I retired from Norfolk Southern Railway in 2020 after a 41 year career as a certified welder in the mechanical department. When I hit the 40 year mark, they handed me a cheap Chinese pocket watch complete with a large sticker on the front that verified “made in China”. No pomp and circumstance, just a dollar store watch ! On my last day of work, the division manager slid his office window open that overlooked the shop from the second story, yelled my name, and said “thanks”, and shut the window! I had been their “go to” guy for many years, and was on very good terms with management. I’d hate to see what the slackers get when they leave!

Tom- The best years of our life are spent at our jobs, the only reward we seek is recognition for our years of service so we don’t carry that bad taste in our mouth for the remainder of our lives. Some companies just don’t get that. Thanks…

That's really sad, Tom. I would have thrown that watch in the nearest trash can right then and there. As far as the slacker employee....probably get the exact same treatment. I've seen it first hand ☹

For Christmas one year our company gave us those cheap flashlights harbor freight gives away. Most guys just threw them away. Most people who retire at our company don't even make till the end, they will come out and send them home so they won't steal 😕. But often we will go out after work and give them a proper send off

Yeah, all these companies are Jackoff Smirnoffs nowadays. But I guess since they don’t take pride in THEIR “work,” somebody has to right? Might as well be the guys doing the actual work. I’ve had enough of asshat companies and d*ck bosses to last me the rest of my days! Precisely the reason I’m trying to start my own business. I figure if I have to work for a d*ck, I might as well work for myself, and if I’m gonna let a d*ck boss me around, it might as well be my own! Lol. Wishing you a peaceful and relaxing retirement. Sounds like you’ve earned it bud.

Wow, that hot wax did the trick. It amazes me that they made those leather handles....in a 1,000 years i would never think that leather would work so well or look so nice. Great stuff. Cheers

Yeah, they are beautiful. I think they started using them on knives first (like the WW2 era Ka-Bars) so it makes sense applying it to hammers and axes too. I reach for the old leather handled ones over old wood or the newer rubber handles any day. They look better, feel better, and hold up better too. They just don’t make em like they used to, that’s for sure.

Retirement....... Ah what a feeling. I got asked to stay on but I said two open heart surgeries and I'm pushing it just sitting here. My son worked for the same company. We both wrote work instructions and quality procedures. Good place to work and he did a great job. Just before I retired, he got laid off. Right after I retired, he got rehired. Sometimes it just works out right. 😁😆

You need to write a book. Not how to restore a hammer or pliers but how to restore metal, wood, plastic or leather. Use some photos of projects like this one for leather talking about the soft wax before switching to a harder wax and don't forget the heat. I would buy that in a heart beat.

Doing a varnish dip would have taken 5 minutes, but you ended up with a far superior finish in 4 hours. Well worth it. I like that it can be maintained in the future without having to sand down and refinish the entire handle. Very smart.

I was going to say, you used to get tokens of appreciation from your employer. I collect vintage wristwatches as well. I love the engraved ones commending employees for their service. Like a gorgeous Hamilton watch for 10 years of service. My dad worked somewhere for 25 years and all he got was a plastic clock made in China.

That leather turned out nice. You know it has been a long time since I heard of a company doing anything for a guy retiring. Sometimes a foreman would kick in but mostly it was coworkers. We chipped in for the cake and gifts. I do remember some of the old timers hating the supervisors coming out for cake. Can't blame them, they always showed up for credit.

You crack me up with your file reference, we have an expression here in the uk - built like a "brick sh*t house" (💩) this is how my "kids" describe me and we are of a similar stature ! 😉😁 That hammer to me represents what you espouse, first you understatedly demonstrate great skill in refining the steel of an uncompromising forging with a flap disk and basic sander, and then you demonstrate a superior yet accessible finish to the leather that can easily be maintained over time - awesome, thanks for this as always ! Also, the flag is looking great, softening up nicely, and fluttering beautifully, takes me back to my scouting days !

Beautiful work on the hammer, and the leather just gives it a special look; any tool with a handle like that says “we cared enough to make it something special”. And for Tom and other subscribers who’ve toiled for years at jobs they may or may not have enjoyed, take heart in knowing you did them maybe where others would not and developed a sense of pride in work well done. These are rare traits in todays workforce where there is little to no loyalty for the employer, or any semblance of work ethic once employed. No mystery at all why folks flock here in search of something better.

I retired after 35 years on the railroad. They traditionally gave you a gold watch and threw a feed. I got a golf towel, a stainless coffee mug and was shown the door. There too I had to turn in my ID and switch keys. As I passed the dumpster I tossed the mug and towel. Shows you how they appreciated an employee that never was injured on the job. But management retirees got the gold watch, big banquet, and the works.

Hi John, you are a hoot with your “Flat Bastard” file. Boy that pizza looked so good. Nothing beats NY pizza. Ya, I’ve twisted a few blades in my time too. Just like you when I saw 357’s video I knew how it got bent. Very nice hammer refurb. I especially liked your leather handle treatment. I have an original WWII or maybe Korean War M1Carbine bayonet with a leather handle. I’m going to try your treatment. The knife is in super condition with the exception of the handle. Thanks for another great mid-week video. See you on Friday. John

I have used a wrench on a square shank screwdriver for some stubborn screws. I do not recall twisting the blade, but I can imagine how easy this can happen. The hammer looks terrific. Another benefit of the wax is being able to easily re-apply if the leather gets dried out over time. Well done. Dave.

That hammer is beautiful. It never looked so good. At first I thought it was an Estwing. I have a number of Estwing tools and like them. They are also nicely finished, and when i saw the forge mark on the hammer head, i wondered if it wasn't an Estwing. Also, the end cap on your hammer, although it looks the same with the double rivets,, looks poorly done or may have been damaged over time. What I dont care for on the leather disc handles is the coating. It tends to crack and chip Your wax treatment is better and looks great. I guess it's just cheaper and faster to dip the handle in some kind of coating rather than take more time to do your better wax process. Thanks.

Hammer turned out great! I have a Malco, Minn Mn stamped hammer, a little older than yours, when the metal was painted a verdigris color. This was before Malco had them highly buffed and nicely finished. How about doing a stacked leather repair project? Maybe a repair for just segments missing (if possible) and then a different project to completely restack and finish the leather. I have an Estwing hatchet and this Malco, both with leather segments missing and damaged. Thanks for the entertainment. Keep it up man!

My dad retired in1984 after 43 years with the same company, they counted his time in the Army Air Corp as part of his length of service with the company. I don’t remember whether he got a retirement diner or party. That company had a monthly employee newsletter, a park like area where employees could eat during the warmer months. This area had horse shoe pits and bocci courts and the company ran horse shoe and bocci leagues in the summer. The company also had its own bowling league. An Old Timers diner was held every year where milestone years of service were recognized. I know he got a nice watch for 40 years and I think he got a tie clip for 30. After all, back in 1971 men still wore suits and ties if they had any sort of desk job, and probably wore a tie when they went to church.

I worked HVAC back in the 90's and I had that same Malco hammer. I lost it on a job, then went back to the same house a year later and when we cut open the ductwork above the furnace, I found my hammer on top of the heat exchanger. All of the leather rings on the handle had dried up, cracked to pieces, and fell off. About the same time, I lost the hammer I had bought to replace it, and I refused to buy a 3rd hammer. I built up a new "handle" with electrical tape (probably 2 rolls worth) then Plasti-Dipped it. I used it everyday for a few more years before leaving the industry. I still have the hammer and handle looks like it did 25 years ago, just a bit dirtier!

Hi Scout, I’ve done quite a number of leather handled hammers and that one has all the hallmarks of an Estwing. The double rivets on the bottom, the shape of the leather handle, the facets on the shaft. I’ll bet if you compare the bottom plate it’ll be an exact match to an Estwing. I remember you telling me that Estwing also made hammers for True Temper and I found they were identical except: the brand name stamped in the head, the bottom plate not being stamped but was an exact match and there was no date stamped on the shaft under the leather like all the Estwings have. Great video as always. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Love the stacked leather handles. Don't own any. Just a bit more than I can usually afford. 😁😎

It came out so nice! I’m glad the buffing wheels came in useful! What’s the difference between that hammer and a rock hammer?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 2 жыл бұрын
Joe- The rock hammer usually comes to a point in the rear, a mason’s hammer has a similar back but longer. Very subtle differences. 😃👍

Sweeet job on the hammer. Heating the wax finish was over the top. Some companies really know how to treat their employees well. Apparently MTA didn't like to tale care of their employees. Jim

I twisted a square shank Craftsman screwdriver but it was the shirt pocket model and I was probably much stronger then. Been working on restoring some vintage tools and making aluminum ferrules out of swiffer sweeper bent section and the thicker ones from a bicycle handlebar. Gave me a chance to use my dad's Type A Nicholson file meant just for aluminum. Been filing a double spokeshave with my Nicholoson single cut smoothing file as it is such a joy to use! What does it mean when you get sparks doing a wirebrushing? It's a 1/3 hp 1725rpm packard motor, a division of GM and Made in the USA. I have it mounted currently with a cheap 8 inch HF wire brush. It is mounted on a homemade swivel I made that swivels out from below my sink so I could sharpen knives on it, mostly.

Sparks could be an indicator of the primary centrifugal switch hanging up. Sometimes a good cleaning gets rid of common problems. 😃👍

Are the sparks from the motor or are they from the wire wheel?

I retired in 2021 with 30 years of service as a utility worker. i also worked another 17 years elsewhere making my entire working career 47 years. When I retired after 30 years, I had no party due to COVID, however. I did receive a used office chair. As they say, "it's the thought that counts." LOL

Nice, yeah it’s a Malco setting hammer. Those letters on the bottom at one time should’ve read “Annandale MN,” where they were manufactured. I have an old no name (none that I can see anyway) leather stacked claw hammer I’ve been meaning to restore one of these days. Guess I’ll have to dig it out and “hammer” away at it, and strike while the iron is hot, so to speak. Sorry, I’ll see myself out lol

I have my great grandpas #105 Reed vise patent date December 24, 1912 and was taken care of. I took it apart and cleaned it wire wheel and it's perfect.I'd like to keep it bare metal but you can just about see the flash rust starting. Do you have any ideas of what to put on it?
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Unfortunately that flash rust is relentless. If you steel wool your vise and remove the flash, wipe the vise down with denatured alcohol the you can shellac the vise. It goes on easy and lasts! 😃👍
