Tired of his long daily commute, Gary wants to sell his riverside property next to London’s Limehouse Basin and move closer to work…But after six months, only four viewings, and not a single offer, his home is languishing on the market. On the plus side, the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home offers a Thames-view balcony and is close to central London, but with its bachelor pad living room, frilly, pastel-coloured master suite, and confusing guest bedroom-cum-dining room, the property is completely unsellable.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to revitalize the home’s prospects. And while John motivates the agent to take initiative, and asks Gary to clear out of his house, Sofie devises a contemporary design plan to balance the home’s yin and yang. Will the spectacular results finally attract a buyer?

What are the odds a buyer would want a room with asian-inspired black and white wallpaper, a raspberry feature wall, and a weird blue bedroom? This makeover was all over the place.

That's the deceptive virus eating away at this particular program. The producers don't show all of a home's rooms, and then tell us what the budget is and which rooms the show is going to attack and improve so the home will sell. NOT showing us, the viewers, each & every room from the get-go is a big mistake, in my humble opinion.

The kitchen was kinda meh. Also I feel like the layout might be odd. If they turned the room with the dining table into a bedroom, does it not have a dining room? The kitchen looked like an eat in, but if you are marketing as a 3br I think you are trying to appeal to families, but lack of dining room probably makes that a hard sell.

Once again they have done cheap patching instead of fixing, and the buyer will have a lot of work to do in repainting and removing wallpaper. And that headboard will screw up the wall when someone else doesn't like the shoddy workmanship and wrinkles, and tries to take it down.

Yes. I feel like she's lost her touch & interest & is just going through the motions. Just, 'Ok, what cheap cosmetic changes & IKEA jimcracks can we put in here this week & call it a wrap?' But it is an ugly, ugly house with no character, warmth, craftsmanship or charm about it. Like they knew they could sell any crap bog standard building in that location, and they did. But people want warmth & home, not a few rooms tarted up to look like knock-off IKEA showrooms.

Transformed from bad to really horrible! I know it's 13 years ago but accent walls are never a good idea when selling your home. I thought that 'neutral' was the name of the game. I had friends who lived in a similar house in docklands and the kitchen was the only room on the ground floor with no real space to eat. It meant carrying hot food up a very twisting staircase!

Somebody would have to _really_ like color to buy this place, or be willing to repaint, with that red kitchen, mint bedroom, raspberry wall and then that wallpaper. I know all of my belongings would clash with the walls in that place. I would have kept the white walls and replaced those dated sconces, replaced the bedding, and hung some colorful abstract artwork.

Supports my theory of this show. When the walls are white or light "we need colour to brighten the place up", and when there is colour "there's too much colour here, lets tone it down to white". I don't get it. Seriously, that "cool blue" isn't cool, and that "raspberry" is more magenta.

I wish Gary had to explain how he ended up with the 90s country bedroom. 😳 The turquoise paint wasn't neutral and could turn some buyers off. Why not just paint it white and add accents? I was surprised to see the raspberry feature wall in the ginormous bedroom. It would have been better to paint it a neutral gray and just add raspberry accents like pillows and a framed picture. Where was the dining room created after removing it? I was so confused as to the layout of the house. If it hadn't sold after 6 weeks, I'm wondering what was wrong.

Sofie did it all before, it was pertinent for her to hear the reasons from the agent and ask the questions but this is skipped since someone else is doing it. The very idea of accent walls is all wrong; it comes off as a cheat, a replacement for lack of artwork or other accessories on the wall. And wallpaper is just out. Strong accent walls are done in retail showrooms and in stores for that wow factor, but that's to attract attention for a short period of time. I suppose that can be useful for selling the house, but it's not what you want to do in a space that's lived in whether home or office.

Thats just England for you. The spaces are smaller. It’s all like that pretty much. But to be fair. Open floor plans are on there way out. Not everyone cares for them. They aren’t really in the position to tear down a wall and everything would be better. The rooms don’t usually connect like that where it would make sense anyways. Colors. Eh. Not everything needs to be neutral. Accent walls can work if they were done better. I probably would not have done the master all blue. That was the most offensive thing to me. Felt too child like. I think a white wall or gray would have done better in that case. To let the light from the gorgeous window speak for itself. Got to be careful thinking only neutral because people can still go very wrong with neutral to the point of boring and bland. That and beige neutrals are early 2000s so those are defiantly out nowadays. Tho this was in the 2000s so might if worked better then. Also dealing with the 2008 market which umm, ouch. May not be america but pretty sure everywhere was struggling during the recession of 2008.

At the 19 minute mark (having fast forwarded as usual past all of John's bits) I could stand it no longer - I had to read the comments. Phew - I'm not alone - so far (and only two rooms have been painted) the consensus seem to be "hideous colour choices". However, what really stopped me in my tracks was John's suggestion that the vendor should move out so as to give the agent more opportunities to show the residence..... let's recap - vendor works 10 to 12 hours each day - further he has a 1.20min commute each way - so in other words the vendor is absent from the property 12hr.40min to 14hr.40min (each day!). All I can say is that London agents must be amazing.... they obviously like to show houses at 3am or 11pm!! Seriously impressive dedication. Further I suspect Sophie or John are friends with the vendor's ex and they fully intend sabotaging his chances of selling the property for a reasonable price and at the same time making his life as uncomfortable as possible by making him move out.

These people come in like all the time every house needs to be stage for someone to see potential. It sure makes things easier. But usually when I’m housing shopping I’m well aware that someone else’s taste in furniture isn’t going to be there when I move it. The only time I think it’s a problem is when someone has way too much furniture that you are unable to see the space or if there are cosmetic issues that pertain to the actually house and not someone else’s furniture. If the carpet extremely dirty that something to consider. Someone got an ugly throw blanket. Not really something I need to deal with. Bad appliances? Sorta a big deal. Granny bedroom? Doesn’t matter it ain’t staying. I’m more concerned with features that are staying and mechanicals. And if people really need something to be stage in order to want it, to bad because my god they are going to miss out on sweet deals. You think a house isn’t selling because of bad taste in furniture scaring away buying. Great opportunity to try and low ball the sellers. Also. Location. Location. Location. If the house is good standing. Good location. Good price. Who care if someone has leather sofas. Again. Staging does help. But my god in this situation I wouldn’t say someone else’s sofa is a deal breaker.

If you're selling your house with its current furnishings in it, you need to stage it. Buyers DO NOT WANT TO SEE THE CURRENT LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE SELLER. Period. Get rid of personal photos, handmade crap, sports/music posters etc., bathroom towels, clean out kitchen cabs/closets down to just a few items, remove rugs, remove accessories on the kitchen/bathroom counters, change bed sheets and DUST OFF the hard case items and clean the house. This is just a small list... You'd be surprised how many houses I've had to deal, then to be sold AFTER paring down their crap and rearranging the furniture. Alot of realtors don't care squat about staging.

The loungeroom was actually pretty good to start with by today's decor standards -- it was fairly minimalist and neutral, and the animal skin throw was ahead of its time. The room just needed a bit of inspiration with layout and better decor touches. The amount of black in itself would by no means be an automatic turnoff for women today. I feel the final result is fine, but the room would have looked just as good, maybe more acceptable to buyers, with neutral accents such as tan and mustard. BTW why did they hang the picture of the bamboo leaves sideways 23:22 ?! smh. However, the master bedroom!! that pastel aqua colour says "little girls' bedroom" to me - guaranteed to confuse buyers. The brass bedstead belongs in a country cottage-- i don't know why the team left this Victoriana piece there, it really killed the modern vibe and, if anything, reinforced the little girl feel. The 3rd bedroom turned out well enough - but a dark feature wall? the final look reminded me exactly of standard hotel room decor. That made it less "home-like", so I think the team missed the mark here.

Why not use the same blue in all of the bedrooms. That pink was nauseous on the feature wall. Also I don't understand why these UK shows don't pick a colour or shades of a colour and go with it throughout. The kitchen was a bit down market for something that price too. It needed something more expensive looking with new appliances. At the very least the walls in the kitchen needed painting. The timber windows inside needed to be white too instead of the dark dingy brown..

It is presumptuous to put patterned wall paper and bold colors on the walls. Now the Buyer has to cater their belongings to the color scheme. I find estate agents really lazy....they think that sticking it in their shop window and on the internet is going to sell the property clearly thats not the case! In an ideal world for the estate agent everyone would be moved out of their property and into another....but most people dont want to have two mortgages...so stop using excuses and do your job!

I prefer John and his local color, along with his direct (brutal) approach to lazy agents, to Anthony. Anthony's favorite "wood" is MDF. I've seen him paint over miles of fabulous chestnut in period homes, install unusable 12" bistro bars facing a wall in country kitchens, destroy antique brick Arts and Crafts fireplaces with Home Depot tile...I wouldn't let either him or Sofie in my house. Have only ever done a feature wall in my daughter's bedroom - pink - because I didn't want her to decide a year later she hated it! When I was a child no-one would have had one wall different - everyone would have said "did you run out of paint then?"!

Can't remember either what was "in" during 2008! Re lockdowns: our two major eastern states are in lockdown, and we're hoping the curve is starting to appear. They might not be out until October at earliest. The state of Queensland had a strict lockdown for about 5 weeks, but they've now had about a week of zero cases, which is amazing considering this infectious Delta variant. Finally, our vaccination rates are starting to climb as supply improves. Thankfully, I'm in South Australia (SA), which hasn't had more than a week of lockdown since 2020. But we are always wary of any leaks into SA from the eastern states. Stay safe my friend 🙋‍♀️
