Alana "Laney" Gwinner, 23, disappeared after bowling with friends in December 1997. Investigators say, Laney walked outside to her parked Honda Del Sol around 1 a.m. and was never seen alive again.
Laney was found deceased and floating in the river 65 miles down river from the Bowling Alley.

Since the beginning of the investigation, detectives have said that the missing car is a critical piece of evidence.
In this episode of Adventures With Purpose, we meet up with Forensic Science teacher Randy Hubbard and former student Evan Fletcher who have been have been staying working the case to piece together timelines and talk to investigators about what happened to Gwinner the day she disappeared in December 1997.
Laney had finished her finals. She was out with a friend. They were playing pool, and she was leaving to go to her boyfriend’s house, but she never made it there that night in 1997.
When Gwinner did not show up for work the next day, her family and friends were alarmed and alerted authorities. They spent weeks searching for Gwinner.
Gwinner and friends met up about 10 p.m. at a bowling alley in nearby Fairfield, Ohio. After midnight, Gwinner left to drive to her boyfriend's house, about 2 miles up the road.
She never made it.
Her boyfriend and relatives soon went to the bowling alley to look for Gwinner but did not find her or her car, a black 1993 Honda Civic CRX Del Sol.
When she did not show up for work the next morning, police were called and Gwinner was reported missing. Her car was put in the national databank for critical missing vehicles.
Police interviewed hundreds of people and administered about 100 lie detector tests to friends and others who knew her, including Gwinner's boyfriend.
Everyone passed, and no viable leads were uncovered.
A month later, the case was blown wide open.
In Covington, Kentucky, outside Cincinnati, a police officer was involved in a scuffle while trying to make an unrelated arrest on a bridge over the Ohio River.
The officer fell and passed away in the icy waters below.
During the search for him, someone saw something floating on the water near Warsaw, Kentucky, about 65 miles from the bowling alley.
It was Gwinner's body, fully clothed and in good condition.
Her passing was ruled a homicide.
The car with Ohio license plate AKP-3607 has never been found.
Although more than two decades have passed, Gwinner’s family members and friends have not forgotten her and never will.

I really wish that people would stop complaining about whether or not the car was found. So what if Jacob mistook the the tree branch for the hood of the car. With the visibility of that water it would be an easy thing to do. Just be grateful that we still have people in the world who volunteer to help families without expectations of being paid. I personally would like to say "Thank you" for all they do.

It scares the hell out of me that u don’t really know who has or has not. Iv thought about this while in large crowds. Or even at the grocery store checking out. I was at the beach on spring break years ago (long time ago lol) and some kids were sitting at a stop sign. A car or truck coming down the highway runs off the road and t-bones them. When the cops got there only one truck was there. The wreck was so horrific the law thought for sure the other car would be around the corner. Nope! So someone got away with 2 high school kids lives right there. Iv often wondered if I knew or ever crossed paths with the people responsible.

I spent 13 years as a Honda Automotive Parts Manager from the late 80's into the early 2000's. Personally I think someone probably took the car and parted it out. Back in the 90"s Civic platform shined just a bit brighter than any of its counterparts from other marques, and it remains popular among many today. My son and I owned 13 Crx's and currently he owns a 1996 Civic Hatchback and a S2000. The Del Sol line replaced the Crx lineup with Honda and were highly sought after in the 90"s.
@turn6garage640
@turn6garage640 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I think the demand for parts, specifically for Del Sol specific bodywork, targa roof and trim in late 1997 after the car just went out of production would have meant there was incentive to part the car out. They could even have chopped the VIN out and re-registered it as another Del Sol in another state. I am not sure if that avenue was ever checked from the information in this investigation, it doesn't look like these possibilities have been considered. If the car was taken somewhere and turned around within a matter of hours either parted or with the identity of another CRX, it might explain why there was no trail on the car.
@bobbykoenning5566
@bobbykoenning5566 3 жыл бұрын
@@turn6garage640 Exactly! There is a lot of Honda's during that time period that are now register with rebuilt titles. I recently looked into purchasing a clean Honda Crx. 9 out of 10 I looked at did not have a clean title. I'm thinking she walked out into that parking lot and was killed for her car after refusing to give it up.
@turn6garage640
@turn6garage640 3 жыл бұрын
@@bobbykoenning5566 That's what I have been thinking as well. If the pictures provided of Alana's Del Sol are what it looked like when she disappeared, a straight and clean 1993 Del Sol, someone would have easily been able to sell it off, especially if they had a ready buyer. If this was the case, whoever did this was a professional thief and it's likely there was more than one person involved with the car reaching its destination before daybreak after they dumped Alana in the river. They should release the VIN, build date and specification of Alana's car and see if any trace of it still exists in another car. It might be worth checking records of Del Sols that were re-registered in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and possibly even Tennessee between December 1997 and April 1998 to see if there are any potential cars that might match the description of Alana's Del Sol.

I did a little researching this morning pertaining to when the officer fell into the water. He fell into the Icy Ohio River on January 4th 1998 and wasn't found until May 18, 1998 11 miles down stream. Alana Gwinner was found near Warsaw KY 65 miles from Fairfield, Ohio. In my opinion there is no way her body floated 65 miles down the Great Miami River to the Ohio River in a month. There are way too many sand bars in the Great Miami for her body to wash up on unlike the Ohio River. I say her body and maybe her car was dumped into the Ohio River.
@gemmamegson8052
@gemmamegson8052 3 жыл бұрын
I'm also skeptical that the car was dumped in the river. In the month from her disappearance to finding her body then any car dumped, burnt out or crushed at a junk yard wouldn't have been suspicious
@rebeccaburns2307
@rebeccaburns2307 3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to read the comments before I started investigating, but just from this video I can’t see how her body could travel 65 miles from where she was last seen to where her body was found. That’s not to say the car wasn’t dumped in the Miami river, but I don’t believe her body was dumped in the Miami. I’m guessing the investigators do not believe it either.

We learned how to identify the height and direction of blood droplets and how to identify the time of death of a deceased body using Algor/Liver/Rigor mortis. This was 13 years ago that I took the course. Mason High School is amazing for having the Cold Case projects at their school, while teenagers aren’t experts, a teenage mind works differently than an adult and it very well could be that different perception that sees a piece of evidence that was overlooked by the original case detectives. You guys might consider including a sort of map of the area where you have searched. I drive a semi over right thru the park area that I'm assuming you were searching in. There are rock/sand quarries just north of that location as well that would hide a car easily. When the river floods it gets into the quarries easily enough and covers up the road, but I don't know if it flooded in between when she went missing and when she was found. Also don't know if the quarries were there at that point in time.

These things, like most Hondas, rusted like crazy. I assure you that the body and chassis were made of metal. Other parts were made of aluminum and plastic. So yes, a magnet may not stick to the roof for example but it would attach to the body. Very few cars, even newer ones are made largely out of plastic, besides maybe the bumpers. Wouldn’t make them very safe.

@@PeaceMeBish Yes they rusted a lot but many smaller economic cars from Honda, Toyota, Saturn, Pontiac, etc... used a plastic exterior body parts with interior door impact bars to cut down on weight. They dump a newish car in the river rather than get caught or traced back to any part of the car that could put them in prison. They couldn't care less about the car itself, or it's value. I don't believe that a murderer would ever take the chance on dumping it in a field, and any part of that vehicle being found again. Even the engine is stamped with a VIN. If a VIN inspection is done and the VIN numbers don't match on the frame and engine, they most certainly can and will run both VINs to make sure neither comes up as stolen or with any flags.
