Episode 51
If you are new to our channel, On Friday March 17th, while scrolling through Facebook I came across a horse that was scheduled to ship on the next slaughter truck to Mexico. The reason this horse stood out to me was because he had suffered horrible abuse. His right eye was missing and he was never given medical attention as the kill pen photos showed his eye covered in dried blood. There was no way I was going to let this poor animal suffer further by going to a slaughter house! So, we rescued him!
On Tuesday, March 21st, Cory and I drove 6 hours to Kemp, TX to pick him and we drove him straight to the vets office to get the medical attention he needs. Since he was rescued on St. Patricks Day we decided to name him Lucky.
Our last video was of Cory and I picking him up and the start of Lucky's medical care. If you haven't seen the video I will put a link below. From his first appointment Dr. Amber suspected he might have cancer because of the way his eye felt. She did X-rays and a biopsy of his eye and a spot on the side of his head because it looked abnormal to her. On Friday we received a partial report of the biopsy results. This is an update on what was found in the report and our path moving forward with Lucky's treatment.

Thank you to everyone that has sent us gifts of Alfa Pro, we truly appreciate your support and can't thank you enough!
We have had questions asking if we have an Amazon wish list to help with supplies for the horses. Now that the foundation is up and running we will be putting together an Amazon wish list. The one item we always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro, hay, etc) to the horses you can send that through our local feed store.
Ranchers Supply and HF&C have offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo and they will add the gifts to our account. Alfa Pro is $17.50 per 50lb. bag plus tax at Rancher Supply and $18.25 per bag at HF&C. WE go through about 2-1/2 bags per day to feed all the 8 horses. We also purchase hay and alfalfa from Ranchers Supply which is used to feed the horses and donkeys.
Thank you to all of our subscribers and followers for your support, for your kindness and generosity! We are grateful for everything and don't know what we would do without your support!

Thank you for rescuing Lucky! Squamous cell cancer is easier to treat than many other types. Hopefully you’ve caught it early enough since it’s not in his lymph nodes that it’s treatable/curable. You all are amazing!

You are running a true rescue! There is a large "rescue" in another state that should watch the incredible work that you, your vets and farrier do on a daily basis! Seeing that you understand "quality of life" doesn't mean that a horse must be completely pain free without the use of daily pain meds to be considered worthy of life after rescue is heartwarming! Many rescued horses have manageable pain with daily pain meds and care. You are a breath of fresh air! This should be a reminder to all those who support rescues that horses can have quality of life, even with health issues, when the rescue is willing to treat injury, disease and chronic pain. Your organization and work is heartwarming! Understanding that rescued horses are often done with being able to have a "job" and that often they just need a safe place to live out their lives with love, care, good groceries, safe shelter and another friend or two is something you convey beautifully. I am not against euthanasia, I had to say goodbye to my 38 year old gelding in January. We make a promise to do all that we can and sometimes that includes saying goodbye with dignity and respect. I pray that Lucky is able to have successful treatments, but even if, at some point, you have to say goodbye, no one could ever say you haven't given it your all! Obviously, Lucky's life, however long he has, will from this time on be filled with kindness and compassion. Sometimes that is all that is needed to give these precious lives the will to keep fighting! I have no doubt you will know if and when the time is right to say goodbye. I am not bashing another organization, just my thoughts as I will be switching my donations to you and your team.

The organization mentioned doesn't euthanize unless in the bone or has a mountain of other concerns. That's the first thing they checked for Lucky. His body score is also far better than some seen previously with Drafts. The kind of cancer provides a chance for evaluating for surgery. All factors that makes a difference to provide quality of life. I just hope you truly understand all of that. In lucky case, I'm just hoping for the best outcome for him and they would contribute to his care costs through grants from donations.

@@pjk1714 Yes, I do understand as I was a licensed veterinary technician until I retired. (15 of them with a large animal practice.) I also understand that a body condition score is subject to change during treatment, always hoping to trend towards a "better" score, contingent on age etc. I did not name any organization in that state, said the state's name only and there are several, so please don't assume something in a comment. It is heartwarming to see all that Fletcher Farms is doing, even on a small scale and I do not want to appear negative towards any organization. I am replying simply to clarify my statements and I removed the state I named in the hope of no further misunderstanding.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I don’t know what organization you are referring to but when Lucky came available another rescue group called me on the phone and said I was a glorified KZbinr that had no business taking this horse and I should let a qualified rescue handle him. I thought rescue groups should be working together to make a change for the horses not fighting over who was the better care giver? At that moment I knew I was doing the right thing not only for Lucky but for the greater good of the horses. We will always do the right thing and what is best for our animals. I started in rescue back in 2010 with dog rescue groups and I always said if I started a foundation I would do what’s best for the animals no matter what. Making that decision with Grandpa who coliced the 2nd week we had the original 6 horses was the hardest thing we have went through but we knew it was best for him and we gave him the best 2 weeks of his life full of love, kindness and food. We truly appreciate your support and generosity.

This is probably why the Horse was given up to kill. It makes you wonder what sort of history the previous owners have. Thank you wonderful big hearted people for rescuing this big boy. We also have a rescue from a kill pen that was one of the Premerine babies. She a beautiful Red Roan (Mi-Ladi). She was just 10 months old when she was first rescued. The lady that rescued her didn't want to keep her because she fought with her other horses, so we bought her. We got her at 2 years of age. We loved & train this beautiful filly. She is now 14 & boss of our mini ranch. Loves people & has a Palomino partner. She is sweet & a great jumper even without a rider. Loves women most. A bit dominate over our Pal, but being in an open pasture they get along very well. My Pal (Brezzi) is the sweetest most living Mare in the world. We brought her down from up north as a young filly. She is so gentle & tolerates Mi-Ladi. Both are trained by Natural Horsemanship. Gentle loving mares.

My 11 year old GSD had a melanoma in her right eye socket. Our local vet took two shots at removing it and leaving the eye. They were unsuccessful at removing it all so an ophthalmologist in Spring, Tx. removed the tumor, surrounding tissue and the eye. That was before the holidays and so far so good. She is active and functions well. Good luck to you and Lucky.

🐎When your wonderful 💉vet🩺 was saying how if they had to remove a larger area that she wouldn't have enough left to suture the skin together, I thought of a short surgical procedure that may be a simple solution that we used on the ward I worked in where, doctors, to create skin that can be used to repair or replace other skin just about anywhere on the body perform a short surgery, during which an expander balloon is placed under the skin, then over a period of several weeks, the balloon will be filled with saline fluid to stretch the skin and create more skin surface which can then be used for grafts etc and thought maybe you could draw your vets attention to this as a possible solution that can be used for animals too in those cases where they need more skin area to suture after tumour removals etc. Thank you for all your kindness and work to help these beautiful souls🐴💜🕯🙏Sending lots of love, prayers and light from me, Kat and my rescues, 🐾Kai & 🐾Hunter, Perth. ❣💯 Julie, Lucky is so lucky to have Dr. Amber clean out that right-eye socket and then biopsy the lump. The good news is that squamous cell carcinoma is the "best" one to have if you're going to have cancer. Like another sub said, cancer is everywhere nowadays. The other good news is Dr. Wagner of MVP has experience in just this type of cancer removal and then treatment with chemo/radiation that have successfully put the cancer in remission. Lucky is your beautiful boy with that curling lip and huge appetite, catching his weight back up. Many blessings to you and Cory! You have such a big heart!

Glad that the news is lot's better than expected, not that cancer is good news, but sounds like there are multiply options for treatment for Lucky. Kudos to all the staff at the vets for doing such a great job treating him so far. You brushing and using a curry comb on Lucky was probably the first time in his life he had it done. Unfortunately many of the Belgians and other draft horses are worked until their usefullness for their owners has run out. Truly wish there were more rescues out there to give them the care and retirement they deserve. Keep up the outstanding work and remember all of us who subscribe to your channel are proud of all the work you do.

Appreciate the update and good sign they are willing to evaluate. If you get the green light for surgery, recovery will be slow watching for infection but you will provide years to his future. The current infection may need to clear before proceeding. Just glad he is in such good hands. Safe travels tomorrow, going to be a long day.

To see him enjoying the hay gives me a warm feeling - he could also be on the way to slaughter if you had not saved him! There should be more people like you saving exploited, starved and abused gentle giants. Fingers crossed for "good" results on Monday. Waiting for the next update. God bless you and what you do for horses who have worked hard for humans a lot of years and go to kill pens when they get old 😢

I found your channel just today, and I absolutely love it. I went back pretty far, and have just been getting myself aquatinted with what your all about.....and I gotta tell ya, I love everything your doing and everything y'all represent. I am an "older" person, I'm disabled, and have been since 1996 when I broke my back (non horse related) my husband and I had a beautiful ranch in NV. for 22+ years where we raised, bred, rode, and showed quarter/paints. My love of horses started when I was VERY young. My folks bought me my first paint horse when I was about 6yrs old. And I couldn't get enough of these magnificent animals. I did a lot of halter classes, ran barrels, learned to rope, there wasn't anything I wouldn't try. Then my world came crashing down when I broke my back 🥺. We had to sell the ranch 😢 because I could no longer keep it up. We had 13 horses and I was the only one who rode. My husband tried, but just never had the knack 😉 He kept it looking beautiful, but he also had a full time job, so when I was no longer able to help.... we decided to sell 😢 I mean it wasn't fare for my horses to just stand in their corral's all day, or even the pasture, they were used to getting out, going for trail rides, or the show ring. Anyway now I vicariously live thru u tube channels and watch others fulfill their dreams. I've become very interested in the rescue life. I cannot believe how many horses are sent to slaughter 😡. A family pet (member) that's taken to the auction or kill pens simply because they got old or sick or injured. It literally makes me sick 🤢. So stories like yours I love to follow. These beautiful, majestic, gentle Giants, are worked sooo hard their whole lives, until they can't do it anymore, their poor bodies scared and broken, are taken to auctions to suffer a horrific death 🥺 It's uncontionable what people do!! So thank you for saving these precious lives, even if it's a short time, at least they knew love and kindness at the end. I will continue watching and supporting your channel. There is a special place for you and your husband my dear in heaven. Blessings to you and yours always 🙌 ❤️ Jennifer

My Palomino had a bulging eye, there was a tumor behind his eye and when he held his head down-grazing- it would swell to triple normal size. My Vet and I decided, after much consultation and thought and research, to leave it alone because we could take his eye out, but then there's a tumor under that so then what. He lived on happily until he turned 35, so take heart and do your best. The Horse Nation Salutes You!

Was the tumor cancer? The vet said this could be pretty aggressive because of the type of cancer it is. That’s why we are looking into removing it. There are new technologies such as a chemotherapy cream they put in their eye. But have to find out more about that today.
