The first subject of this instalment is Daniel Vierge, and he should have featured prominently in the recent Don Quixote video. But I failed to find good enough resolution images and had to leave him out. Only now do I stumble on a series of perfectly acceptable examples.
It's not the first time this has happened and it's immensely frustrating, but better late than never I suppose.
Joining him are Albert Guillaume, Gwynned M. Hudson and Rube Goldberg. Another very mixed bag.
And as promised here's the update to the list/archive of illustrators.
51 Louis Moe, Charles Dana Gibson, Frank Reynolds, Clara Elsene peck
52 Hermann Paul, Fanny Young Cory, Lawrence Sterne Stevens, Lois lenski
53 Emil Reinicke, Florence Harrison, Andrew Loomis, Arnrid Johnston

Daniel Vierge was truly dedicated to his craft not only him aimed at upgrading the printing process but just like Harold Earnshaw didn't let the fact that he lost the mobility of his dominant hand stopped him from creating art. I must say that I also feel identificated with Rube Goldberg struggles with his father.

Many decades ago I discovered a book at the library on pen techniques which featured some of Vierge's work. I must have checked it out 100 times over the next several years. In recent years I've struggled to dig up more information on him, and am very much delighted to see your fine showcase of this true illustrative pioneer. I had never known of the personal obstacles he contended with, and this truly adds context and poignancy to his superb contributions. All those of us who love the nuances of such crucial biographical minutiae are indebted to you for the fine research you bring to these offerings sir.

Another wonderful instalment, Mr Beard. Thank you. Impossible finding out details about Gwynedd Hudson. Her Alice in Wonderland was reprinted many times and the 1932 edition was stamped with a roundel on the front board and the title page Centenary Edition (of Carroll's birth) with the March Hare at its centre. There was no Through the Looking Glass - the common case; few artists illustrated BOTH Alice books. The 1922 edition omits an 'r' in Carroll on the title page. Tittered at what you said about Poor Max Goldberg forcing an engineering degree on young Reuben Lucius. So funny. Like any good father he wanted the best for his boy. He was HUGELY proud of Rube when his art and cartoon work were recognised.

Goldberg was a constant figure in the newspapers and magazines during my squandered youth, it is nice to see him praised and appreciated. And Hudson's Alice illustrations were absolutely the best, she owed a debt to no one.

As always, it makes my day when these pop up in my music dominated KZbin menu! The Vierge early work seemed strongly influenced by Piranesi and Doré but those later ones in his new process are beautiful. One often pauses to think just how much artists' working with chemical processes damages their health.

It often seems that artists who develop new techniques in various ways use them more imaginatively than those who follow. But perhaps that is because they are in the final stages of experimenting, with all the concentrated energy that implies. Possibly I feel that with Vierge's late prints. But it could just as well be my lack of knowledge about subsequent works. It was certainly so that my first ventures into new techniques were usually better than subsequent uses. But I'm afraid I don't really have many comparisons with others'! Worse still, I gave up!

Pete, ya' welcome. Thanks to your previous mention of Suzanne Meunier I'd would'n't have come across Barbe. After viewing the video again could make a list of interesting observations, to me anyway. 10:27 Goldberg as a precursor to Robert Crumb poking his head out from the curtain asking a question to an early version of Mr. Natural paving the sidewalk with potatoe salad. 2:36 Rooster/hen is really well drawn. Decent of you to mention Vierge developing photo-engaving. And the list goes on and on. Appreciate all I have learned from your videos.

@@petebeard I have always had a violent aversion to tobacco smoke, and my father was a three-pack-a-day man. Constantly shifting position to stand upwind of him was the least of my worries! Never been much of a drinker either, although that is purely a matter of preference. I did sample some of the rides in the 60s, but never lived in -- or for-- the amusement park. Nevertheless, I say -- MAKE IT! Although I cannot guarantee that a platform that goes so far as to ban personal testimonies from people who regret their sex-change operations as "hate speech" will leave it up!

CRAZY inspiring! A rerun I love watching! Are you aware of Frank Frazetta and his stroke that led him to relearn illustration/painting with his left arm? Your presentations here are one of the best surprises for me! Tnx!

Hello again and yes I'm a big admirer of Frazetta's work - although it was only quite recently when I found out about his stroke. I'm pretty sure I'd have just thrown in the towel.

Vierge's inkworks are so incredible. I'll take later for sure! Do you have any idea the paper dimensions he worked with? Were these quite large iow? The detail is astonishing. Hudson is just a delight. I'm wondering if there's a connection to Goldberg's artworks and the first Mario Bros games? I see one! And thanks for archive, I've yet to get started but this is the push now to add a couple artworks to my favs in these videos. Thank you again!

Hello again, and thanks for watching as usual. Regarding your questions I don't know for sure but because of his freedom from having to be manually engraved I think it would have dawned on him he could now draw his images bigger and have them reduced to print size photographically. And I don't know if it started with him but those who came a little later generally worked between 150 to 200 % bigger so the image would 'tighten up' in print. Sorry thats a bit inconclusive. And I can be even less help regarding the Goldberg/Mario connection. I know what the latter looks like but I've never seen any of the games.

Funny indeed to think of Rube Goldberg as unsung. As a kid (some decades ago), I loved to look at the ‘machine’ strips in collection form at the public library. But I’m an American - and know nothing of Heath Robinson, as you might expect. You teach me that there’s a lot I still don’t know about Goldberg’s extraordinary life and body of work, moreover. Thanks!

Hi Pete, Gwynedd Hudson is a new discovery, love her work. I don't know if you do requests, but I'm trying to find some biographical information on William Bolin, the Art Deco illustrator for 1920s Vogue magazine. He seems to be completely absent from the internet. I don't think you've covered him yet, but his work is amazing - a slightly more representational Erté. If ever there was someone to ask, it's you! Thanks again.

Hello and thanks for the comment. And thanks for the name William Bolin - not a name I was familiar with although I recognise some of the Vogue covers. Sadly I cant be of much (any) help. I did find out he was really Guillermo Bolin and Spanish by birth. But that's all I got. Even the Spanish national library have nothing on him. Great pity.

I've started to see a theme to your video, you like to start with mounted horse in the left corner. This I suppose is to be expected, given the nature of art, much before the invention of the car. Would it be possible to do theme on the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H G Wells?

Hello and thanks for the comment as usual. Actually the thumbnail idea started with the very first instalment which was a heroic figure on horesback by Willy Pogany. And I just decided to play a game with myself to see how long I could keep it going. Thanks also for the suggested topic and I have covered illustrators who created images for both these writers along the way. Whether I could make a whole video would depend on how much written and visual material I could find. I suspect not enough but I'll have a rummage.

One of my classmates in college wanted to be an illusrator. She did adouble major in art & English. For all her literature classes she did a portfolio for the novels, stories, poems, etc. I don't lnow what she did after college.

Hello and thanks for the comment. I'm not trying to avoid responsibility but I've checked them and they all seem fine to me. The earlier videos were not in HD but I don't know which ones youve been watching. I've also asked a few acquaintances to do similar and they report no problem. I do know this has happened occasionally when watching youtube so I suspect Its some glitch in the system. But if it was my doing believe me I'd fix it.

One wonders about Daniel Vierge's recovery and learning to draw with his left hand. I think you reported something similar for another artist in one of your Unsung Heroes - although I can't remember who. I know that most of the illustrators that I have hired over the years have been left-handed and that there has been a strong bias against the sinister in years past and I wonder if these artists who recovered from strokes/other maladies and learned to draw with their left hands weren't naturally left-handed and had been forced into right-handedness. Just woolgathering, but do you know of any left-handed artists that were forced to learn to draw with their right hands?
@petebeard
@petebeard 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and that's an interesting point, but not one I can shed much light light on. The other illustrator was Harold Earnshaw and I wouldn't have thought denying someone their natural left handedness was that common in Britain when he was growing up, but who knows. What I can say with authority is that about 10 years ago I taught a student from (I think) Angola who had had his right hand severed some 4 years earlier and he had been right handed. And by the time I taught him he was visually fluent with his left. Amazing.
@davewalter1216
@davewalter1216 2 жыл бұрын
@@petebeard Thanks - your Angolan student is good enough to falsify my hypothesis. I'm not even sure how valid the idea that left-handed people are more artistic may be, but I was struck by how many of my students who are excellent illustrators are left-handed.

Hello and thanks for the suggestions. Funnily enough it was only a couple of weeks ago that another viewer suggested P C Smith. I had never heard of her and she is now on the list. As a late arrival it may be a while before she appears but sometimes I shuffle them around in the queue so it might be sooner rather than later. And regarding Blake he was so overwhelmingly an artist rather than an illustrator that I reluctantly decided he's not a subject for this channel. Sorry if this sounds petty but I feel the need to stay on topic if I can.

Question Mr. Beard, As illustrators, would they been responsible for Lettering and Signage?
@petebeard
@petebeard 9 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for the question. In the time frame of most of the featured illustrators and poster artists in this series the answer is almost invariably that they created the lettering as an integral part of the design. This practice was widespread from the Art Nouveau poster artists such as Cheret and Mucha onward. It's only from the later 20th century onward that this generally ceased to be the case - and to my way of thinking it was not a good development.

Hello and thanks for the comment and suggestions. I'm particularly grateful for the name Bruce McCall as I hadn't previously encountered his marvellous work. The bad news is that neither of these illustrators is eligible for the unsung series as they were unfortunately born too late to qualify. My cutoff D.O.B is 1910, and although this may seem arbitrary I had to stop somewhere to retain my sanity. As it is I've still got more to feature than have already appeared. But havng said that is more than possible that down the line I will find a reason to feature both in some other context. They are both deserving of wider attention.

I'm a great fan of your series and have watched all of them to date, but please don't show the illustrations as a small part of the screen when you can make them larger. Even on a tablet, the effect is that less detail is visible - let alone a phone.

Hello and thanks for the comment. I'm afraid I can't control what people watch the videos on, but I have to assume that in the vast majority of cases it's on at the very least a laptop of a reasonable size, and I have to leave room for the subtitles too. Sorry I can't fulfil your request, and I hope it doesn't put you off watching. I need the views...
