Unreported World spends two weeks with police who are outgunned and outnumbered on the new frontline of a bloody drug war in Ecuador. Rival drug cartels have taken over the once peaceful city of Guayaquil in a bid to control lucrative new drug routes to Europe and the United States.
The South American country was until recently better known for tourism than for cocaine fuelled violence. But that’s all changing, turning daily life for many into a quest for survival. In 2021, more than 2400 people were killed in Ecuador as the country’s murder rate doubled. Sandwiched between the cocaine producing nations of Colombia and Peru, Ecuador's largest city has now become the new arena for rival Mexican drug cartels that control drug exports from the region.
WARNING - this film contains some distressing scenes.

I live in Central America. I often visit Portugal, they seem to have found an answer. They legalized all drugs. The cartels moved out, crime decreased, free drug rehabilitation and no jail overcrowding. They solved their problem, by eliminating the profit motive.

i was about to reiterate this. the police force does not have the monetary resource to combat the cartels. they are severely underfunded. there are police stations that have all resigned after facing cartels and being outgunned and outmanned. the best way is to legalize the industry because the war on drugs is ineffective policy. the prohibition in the US is the best example.

Problem is Latin American countries legalizing or decriminalizing drugs isn't going to fix the situation. Because the driving force behind drugs is the demand in the US. We need American politicians to admit that the War on Drugs has been useless and to adopt some radical Public Health focused drug policy that would render the cartels irrelevant. Unfortunately most politicians are still stuck in the old days

As an Ecuadorian, I can certify this. The country is getting more dangerous everyday. And something not stated in the video is that people are now killed with the brutality of Mexico’s cartels, bodies are now being left beheaded, quartered in public, just to other people to see and become afraid of the drug cartels. I hope this really comes to an end, but it’s just getting worse daily

i recently came back from a two month trip to ecuador, and you can tell in the vibes how dangerous it is. you can’t dress in nice clothes in fear of getting robbed, you can’t have a phone or headphones out and visible, can’t leave at a certain time, can’t go to certain places, can’t even take a taxi in fear of the driver being killed. it’s very dangerous in guayaquil, but more specifically durán, la troncal and el triunfo. people are getting killed everyday, multiple times a day, sometimes even innocent people die.

BS. China declared war on the UK when the UK was selling opium to their people. The problem is the corruption in Latin American countries. Drugs is only one part of organized corruption, the gangsters have many legitimate businesses too. The US and Europe have drug problems but our leaders are not working with drug cartels like Latin American country politicians. The US/Europe has gone too soft/weak/woke on other countries when it comes to drugs,. We should treat it like an act of war. Plenty of Asian countries keep drugs to a minimum because they have strict laws and drug dealers are executed.
@smeggyhead1

@Gold KK I think you have it backwards. The government would get much larger 'kickbacks' from the tax of legalising the sale these products. Even if all were legalised, the cartels will still keep going as they can produce the same but much cheaper than that produced cleanly under tight food-type regulations.

10 years ago, even Ecuador was a peaceful country with no established cartels and no hired killers on the order of the day… I left my country hoping to return one day, but that day I see it more and more distant, it makes me angry to see our sad reality and You see it too. I feel sorry for my compatriots, hard-working people who are happy fighters who have lost the right to live in their land in peace, I have always said it and I will support it: the same day that former president Rafael Correa removed the Manta base, our country was sentenced to be the land of drug traffickers, Ecuador in my heart and prayers!

It reminds me of the cemetery city they have in The Philippines in the slumps as it's so scary to see how common this is throughout Latin America all the way up to the Mexican Border as I'm from Arizona myself and drugs are still quite an issue out here as well. What also upsets me is to see the parents that lost their sons or not sure if they will ever see them again as it's so heartbreaking to see how this happens so often in poor regions of these families.

If you can keep check yourself from the hunger of addiction then I agree with you saying “everyone should have a choice” but in reality addicts could no longer think as human, they see people around them as animals or their prey to take advantage. they don’t care even killing their own family, that’s why I could say, you saying this was just a “wishful thinking”. I lived in Quito when i was girl in the early 90s and even back then even i knew it was dangerous to travel to Guayaquil. the only time i went it was to visit one of my moms girlfriends who lived there and when we told then what roads and neighborhoods we travelled throough to get to her house they almost had a heart attack and were amazed nothing happened to us. Quito is no better either but thats more government sanctioned political violence against the people. i lived there for a year in 2011 when correa was president and he had a hot line set up for his correistas (his lunatic stans) to call and have people arrested like the gestapo or the secret police.it was a nightmare being there the first few months.

Exactly! I would also add that it was a social experiment to test compliance and in Ecuador the percentage was very high that complied. That plays into the hands of both government and cartels when most of the people would rather comply than resist and hence why the cocaine business is booming in little Ecuador! I lived there around 10 years ago and last visited in 2019 and I can see how much worse it's become since the plandemic eroded what little freedom remained... This ends only when the people themselves stand up for each other and their community !
