Thanks for watching! How do you manage unsolicited advice?

Here I am - giving unsolicited advice about unsolicited advice 😂

Once I was at the gym and I saw someone doing an exercise improperly. I have him unsolicited advice and he looked at me like I was an idiot. Lesson learned.

Haha 😂 Well, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink :)

I think most people mean well when they give unsolicited advice because it's probably something that worked for them. The problem is that what works for one person may not necessarily work for someone else, and it also may not be that easy for that person to just do the thing that is being recommended to them. "Just do what I'm doing" assumes that the person has the exact same life as you down to the minor details.

Great points Armir. When I offer unsolicited advice (haha), it's usually framed as, "this is what helped me when I was in a similar situation." It often helps the other person stay more open and receptive.

@@MikeWangCoaching So is it good or not? Helping the other person stay more open and receptive is a good thing right?
@MikeWangCoaching2 жыл бұрын
@@Aethelhadas The short answer: it depends :) If the unsolicited advice is not capable of being received, it actually creates distance between you and the other person. So even if well-intentioned, it creates separation between two people. If the other person is truly open and receptive, then I would say it's definitely a good thing.

Yes this is soooo true! I’ve experienced this and always get defensive. And in the same respect I am not more cognizant of the fact that I do this sometimes too. I need to recognize when I’m doing this!
@MikeWangCoaching3 жыл бұрын
Haha - I hear you! I try to be more aware of how the other person is receiving my advice. Or I try to frame it as "if it were me" or "when I've gone through this in the past, what I found helpful was..." It often allows it to land more softly :)

Nice new setting! Usually if the person seems genuinely concerned or is trying to help, I would not be offended. Tone and context matters. Thanks for this thought-provoking message.

Thanks Judy! I'm actually out of town right now and just wanted to create a quick video :) And true about tone/context. For me, it's ultimately about whether it's bringing two people together - or pushing them apart. Congrats on 2K+ btw!

It can be tricky to handle unsolicited advice (this is something I need to learn too). As you said, I approach advice-giving by considering the other party's boundaries.
@MikeWangCoaching3 жыл бұрын
Great point about boundaries! I didn't even explicitly get into that with this short video. But I think awareness of whether an interaction is draining or not is a good indicator. Thanks for watching :)

The giver of unsolicited advice has oftentimes good intention. But true, when we share our feelings or concerns we really just want to be listened to.
@MikeWangCoaching2 жыл бұрын
Very true! Sometimes if I'm not sure what the other person needs in the moment, I'll ask them :)
