Super Dan & wonder woman ! I don't know what else to say !!! For the last 6 + years I took care of my mom , that is only one person ... I was like a single parent , she made it past 97 . This reminds me of when my kids were young. I’d make six loaves of bread at a time, because that’s how many I could fit in the oven. When they were cooled I would put them all into the freezer in a bin bag. We could defrost a loaf in the microwave for three minutes and it tasted like fresh from the oven. Each batch lasted almost a week.

My Garden is right beside my hayfield too. The BEST thing I ever bought was a polyweave garden cover(recommended by Living Traditions homestead...my next favourite channel), It gave me an almost 100% weed free garden. It is a little pricey but will last for several years if taken up for the Ontario winter. You can buy online or I think I also found it at Lowes. It is NOT fabric weed cover but a woven poly plastic that allows sun and water through but kills weed growth...

Never heard of zucchini relish but sounds like a great way to preserve a vegetable that grows like a weed and spoils the day after harvest. Lol As simple as egg salad can be, using ingredients that are in abundance or at hand is a great way to keep things interesting. Since I’m newly lactose intolerant and can’t eat sour cream, I use mayonnaise for salads, dips and even cooking. Love plenty in my egg salad Wow, Goth pop. I have to look that up it sounds interesting. That bread, looks mouthwatering delicious. Slap some real butter on it...yum. I filmed an unboxing a couple weeks ago, tuned into 1h9m - not easy staying on point. Maybe that’s where editing comes in. Doubt that can be done on a phone.

My sincere condolences for the loss of a grandmother. Prayers and hugs for everyone. Thanks for the egg salad recipe. Zucchini relish sounds wonderful. I've put apples and raisins in egg salad even though it's a savory egg salad that I make. I'm a teeny bit surprised you don't have a bread maker amongst the kids. :) I first tasted rhubarb two years ago, but I planted it in my food forest, too. I hear that it works as a funnel to direct water to the trees if you plant it at the foot of the baby trees, so that's what I did.

@@LittleMountainRanch I will happily show you what I have, but my current food forest is still under construction! I moved to my property in 2014, and didn't start planting until 2016 - and then, just in baby steps because this ecoregion is so new and mysterious to me. Right now, everything is still mostly dormant. I'll take some photos, post them to Facebook, and send you a link. My favorite temperate food forest "teachers" are * Martin Crawford (UK; kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5Kcd3uBrZummq8) * Stefan Sobkowiak (Canada; kzbin.info/door/ufnDvlHF9NHzEL4c3ECZUA and kzbin.info/aero/PL2KDEvIH0SXwAklr68xNXRICkYTU_a_tm) * Sean (Shawn?) at Edible Acres (USA; kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5mqYqSJbdCMhck) Did I send you a bibliography? The *best* reference book I have on food forests is *_Edible Forest Gardens_* (2 volume set) by Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier (www.amazon.ca/Edible-Forest-Gardens-2-Set/dp/1890132608). It's very expensive, took me a full year to read (I read extremely quickly at over 600 wpm, but the information in these two books is very dense). It's an invaluable reference guide, explaining not only how, but _why_ which makes it easier to implement on a specific locale. Another invaluable reference book in my library is *_Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, 2nd Edition_* by Toby Hemenway (www.amazon.ca/Gaias-Garden-Guide-Home-Scale-Permaculture/dp/1603580298) This one is much more affordable and more accessible, but not as comprehensive. My first (self-imposed) rule is to plant what either I or my animals will actually eat, and those plants which supports the plants we want to eat. I tend to pick as many native plants as I can to fill the niches, and I am currently adding lots of flowers to attract the pollinators and beneficial insects. For example, I try to plant lupins near my fruit trees. I love lupins (it's the state flower of my home state) in and of themselves, but they are perennial and fix nitrogen, so can help feed my fruit trees. _Lupinus polyphyllus_ is native to Western Washington and Western BC, so I planted several last year, though it looks like only a couple survived. They apparently don't do well in full sun on my property. I'm trying to design an edible fedge (fence + hedge) that will guide the deer and bear (etc.) away from my gardens and food forest, but will give them something to replace their natural forage. I believe we have to be good stewards for the wild critters we displace. We must coexist with all life. I'm planting LOTS of culinary and medicinal herbs around the trees this year, as well, in hope of distracting insect pests by masking the fruit tree scents. I'll let the annuals self seed this first year to establish themselves, and start harvesting next year. I've been planting lots of berries lately. Ribes - currants and gooseberries - are foreign to me, but seem to do very well here and are delicious. I'm also planting lots of raspberries, huckleberries, and other native berries.
@LittleMountainRanch

I value your comments on this topic so much! I don't know why, but the way you write really resonates and inspires me. I have such a clear picture now of what I need to do. It's going to be slow baby steps, but the long term goal is becoming clear. Thank you, my friend.
@kirstenwhitworth8079
@kirstenwhitworth8079 5 жыл бұрын
@@LittleMountainRanch Slow baby steps are my preferred speed in a food forest. Lots of observation and experimentation. It helps if you can propagate your own plants. There aren't any hard and fast rules, except try to plant vertically as well as horizontally. In my last food forest (in Texas), I put in trap crops to lure pests away from the plants I wanted to harvest. E.g., parsley. I'm trying to plant tons of parsley because I use alot of it, but I know that other creatures love it too. So I'm planting way too much of it as borders around many beds. I'm putting in aromatic herbs - mostly annuals like dill, cilantro, etc. which tend to be in the either of the families Asteraceae ("like asters" (or daisies)) or Apiaceae ("of the bees"). So, when these herbs bolt and flower, they attract different kinds of pollinators and beneficial predators like wasps. I'll let them go to seed so I don't have to plant them next year, and will probably have a better harvest anyway. Last year, I planted echinacea, monarda and lupins around the fruit trees and hazel bushes. I put in a gooseberry and a witch hazel. I thought I'd plant squash as a groundcover. Apparently, I get too much sun (what‽ how is that possible this far north‽) because most of the squash and several flowers turned into crispy shreds - unless they had shade. This year, I am trying strawberries as ground cover, and the sun-loving mediterranean and southern European herbs in hope of keeping them from frying again. What I'm trying to say is that I'm not afraid to make mistakes BECAUSE I'm taking baby steps; my mistakes won't break the bank, but they will bring me insight into my particular plot of land. I really love your channel, and I really want to see you succeed in building resiliency and "explosive abundance" as my Permaculture teacher says. Thank YOU, my friend. :)

So happy to see your beautiful face and family in a video. I am terribly sorry to hear of the loss. Please give your sweet babies a hug from me. I pray God eases their hearts and yours as well. It’s never easy to lose a loved one. Your egg salad recipe looks fantastic! I’d love it if you shared your recipe for caesar dressing sometime. It’s my favorite but I haven’t found a homemade version I love yet. Look forward to that bread recipe too. It rose beautifully for just one rise. So yummy. Anywhooooo...😊 TFS sweet lady and have a blessed day/week...till we see you again. 💜💜💜 ~Lisa

Those sandwiches look delicious! There's just something amazing and fun with working with bread dough. I'm kinda new to your channel. I just quietly watch some of your videos without commenting, but was wondering if you have a video on how your house was built? Love the wood work inside the house. I'm always looking at watching videos on building projects of any kind :D

Hi there - our house was built with logs from our property in 1974. We have done lots of work to it over the years, and I have one where we installed with windows, you might be interested in.

Family ALWAYS comes first and certainly after a death in the family it is understandable to stop making videos for a while. But I do appreciate the explanation. Seed starting???? I was thinking that mulching the asparagus was the solution as well. I hope it works :)

I love zucchini relish! I will try it next time I make egg salad. I hate peeling eggs. I laughed out loud when I saw how many eggs you were boiling. I boil 6 for the week for one. I noticed in another vlog that you stored your eggs in a basket on the counter. Why not in the fridge?

Do you have an Instant Pot? I have been pressure cooking my eggs and the peel practically falls off and so fast! That looks so good! And it does always look a lot of mayo(s) 😍 and never is!!

@@LittleMountainRanch really? I cook mine on manual for 5 minutes let rest for 1 minute release pressure and immediacy into ice bath. They are always amazing. Honestly, until the Instant Pot, I gave up on hard boiling fresh eggs cause I was wasting more (well no giving back to the chickens) than I was eating!!

Does horizon distributors ship all over bc? I'm also trying to reduce my plastic packaging and I'm having a hard time finding a bulk distributor up north were I am.
@LittleMountainRanch
@LittleMountainRanch 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! In order to get free shipping you’ll need to start a small co-op unless you think you’d order 1000.00 at a time. You may also need a business number, but it’s usually pretty easy to find someone with one who would like to get in on free shipping on bulk organic items. Their website has the information.
