Muay Lek breaks my heart. I know she’s happy to be free but she’s kind of lost. It’s good to have Fah Mai, Thong Ae & Jenny approach her bc they are so lovable. Plus, those cute squeaks of the youngsters must transmit reassurance that she’s safe & loved!! 💖🐘

Truth is, ENP isn't a sanctuary, it's a privately owned for-profit tourism elephant-camp where the owners also have a separate non-profit Trust called "Save Elephant Foundation." Most people don't research the place, so there is much we haven't known. After numerous years, last summer I did due diligence in researching it, and I learned much. MuayLek is involved and participating in the swim, right? She wasn’t the one on the shore not going in. I cannot tell them apart. I know the little ones but… I’ve been watching for 2 or 3 years.. everyday I check in and I can’t tell them apart. How old is an elephant when they reach their full size?

They have a lifespan much like humans so a 7 year old Ellie is still a child. They mature as teenagers just like we do. The 15 year old mother Ellie who Lek had to help teach to nurse her baby was traumatised, being really too young. We often see her playing like a child with her baby because she is still young and immature but is learning to be a good mother from her supportive nannies and friends.

@@Beruthiel45 that is Chaba’s mother who is young and plays with her child like she is a child as well? I remember when they were rescued.. they refused getting on the truck like Muay Lek and mother and baby walked to freedom. That was very emotional.

How big an elephant gets at what age fully depends on nutrition and the regularity of how well they are feeding, and their overall condition. A very badly nourished elephant remains small, and severe injuries can also stunt growth, so size isn't the determiner of age. Additionally, age is not a determiner of sexual maturity, as a very well fed elephant from babyhood can reach near-adult size by age 7 (as Faa Mai did!), and can conceive a calf at age 6 as Dok Ngern did, and give birth to her babe at age 8 as Dok Ngern did at ENP. It all depends on peace, safety, condition and great ongoing nutrition, which can allow them to thrive. Chaba's mother, Bunma, had arrived terribly stressed from her previous environment where she had been chained and not allowed to walk, and where she had been removed from her own mother at a very early age, which had stolen from her time to learn from her own mother, and hindered her peace greatly. Dok Ngern, Dok Mai's mother, had arrived at the age of 5 along with nanny Sri Nuan, and being quickly adopted into Faa Mai's family, she healed quickly and thrived well. Circumstances play greatly into their ability to thrive and heal. The more they thrive, the faster they grow, the faster they mature and develop. Studies have been done on these exact issues at an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, a study I've read, and this is what they found. Under the best conditions, a young female elephant can go into estrus as early as age 3, and can conceive at age 5, delivering at age 7, while drought and lack of food delays estrus, growth and sexual maturity and can prevent conception in mature elephants. Under the best conditions, young bull elephants can become sexually mature at age 5, though they are very much growing. Food, peace and safety is everything, and for females, the security and presence of their mother in their life is terribly important, key.
