Kind of sad to see 3985 in such a state. A big contrast to when she was thundering around that same curve unassisted with a 143-car freight. Hopefully the folks at Silvis get her fixed up and running as she should.

I assume she’s in much better shape than most steamers. She just doesn’t have her jacketing on which makes her look all rusty but it actually prevents rust by having it off during storage. Also the tender appears to be 4014’s which was never restored.

One never knows, UP might allow 3985 on their tracks to pay a "homecoming visit", if they get it restored successfully. A meet-UP (get the pun?) might also be possible. Don't rule out a Challenger-Big Boy doubleheader just yet!

UP 6936 deserves a mention. Largest diesel electric loco ever built, an DDA40X if a remember. Several were built. Currently 6936 is being refurbished and did a test run as recently as Sept 2023.

She hadn’t been out since being a stationary boiler and being used in the Giants of steam documentaries. After that she’s been in the Roundhouse in the heritage section of Union Pacific‘s main yard in Cheyenne for so long and now she’s getting a chance to shine again when she’s ready to go

Thanks for the great video. I still can't believe the UP didn't put a clean diesel on the point. They had to realize this would be the most photographed train since 4014 came out. The 5716 looks absolutely terrible pulling this train.

From what I understand, 6936 was never given PTC, which would therefore prevent it from leading the train. As for 5716, it was probably the best option (if not the only option) available for the UP, since hauling two locomotives would probably require more power than hauling just one.

Glad to see that UP engines 3985,5511 and 6936 are moving to a new home in Illinois ; I would really like to see 3985 and 6936 return to operation but maintenance needs to be performed and that takes a while. I am glad that there are plenty of videos of both 3985 and 6936 in operation from decades ago to be enjoyed in the current time period though.

A very interesting video, I hope that the 3985 will be on steam again. This loco was in service until the Bigboy 4014 was deployed, it was the backbone of the UP's steam operation. Very nice and sad video.

That what the donation was for. To get her repaired and in running shape. UP has its hands full with 4014 and Dayliner. Made donations to other Railroading Musuems to effect repairs and get them running. They all are repairable but need TLC with UP doesn't have enough of

Could be wrong, but I believe this is the first time since 1958 that 5511 has been on the mainline. It was last seen on the mainline in 1958 or 1959 when filming "Last of the Giants" although it wasn't actually functioning. They burned tires in the firebox and pushed it from behind with a diesel.

Yeah, I imagine that the UP management didn't want to spend the millions' to rebuild her. Not after they already spent huge money on the Big Boy rebuild. Although, its still good to see that she will be rebuilt, and not allowed to simply rust away.

There is a good chance some of that equipment had journal bearings on their trucks. Class 1 railroads no longer accept that kind of equipment, so I wonder what kind of paperwork they had to file to get an exception?

as a "special equipment" move, it up the car inspectors on each railroad to decide to accept the equipment on their tracks, and special instructions of how it moves on their track ie, speeds, routes, inspections en route......

The CNW f unit will go to Boone & Scenic Valley RR in Iowa, while all of the other heritage equipment will be at Silvis, IL. RRHMA will be doing the restoration work for the equipment in Illinois.

6936 is NOT operational. The two diesel engines doing the work on this run are also DPU-equipped. While they could have waited, it was a necessary decision to utilize these two to make the trip on time.

I have multiple questions #1. I noticed the crew was riding in the 5511 cab and not 3985 how come #2 Do ya thing 5511 and 3985 will double head together? #3. Will UP let them run on their tracks again? Or Double head with 4014? #4 which do you look more forward to see restored, 5511 or 3985? Sorry for all the questions just my curiosity is getting me

1. 5511 has friction bearings that forces the engine to run at slow speeds. They’re probably just staying there just in case. 3985 doesn’t have those bearings. 2. I anticipate a double header between the two. 3. It depends. Both are being rebuilt to UP specs, but since UP doesn’t allow steam engines not owned by them, I’m not sure how this will play out. 4. I’m looking forward to seeing both!

No. UP is still running their steam program. It’s just not feasible to have UP operate and maintain 4 big steam locomotives. UP will still operate Big Boy 4014 and FEF 844.

I think I like 4014 better than 3985 because it is bigger and faster (80 MPH). The 3985 on the other hand is smaller and slower (70 MPH). Anyone agree?

No. Challengers were more versatile, and there are stories that they could've gone 90MPH with sufficient maintenance and a brave enough engineer.

There is not really a max speed on a steam locomotive, Really depends on engineer and fireman. That being said there are plenty of videos of challengers going over 70 so that is definitely not the top speed.

Kinda pathetic the way they treated 3985, like a red headed step child. I think she is a nicer locomotive than the 4014 myself but what do I know, I’m just a Pennsylvania Railroad fan. Glad to see someone will give her the love and attention she deserves.

i agree its sucks, but from what i researched, the UP steam team or the program all together, Couldn't handle 3 Steam locos. and the FRA required PTC on the 4014, 3985, and 844. hopefully there will be some type of agreement where they can have 4014 meet 3985 or have UP run 3985 on thier tracks. I also heard after restoretion the RRHMA could give the locos back and UP will cover the costs. untill then i'm glad these locos will finally see serivce once again.
