Unstable Unicorns Game REVIEW

The main problem with Unstable Unicorns is that the it’s not a as easy to get into as EK. Not all parties will enjoy the Magic the Gathering (lite) like level of play. EK is almost always an instant hit and is so much easier to pick up, despite being in the same space of card games. However, if you choose your playground, it’s an awesome hit. Specific complaints of mine with the base set is that upgrade and downgrade cards can be game breaking, with very few means of dealing with them. If you don’t have a neigh card, Tiny Stable and Pandamonium ensure you’ll never win if you can’t get that single Chainsaw or Torpedo. I’ve had to grab cards from different expansions just to balance them out. Another complaint is that there are very few means to get baby unicorns involved in the base set featured here. The NSFW version has a lot more ways to play with Baby Unicorns.

You make some very valid points! I agree that Unstable Unicorns is not nearly as accessible to the everyday gamer as Exploding Kittens. It wasn’t until Here To Slay that they created something that was competitive and complex, yet somehow breezy and easy to play. Also, I agree that some of those card scenarios are punishing! There’s definitely an imbalance of power when it comes to the Upgrade/Downgrade abilities. If I had started with Unicorns before Slay, I would be more critical. But Slay being the genius game that it is, it prepared me for the intensity of Unicorns. Lol Take care and thanks for sharing such valuable points!

This has been my favorite game to play with my family at holiday get-togethers... and even then, it turns out we were handling upgrades and downgrades wrong (we thought they were independent from the unicorns, pretty sure we had a limit of two of each oer stable though)

I remember playing this with my Mum, me and her both agreed it was very difficult. So after our first game we packed it away and never touched it again lol

It’s definitely a challenging game! Ironically enough, one of the hardest games I’ve ever had to learn to play was Happy Little Dinosaurs, which was made by the same company that released Unstable Unicorns. Needless to say, they really enjoy difficult gameplay. Lol Take care and thanks for sharing!

Hii, love you're on point reviews، I'd say that the only thing bothering about the game is that unlike here to slay , without the dice, the games might last too long, however it's a must to play, especially to introduce children to card games.

Have you thought of checking out the uk edition of exploding kittens, you'd have to import it but it would be fun to see what you think of it

Someone else mentioned the same idea here recently! Maybe that’s a sign that I’m supposed to do that. It’d be a lot of fun to do a review of that edition, and then do a comparison between the UK and US version. I’ll start shopping around and see what I can find!

Are the 5 kards you Get on the strart going intoo your stable?And do uppgrades and downgradekards do anything when they are on your hand or just in your stable?

Great questions! Once you’ve drawn your cards, you have the option to play a card from your hand into your stable. The Upgrade cards and Downgrade cards have no effect with they’re in your hand. Take care and thanks for commenting!

That IS a hard question! I’d say either Exploding Kittens or Here To Slay are great starting points, because they’re both fun and easy to learn! Unstable Unicorns takes a bit more effort, but it’s also a lot of fun. Take care and I hope this helps!

Upgrade cards and downgrade cards don’t go on a specific unicorn card, they affect the whole stable they are in and affect the whole player, not any one of their cards. Great review!

While both are fantastic, I’d say that Here To Slay is one of the best games I’ve ever played, period. It has everything, plus it plays out quickly. If you’re asking me, Slay is the way. That said, Slay wouldn’t exist without the groundwork laid down by Unicorns, so you can’t go wrong with either one. Hopefully this helps!

Where did you learn that you attach upgrades and downgrades to unicorns? I don’t see anything about that in the rules, it reads like downgrade and upgrade cards function similar to unicorns, they sit in your stable until you can sacrifice or destroy them. I think your explanation creates a lot of issues, like if I steal a unicorn, do I steal its upgrade? What about the upgrade that states your unicorns can’t be destroyed? That would make all downgrades permanent. I’m not trying to be rude, but I’ve played the game once and this seems pretty obvious. Did you play the game?

If you ever played old Yu-Gi-Oh, you'll agree this game is very unbalanced and some combos you can pull are straight up cheating lol That unicorn that basically can't be destroyed and gives you a Neigh card every time it's removed from the field, mixed with cards that require a sacrifice to remove cards or negate effects is too busted since you're cleaning your opponent's field while stacking cards that don't allow them to play, basically the old Yata-lock but with horses. Every time we play this game and that unicorn appears, we know the game is over, and sure enough, whoever has it wins

Haha! As a former Yu-Gi-Oh player myself, I totally agree with you! I love Unicorns, but it has some op cards and combos for sure.
