I agree. All they really needed to do was paint the walls the light colors like they did, use most of the original furniture that fit the motif, and scale down HEAVILY on the highly decorative wall hangings. Also, simplify the curtains. Think Gothic mixed with classic Victorian and English garden flourishes.

+Phyllis Arrington I agree! When you live with someone who's taste is-to put it politely- over the top then it's always a miserable battle of styles! I had a friend of mine move into my home twice (when he was evicted) and each time I had to fight to keep him from turning my home (as my friend put it) into a "chamber of horrors." He was only there long enough to save enough money to find another place, it wasn't even his PERMANENT home, yet he fought to impose HIS style over mine. Since the house is HER house she is likely under the assumption that he is just gonna accept her current decor...WRONG! This guy clearly has a strong, "take charge" personality and it's clear his taste for the bizarre hasn't changed one bit. I have my serious doubts that any kind of an "in between" compromise is gonna be reached once he moves into her home and it becomes THEIR home. Either she accepts him turning her home into a carbon copy of what he formerly had, or I give this relationship no more than six months.

Ha! "brown and cream" is sort of what I was thinking to make it sell LoL :) Remove all the carpets and replace with one continuous wood floor, paint all of the walls off white, and all of the trim and baseboards should be wood toned like they are in the entry room. Maybe update a few things like fireplace and kitchen/bath fixtures, and remove the frilly millwork on the exterior, but otherwise leave it be. Show it with no furnishings to make it as much of a blank canvas as possible. If they were to show off just the bones of the house, without the mishmash of patterns and colors, I think it would appeal to more ppl.

@@jelle3248 The penchant for beige walls in North America has always completely baffled me. It's an incredibly plain and boring color yet at the same time it isn't actually as neutral and inoffensive a color as people claim. Where I live the norm is to simply paint the walls white when selling a house/moving out of an apartment (usually required per rental agreement) and the next person will repaint with whatever color they like and I have to say I much prefer this method. I always wonder if there's actually people who truly love the color beige or if they just don't care about colors as long as it isn't too garish.

YES! Hell to the no am I living in a house with multiple occupants and there's just one bathroom. Nope, did that most of my life growing up, but no more! Nothing worse than waking up from sleep really needing to pee and someone's in the shower or they're using the toilet themselves. Even a half bath would make a load of difference. And I'm going to guess that others are thinking the exact same thing and that's adding to the long sell time. I don't care how nice the house is, if the amount of bathrooms to bedrooms is off, I'm not buying. 3 bedrooms and up should, in my opinion, always have a half bath at least. A lot of older homes don't but that should be something to add on to bring more value for if you ever sell it.

As a buyer, I would have loved having that woodwork and that front door in my new old house. That's an amateur plaster job, with trowel-marks EVERYWHERE. It's plaster, but not Venetian. Venetian plaster has actual marble dust in it, and as used originally, it was burnished to a smooth, hard gloss. It can actually look like marble. (Be careful. It makes your trowel SHARP. I've cut myself pretty badly.) People starting doing weird, technicolor, lumpy things with plaster in the 80s and 90s, and now they think that any ploppy, roughed-up plaster is "Venetian" plaster. The terms "Venetian" and "Tuscan" have been bandied about and abused pretty liberally.

Worst "Venetian plaster" job I've ever seen, and I use that term very loosely. The trowel marks look like sticks of straw painted onto the walls.

I do love the cathedral doors & windows. I liked the marble look, but not the gouged out look...Kitchen is too small, and I would have painted out the cabinets, to make it look bigger.

I wonder if they sold it or if people were still put off by the strange gothic windows. I would have been calculating how much it would cost to replace them and to get rid of all of the faux gingerbread on the outside of the house.

I actually loved the original color of the foyer and didn't see where pastel mint green was an improvement. This was a beautiful, interesting house, before Unsellables changed anything.

pretty funky. Pretty cool but way too dark. It's strange that in that large home is only one bathroom

Did they just use plywood to make the two kitchen drawer fronts and cabinet door above? Am I seeing that correctly? Because that's what it looks like. I would've rather seen baskets in the spaces than plywood fronts.

I like (LOVE) the original house (except the kitchen), it had so much character. The "template" remodel killed so much of character and imbalanced the main character of the house. If anyone don't like the uniqueness of the house, who can they just get boxed templated houses already on the market?
@aadams1006

The idea is that the house had character, but it was entirely his design and decor. They won't leave it the way it is, they just need to be able to imagine their own stuff and style in there and it was just so overwhelming they couldn't see it.

I mean, it's easy enough to say, but he couldn't find that perfect buyer who would love the house as much as he did, and couldn't wait any longer to sell. All the people who wanted boring box houses were buying them instead of his house and he needed to sell. Sad? Yes. Necessary? Also yes.
