I ran 2:39:32 (6:05 average mile pace) at the 2011 Philadelphia Marathon. This was a 5+ minute PR from my previous 2:44 personal best and represented a comeback from a major injury more than 3 years later.
In this video, you'll learn the high level training strategies that allowed me to run my fastest marathon ever.

Super helpful reminder that it's okay to not feel good during training sessions! Especially at peak volume, you're supposed to endure a reasonable level of fatigue to optimize training adaptation. Thanks for boosting my mental game during this block!

Man, right on time. My Seville marathon is in 2 weeks and felt sluggish until last Sunday (first down week of taper) in which I did a pretty similar workout: 4x3 miles at MP with 1k float in a hilly course and simple nailed it! Confidence booster as you said. Don't lose the grit😅

I had been on track for a Sub3 hour marathon (in my mid 40s) and picked up a stress fracture in my tibia (along with glut tendinopathy). Note - don't add in external weighted training late in your training cycle - wait until the whole race is done. Also, prioritize sleeping big time! My nutrition was great, hydration good, training plan reasonable, training history good, and no real injury history. Major mistake - lifting weights late in my training cycle AND not prioritizing sleep. I did a long run on less than 7 hours of quality sleep and it wrecked me.

There’s a half marathon about a month before my marathon that is pretty much just the second half of the marathon course I’m going to run. Is that too close to the marathon though to give a “race effort”? I was planning on running it more as a workout. Would love to know your thoughts!

Quick question. I’ve got a marathon on April 14th , Half marathon tune up on March 3rd. Am I best off attacking the Half for a PR or using it as a Marathon Pace effort race simulator? Cheers

can we get benefits with only running in zone 1 instead of zone 2 only running with zone 1 very low heart rate

You’ll get some endurance benefits from the time on your feet but you won’t get any faster without speed work

All zones, done at the right time, at the right zones. Stop looking for "the answer" - there is no single zone that is best. Best for what?

@JasonFitzgerald yeah I guess so. But I wonder if I would find my true potential if just doing 80k per week. I find that I always get injured from the long runs (eg 30km / 20 miles)

I’ve found splitting my runs in the treadmill has allowed me to get in a lot more volume and increase my fitness than when I used to only road run. Treadmill has a softer surface so less impact on bones
