Unused/Beta Mission Mode found in Mario Kart Wii!!

What a find! This stuff probably hasn't been seen in at least ten years.
So, this is some cut or beta content from Mario Kart Wii - originally there was a Mission Mode planned for the game, and for the first time, the interfaces for it have been found and shown in all their slightly incomplete glory!
For those who don't know what Mission Mode is, it was present in Mario Kart DS. It was a series of challenges that saw you doing things like racing through gates, beating boss racers, and things like that. Competition/Tournament mode was the spiritual successor to it.
So, you may be wondering, how has nobody found this before now? The reason all this took so long to find is just because the game doesn't try to load these screens at all, ever, even on the menus that would once upon a time have contained them. So in order to get at them, you'd have to convince the game it was supposed to load them first, which I did, and then politely asking them to render actually works! Moreover, these screens change the game state into an unused mode, similar yet different to that of Competition and Tournaments, revealing a bunch of features that were once part of Mario Kart DS, hiding away in the depths of Mario Kart Wii's code.
The menus for Mission Mode have no available text, but the game is trying to load them; they've simply been erased. Similarly, a massive file that would've contained mission parameters is not present, and without it, the mode can't start - UNLESS you simulate its existence, which is what I did. It attempts to load files out of the /Race/MissionRun folder on the disc, but that folder is empty, but that affects nothing since that folder would only have contained extra data (like where to place goombas or similar). As such, I was actually able to play a few games with the game in Misson state, and show off some of the game modes.
The game modes include:
- Get miniturbos to score points
- Get item boxes to score points
- Kill enemies to score points
- Wheelie to score points
- Drift (not miniturbo) to score points (not shown here)
- Kill topmen to score points
- Gather coins (not shown here)
- Pass through gates (not shown here)
- Complete 3 laps within time limit (not shown here, seems to be two modes like this)
- Hit other players to score (not shown here)
- Boost start to win (???) (not shown here)
- Slipstream other racers to get points! (Also not shown here)
- A mode that seems to do nothing. Nothing in the game looks for this mode, it seems. Probably removed. (not shown here)

That's all 14 of the valid modes of play! I have also now confirmed adding SZS files to MissionRun under the right names does yield very good results, and allows many tournaments to be played as standalone missions. They're pretty good for testing, given they're very similar in format!
So, I hope you enjoy the video and find it as interesting as I found discovering it was! I will be doing more research into this mode and what other things may be hidden away in it. And indeed what other things might be hiding in Mario Kart Wii itself. If we can find something like this after 10 years, what else might still be out there?

I'm still doing research on the mode, I've learned several things and managed to map missions to buttons properly. I also filled in some of the missing text, though some things don't work quite right yet. Oh wow, this is just the sort of thing that could make a Mario Kart Wii mod so much more unique and make me check one besides custom tracks (and where that online-only ring level would fit). I'd really love to try and see what they programmed for these modes, even if the objectives are gone I'd be fine with a retread of Mario Kart DS ones. Did you fix the buggy dark text palette or the weird texture stretching on those buttons?

Oh my god this is one of the things I've been praying for in MKWii since the beginning of CTGP :D I would love for Grand Prix mode to be replaced by this using the online competitions from the MKWii Channel, as well as custom-made ones. Maybe there could even be leaderboards for them on the CTGPR Channel? HYPE :D

All right, here goes: this might not be possible to do at all, but if it is indeed possible to add content with specific unused values so that you can rewire these buttons and create a single-player mission mode, replaceable by battle mode in CTGP-R options? You would have these buttons in the game, but add text to it, create szs files for missions, and wire up those buttons to go to that image. It sounds far-fetched, but if this IS possible we could have something interesting for a future update. Just a thought.

interesting, i just got ctgp and i kinda wanna see missions, but then again there's already custom tracks and these missions just sound like another custom track to add to ctgp because of designs and stuff if it can work. so if this does work it probably wouldn't be added anywhere and would just be a gecko code :/

Good point, but honestly the miniturbo mission could bring karts into the scene, and I don't think a custom track has been able to do that. There are more examples I could give.

WiiLord95 something nintendo could do is disguise a file, like changing the file extension so it is unreadable unless it is put back to the right file, like renaming a .txt to a .png file. It wont appear in a photo viewer but if you change it back to txt it works in a text viewer. Im not being specific with app names because there's lots of them.

At first, the options to play were complicated for me a little just because they were blank and later filled with numbers, but when I saw the missions, I was so shocked and surprised and can't believe it's still in this game. I never even know the spiky topman was a boss in the game in online tournament.

I'm guessing that elements from the scrapped mission mode was later used in online tournaments in the final version. I have seen videos where people had made custom online tournaments on wiimifi using these elements.

Perhaps this was some sort of tutorial mode disguised as mission mode, one that taught you the different mechanics of MKWii, such as manual and automatic drifting, bikes vs karts, wheelies, killing goombas, and possibly the uses of different items.

In Mario Kart DS each Mission Level has a boss at the end of it. Considering they probably only got to around half way through the 2nd Mission Level, it seems quite likely that Topman was going to be the boss for the first Mission Level, and ended up being reused for Competitions. EDIT: Especially so, considering the file name of the track that plays in Galaxy Arena is named "n_BossMi_32".

I played the stage with the topman. You had to download a Wii channel and you played with other players in a tournament. The stage was called Galaxy Arena

People that I've talked to think that this is fake due to how long it took to find this, but they fail to realize that it took until 2012 to find the ZX Spectrum games in Golden Eye 007 on N64 and that game has been datamined to death

amazing find! when i bought mkwii i was sure there had to be a mission mode, that was one of the fun things about mkds! great to know it was meant to be in mkwii before they discontinued working on it. And amazing to see there is still something left, although i think what is left is just a beta screen, something they worked on really quickly to test the mode out. It's likely they first made the menu, because there are menu buttons for level 1 to 8, and then worked on the levels and what not. Seeying that only levels 1-1 to 2-4 have restrictions, i am assuming they only worked on those levels.they decided that they didn't like the mode and later on removed the link to mission mode, deleting the text and the levels they created, leaving only the mission modes screen behind it. They probably thought this was never going to be found. to be honest it would have been cool if they left everything they have worked on misson mode on the mkwii disc, so we could see a little bit more. But i am sure we could put this menu into use!

Fundamentally, while the scenarios no longer exist, the code that runs them does. And that means we can try out what the game was capable of doing, even if we don't know quite what Nintendo would have done with it themselves. And that's pretty neat in itself!
