It's Mystery Monday time! And this one is close to me... literally. It happened in my hometown.
The 1970's in Rochester NY were a time when kids played outside all day without supervision, until three girls were assaulted and murdered. They had many things in common, but the most startling were their twin initials...
Here is the story of the Alphabet Murders.
Note: I apologize for my mic issues. It was recording in mono, not stereo. I have fixed the issue and going forward it will no longer happen. Thank you for bearing with me. You're the real MVP.
Song at the end of the video by the wonderful and talented Liam Erixon, check out his channel here for more of that voice:

I'm only half way through this video but I'm leaning toward it being someone that worked in the school. Which would explain how he knew their first and last names started with the same letter. Which would also make the kids trust them because they saw him every day at school. U also mentioned each child had disabilities which makes me wonder if they all were in special ed classes..

svolden614 many schools do this. When I was in elementery, I would get bullied. My teacher would get mad at me for being a disruption. When I started my freshman year as well, I had a bigger chest and I would have to run and I would get introuble for distracting the boys. U started to hold my chest as I ran and got detention for distraction and chewed out for being ‘sexual.” But the guys who made fun of me didnt get shit. Teachers just dont give a fuck.
@gertskook

Schools say they care for the children of being bullied but they don’t. They make it worse. I got detention for 3 weeks cause I went and told the teacher what was happening and what my bully was doing. And what happened I got detention for being a snitch. When it was happening for months and I was getting to the point of not wanting to be in school. But I loved school (weird I know but I loved science arts history and reading a lot). There’s a reason bullying is so high along with depression and sadly suicide all mostly due to school teachers and bullies.
@jonahlevin67
@jonahlevin67 4 жыл бұрын
@@gertskook Conservatives, and idiots (there's enormous crossover in both groups) think that bullying should be expected and that it does no harm, and that bullies shouldn't be reprimanded for their cowardly actions. That is, naturally, complete nonsense. Bullying can leave a permanent imprimatur on the victim's psyche, leaving them mistrustful, depressed, unable to interact socially and prone to drug, alcohol and food issues. Conservatives like to ridicule 'safe rooms', and any other measures developed to give victims some respite from their tormentors, because they were, and are, without doubt bullies themselves. It's easy also, to tell children to "Be Best", as it regards online bullying, despite the strange use of the vernacular, but the message itself is corrupted, when you can't even control the bully you share a home and family with. The hypocrisy of saying "My wife's son, Barron is off limits" because he's just a child, but then you go out and ridicule another child, Greta Thuneberg to a crowd of geering adult imbeciles, is incredible. No, there's a LONG way to go before we come anywhere close to solving the bullying issue, and a perplexing message like "Be Best" just doesn't come off as sincere. She may as well wear a coat emblazoned with the words, "I don't really care, DO YOU"?

I think half of them are dead now. >:-D

It definitely is a whole new world, even from when I grew up in the late 80s and 90s in the US. My mom used to always send me to the corner store to buy bits and pieces that we needed, even when it was dark. My dad would travel to other states for seasonal work and we didn’t have a car, so it’d be my mom with 3 children, my younger brothers are 10 months apart so it was like having twins for her. I was relied on quite a lot since I am 6 years older than my brothers. But from then to when my baby sister was born (we’re 16 years apart) my mom didn’t let her go anywhere. We lived in a small, poor type of town and it was usual for a lot of families to do the same with their older children. Sometimes we’d go to a neighbour and ask if one of their kids could come with and they’d have a list as well to pick up. Now days though my niece and nephew (my brothers kids) aren’t allowed to play in the front yard or go outside without an adult.

Slightly different modus operandi doesnt have to mean different killer. It could be that Carmen's killing was personnal as you said. He beat her and faced her while he strangled her. Maybe with the other girls he was trying to relive the first killing. That would explain why he needed to bribe them (he felt kind of guilty for using them) and strangled them from the back so he would not see their face but imagine it was Carmen again. Just a (creepy) theory...
@MariPM1971

It could just mean the killer evolved his method. Like it was stated maybe he changed how he stangled them by seeing the face of Carmen as he killed her. It could have ruined the possible pleasure he might have gotten from the rape. Just a thought...

I feel like carmon was beaten more and strangled in a more personal reason and left in a undressed way because he was angry she tried to escape/he hadn't done it before and was more excited and nervous because of the situation. He probably started giving "treats" to the girls because it he wanted to have them trust him and not to make the same mistakes and he was more experienced and calculated.

It’s hard not to blame Wanda’s mother a little bit when we know how vulnerable Wanda was. But, stories like these are why we, in this day and age, cannot allow our children to even play in their own yard without adult supervision. There was no collective dialogue about pedophiles, no internet, no Amber Alerts, no awareness at all about the depravity that we are unfortunately all to familiar with now.

What is interesting is that "The Alphabet Murders" was a movie made in 1965 (before the murders occurred) and it was based on the 1936 Agatha Christie novel, "The A.B.C. Murders." The victims in the story have double initials and are killed in a place that starts with the same initial. It could be that the Rochester murders were inspired by the book or its film adaptation and Naso's murders were inspired by the Rochester murders. Just a thought.

Having been born in 1954 and raised during the 60's and early 70's I still have a few observations here which are unpleasant at best.. 1) We moved about every three years due to my father's job with Ralston Purina. 2) Sometimes we lived in small towns, other times in large cities. 3) Even though we played all over our neighborhoods in those days my mother always knew where I was. 4) There was a neighborhood "market" in many of the places we lived and where we would occasionally go to as pre-teens and teenagers to pick up an item or two for our mom and maybe get a soda! or some candy. I had several younger siblings and sometimes Mom needed to stay home with them. That being said--- In no way, shape, or form would my mother have allowed me to go the "market" to buy a bunch of groceries that would be difficult for me to carry home. This is simply abdication of parental responsibility. People always make excuses for these incidents that occured back then by saying, "It was a different time." It wasn't a "different time" to still be a responsible parent even if some circumstances were different. However, as you said, the mother had a drinking problem. 5) Sending ANOTHER child to look for a lost one is the stupidest thing I have ever heard and the mother is very much responsible for what happened to her daughter.

It's funny because it's actually *safer* now. But with so many people watching endless news coverage of missing children, we feel less safe. Fewer than 65 kids are kidnapped by strangers a year - your child is more likely to get hit by lightning staying home and playing in the yard. And *way* more likely to be killed in a car accident if you drive her on errands with you. My husband ran errands for his parents much younger than 12. Pizza every Friday night, the bakery every Sunday. This was 1980s NYC and he had to pass "The Maze" where they sold crack and someone was stabbed to death. But they still felt safe because no one targeted kids and it was daylight (and they may have been right). It was such a different mentality.

I'm interested to know if you saw this come up in your research at all if investigators at all referred to the The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie. It's a detective crime novel written back in the 1930's about a serial killer whose victims names had the double initial (Alice Asher, Betty Barnard, Carmichael Clark, etc) and their bodies were left in towns with the same first letter as their name. It sounds like the killer could have potentially been inspired by this....

The strangling from behind and the redressing suggests remorse. It's far more likely that the killer knew Wanda because he treated her body with more care than the other and didn't want to see her eyes as she died - or more likely, let her see him while he was doing it. It's been suggested that the killer worked at school - I would have definitely looked at the janitor or maintenance man, or the like, because of the dirty hands. It actually sounds like whoever it was knew all the girls, but may have had a relationship with Wanda or was fond of her. Michelle's murder is confusing. By the time she was taken, people were aware of what was going on and were scared, yet she apparently went with him willingly. She was strangled from behind and redressed, which shows the same care as Wanda, but you said it looked like she'd been tossed from a moving care - which blows that theory all to hell. Unless he saw a cop up the road or something, and he had to get rid of the body asap, all the respect he'd shown for her ended when he tossed her out like garbage. Carmen was the anomaly. It may have been that she fought him, and he wasn't prepared for that. There wasn't much info on the forensics in your video - probably because it wasn't available - but I'd want a definite forensic link to be 100% sure that Carmen was a victim of the same killer. Also, killers like that don't just stop. My bet is that he continued his spree somewhere else, but different jurisdictions didn't share info back then.

There's actually less crime overall in most places. We just hear about it more. And I guess it's the fact that these parents didn't hear about all the constant crimes that they weren't in a state of constant fear about their children. But some of these were just poor parenting

I really think the last mother was a good parent and it was just a horrific situation. Sometimes, no matter how much you want to protect them- you can’t. Depending on the place, time, maturity of the child you have to start giving them the responsibilities they need to function as adults. Caring for your whole family at 11 like in the second case is certainly not appropriate- but if you live in a safe area and have mature kids and a caring community- having them pop down to the corner store for a few items isn’t unreasonable. It’s all about each personal situation.

Being allowed to walk to and from home by yourself wasn’t uncommon nor is it terrible parenting. In fact, it’s still commonplace in Japan and other countries. Mary Hines something being “normal” doesn’t make it right. Reality is parenting was pretty lazy and shitty those days, especially considering usually the women didn’t even work and could have easily properly supervised their kids. These people lived in suburban America, not in tribes so that analogy is completely irrelevant.

When my mom was growing up in the 80s and 90s she was treated very similarly to those girls, responsible for groceries, going to bars with her mom, and she missed a ton of school because adults in her life were either at work too often to notice or just didn't care. I'm so lucky that things like this didn't happen to her. She did become a victim to different types of abuse at one point and would never ever ever let any of her kids do what she had to do. Kids walking home from school is one thing, especially if the school is close by now that so many people have cell phones. But constantly running errands for your parents and allowing your kids to run on train tracks is awful.

And my grandfather was a PO, AND my great-grandfather was actually a patrolman in Brooklyn, before the NYPD was formed with the 5 boroughs. So He was one of the 1st NYPD officers!! Long history with many Uncles on the force. So, it was very normal to me to hear them talk about bad guys or cases that they were on. As we got older( I'm one of 5 kids) he was more open with stories and things that he saw. I think that's where my love of true crime and mysteries comes from. It's in my blood to be a detective!!

Can you do an episode on the Madness of Two? It's about Swedish twin sisters who were acting strangely, ran out onto the M6 in England, and 1 twin went on to kill a man 2-3 days later. There is also time missing about where they were for awhile. They said Ireland, but there is no evidence of them ever being there. I just want to say, I started by watching you and Derrick, I love you so much I have started with the oldest forward. Well only the crimes, not the beauty's sorry. You have grown so much from the first one to say your latest. I feel your feels as you tell the stories. It's amazing. Just my 2 cents but all props to you!!!

I think also that Carmen was killed by his stepdad (or was it uncle?) and the other two by somebody else, the firefighter is pretty suspicious because of the cat hair and i believe that those girls would have trusted a man in a uniform much easier.. Heart breaking case anyway and so unfair that it has not been solved 😔💔 But I am so glad i found yours channel!! Few days ago subscribed and have been watchinng your videos sence! And sry, english is not my first language so.... 😅 greetings from Finland 🇫🇮😘

I remember when I was a kid people talking about this and not wanting to let kids it off sight. I think it has to be someone they knew because how else did he know the initials? Keep up the awesome shows!! She is so adorable!!!

Thank you. I really do enjoy your delivery style. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it’s as though you were actually there during the the timeline of the event and you present without judging things as you state the case. Although you do provide your positionality and opinion afterwards. Bravo!
