It's fiunny when you hear people say how original Blackadder was, they obviously never heard of Up Pompeii which had already created a historical comedy with a discontented servant as it's main character.

Produced by David Croft, who also produced, directed and co-wrote It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Dad's Army and Are You Being Served (amongst others). Perhaps not surprising he remembered actors he'd worked with before when he came to cast those series.
