I had some mental health issues as an early teen. To this day, I'm convinced that the only reason I've been able to live a somewhat normal life with healthy experiences is because I managed to stay out of the mental health system and/or jail.

I've watched most of your videos, and you've been a real inspiration for me. I came across your channel when we were doing the mental health part of our training. I graduated nursing school on Monday. I've been a Patient Care Technician at our local psych hospital on the Dual Diagnosis Unit since June. Now, I'm pursuing a position as a Psych RN. I really love psych nursing, and it's all because I stumbled upon your channel, so thank you.

If I had patients the like of those being told they were now a man after killing someone,I would want to stay safe too.More importantly why do we have nurses dealing with troubled youth?Even if" they are NOT just no good"(West Side Story)this certainly does not come under the domain of health workers.

How often did you go on the floor to interact with the kids? I worked at a tech with the adolescents and the nurses NEVER were out on the floor. The only time they came out was to watch a restraint to count it and make sure the staff were doing it right. I acutally i called and I asked for help cause the kids were going crazy and the nurse got mad and asked why I called ? Wtf i was bymself in the dayroom while they were all throwing things at each other and fighting each other. I never want to be like those nurses i am going to go out on the floor and help as much as I can. Thank you for caring and going out on the floor. Like i dont understand i know those nurses are not charting the entire time in the nurse station. Also are staff to pt ratio was 1:6, but someone how i ended up bymyself with like 10 kids. I think the facility that you were on was safer.

daaaaaaamn that sounds crazy! Yeah I would pretty much always go out and interact w/ the kids, or at least sit in the day hall. how old were the kiddos?

@A_Psych_Nurse the facility had kids from 7 to 17 years old. They put the 7 to 12 year old boys on a separate unit. I think they tested staff by putting them on that unit to see if they could handle them lol 😆

With all due respect, can you share the racial/ethnic makeup of the staff and the kids? You appear to be a real standup guy. I respect that.

i'd say staff = 50% white, 50% hispanic. Kids = 1/3 white/black/hispanic is my guess. not really sure cultural backgrounds though of anyone. thx for commenting :)
