Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Praggnanandhaa and Wesley So play from the San Francisco Ferry Building as the 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour season ends with the Finals from November 14-20. They’re joined on the chess24 Playzone by Arjun Erigaisi, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Liem Le as the 8 players compete for $210,000 in a 7-round all-play-all event. Each match consists of 4 rapid games, with $7,500 for a winner in rapid chess.
If a match is tied 2:2, two blitz games are played followed, if needed, by Armageddon. A tiebreak winner earns $5,000 and the loser $2,500. The time control for each rapid game is 15 minutes, with a 10-second increment from move 1. The blitz tiebreak games are 5+3, while for Armageddon White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Duda said that he was considering giving mate by knight (... 33.Re5+ Kf7 34.Re7+ Kg8 35.Rg7+ Kh8 36.Rh7+ Kg8 37.Nh6#), because it's somehow better to mate by knight than rook. So yes, he calculated whole sequence :D

He said in interview that he spotted it pretty quickly, but he had to check it for 1000 times not to blunder. What's even more interesting, he said that after Re7+ Kg8 he would continue with Rg7+ Kh8 Rh7+ Kg8 Nh6# just to mate with the Knight because in his opinion it's even more beautiful.

Duda looks like he's going to join the 2800 club real soon. You know it's funny, they're not any better than they were decades ago. But with all the tournaments they can play now it's far easier to raise your Fide rating if you're a top player. Think about it, Bobby Fisher was the first to 2700 in 1972! It took 17 years for Kasparov to become the first to 2800 in 1999! Now there are 14 Grand Masters, 12 of which are active that have, at one time in their career, broken 2800 and all but Kasparaov have only done so since 2011!
