You can increase your lands by increasing your centralization. You can also find out how many troops, gold, and other things people have by checking out their character sheets. For income just hover over their gold and it will tell you how much they make per month. It's the same with piety/prestige.

I tried to do this, starting from Mumu in 1066. I got a decent way there, ruling Ireland and Scotland, but I hit 1453.

Paradox games are like that for many people. There's a lot of complexity, and I lot to learn. It doesn't take too much to learn the basics, enough to be able to play the game; but it does take a long time to master them. Every time you play, you can discover something new.
