My dad got kidnapped 4 weeks ago, locally the kidnappers let him go. The problem was the Police in Toluca and the system is so corrupted from the state, judicial, and local authorities always want money. It is another lesson of Mexico magico where, you can get incarcerated, calcinated and the Police is worse than the Cartels.

The police in Mexico I encountered in 3 months there, were criminals themselves. I got robbed by them in Tulum and met at least 5 tourists who also were robbed by them in a short period there. Locals I met told me it's normal being harassed by them and having to pay them off. Women told me they would do random car stops to sexually assault them. For the lovely civilians I met there I hope they can one day live in peace, but can't see how, as the country is riddled with corruption and criminality even up to the highest ranking positions (CEOs, politicians etc)

I don’t understand. Pretrial detention is normal here in the states. I’ve know people that have sat in jail for almost 10 years before their trial. And that was by choice. It’s common for you to sit in jail for months even years depending on the severity of your case. I think the main story here isn’t pre trial detention, I think it’s about how easy it is to be named a suspect and locked up with no investigation at all.
@arsethr.g3787Ай бұрын
In mexico it's called preventive prison (prisión preventiva) but the thing is prosecutors will forgot about you and they won't investigate.
@OutragedPufferfishАй бұрын
There's nothing normal about long pre-trial detention. Sitting in jail is a punishment whether it's pre-trial or after conviction, so if you spend too much time in jail without being convicted, that's an injustice and abuse.
@OutragedPufferfishАй бұрын
I live in the Netherlands and pre-trial detention can last a maximum of 110 days here. Keeping someone in jail for years before they're brought to trial is never necessary and always the result of incompetence and corruption.

You outsiders have zero clue, so you can't make a fair judgment on what goes on in México. I as a mexican can tell you that we Mexicans have some of the blame because 90% of those people you see protesting and complaining about violence have at least 1 family member who benefits or benefited either directly of indirectly from drug money. So yeah, there's a lot of hypocrisy going on, people stay quiet and actually promote the narco life style for as long as it benefits them, they never complain untill one of their relatives who were in the narco gets kill@d or goes missing. The narco culture is a lifestyle. But the main culprits are the USA govt and it's people, all the guns and weapons used by the cartels are coming from USA and then there's the high drug demand coming from their dysfunctional population that someone needs to fullfill, after all this is a business and a very lucrative one, it actually makes zero sense to not supply that demand.

In Mexico if you don't have a sentence within 1 year you can go to federal court and demand to be freed, when a criminal case takes longer than 1 year its because the defense lawyer is asking for more time to provide evidence, defense lawyers usually do this to charge more. Even so, to be jailed you need to take the criminal to court to an audience called 'audiencia de control' where the district attorney lawyer has to provide proof of the crime being committed, if there isn't enough evidence the case might still continue but the person detained will not be jailed. As a former DA lawyer in the state of Chihuahua I can guarantee you that none of the people in jail are innocent.
