show the god damn community servers? Valve games have a server list for EVERY one of their legacy games, even the MODS for them which have ZERO support from valve whatsoever. I used to play Deathwarrant's Monster Mash on UT2004 back in the day, and even got to play it again with a surprising amount of people just a few months ago, but all of a sudden it's just all dropped like that? Why is it that an obscure half life mod can easily have a persistent hands-free server list while this game can't?

Yes, I'm using Steam version myself, and the community patch works flawlessly. I literally played UT99 online a few hours ago without any issues.

But the steam version has no mods included, I got the older version of GOTY version, it has mods included. So I transferred all of those mods to the steam version or the Unreal Anthology version.

on opinions of the games themselves......I disagree that UT4 felt clunky, I thought it was beautiful to play, I'd argue mechanically the best in the entire series, .... it's pre alpha puts a lot of modern final releases to shame....I started on UT99, loved it., 2004 honestly felt like a poor quake imitation to me, and I love quake, I actually bought Q3 arena on the same day I bought UT99! ....I hated 2004 at first, I got into it a bit later and quite enjoyed it, but the movement felt way too floaty & the graphics looked like a game that came out years before UT99, UT3 was a return to form for me , hated all the big vehicle modes, but the core gameplay mechanics felt more like old UT99 again which I loved, gorgeous graphics for the time but everything was brown/ dark, like gears of war, every game made on that engine had the same look. Thanks for the video, I'll be looking into some of these options as I really miss this game

Still wont load UT2004 Servers past the first screen and all added Faves are "UNKNOWN". Ran a server back in the day and haven't been able to play in years

Make sure that UT2004.ini has only Openspy server listed under [IpDrv.MasterServerLink], the solution won't work if there're any links on old master servers left. As for Favorites, it's not really surprising that they won't load because the adress has changed. Your Faves might be still there on a new master server, but you'll have to find them manually, no other solution I'm afraid.

Unless you have a time machine, I'm afraid not. Unreal complete pack was constantly going on deep sale for 2-3 quid, but after Epic removed it from Steam, those keys are available only on grey markets for absurd prices.

Just to make it clear, you see available servers with players, but can't connect to them? If yes, then just try to join other matches - some servers were failing connection to me as well for unknown reasons while others worked. Might be a server setting to block by location or missing mutators, but I can't say for sure.

IP ban is a thing on a server side, unfortunately I can't help you with that. Try to pick other servers on the list until you find the one that works or try to contact server admins.

Unreal tournament 3 was my introduction to the back in college finally got a good enough PC to be able to run it at Max settings at a decent frame rate buy it on steam and then no longer able to play it online I absolutely despise fortnite it's basically done to them what GTA online has done to Rockstar thankfully on the PC side of things thankfully mudding can happen so thank you for this so that way I can get back to playing my favorite game series

This is a fuc**** disgrace. Epic Games, show some respect for YOUR history and for your fans. I was heavily disappointed by the cancellation of UT4, but this here is just shameful. UT99 wasn't just a pioneer shooter. UT99 nwCTF's competitive gameplay balance and excitement is just legendarily good.

It’s official…the internet is dead!!! Rules by bots, stupid people, clickbait and of course, advertising. Closing old Unreal games is just a way to force people to focus on their newest engines. Epic sucks (never thought I’d say that again….)

A few corrections: - The new UT (UE4) is getting an unofficial master server support from fans: search for "UT4UU" - Epic Games Store is not made by Epic. It is outsourced to contractors, mostly to Epam.

I know about UT4UU, it's mentioned in the pinned comment and title of the chapter. As I've promised in this video, I'm trying to keep the track of community fixes and updates for Unreal Tournament games and update the list when needed. As for EGS, I know that it was outsourced, but I don't see how it excuses Epic for having such a turd of software with their name plastered on it. They had more than enough time to find someone who could do a better job, so it's absolutely Epic's fault this bloatware is still in such a pathetic state over 4 years later.
