This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2023 Volvo XC40 subcompact luxury SUV. The Volvo XC40 has a modern exterior design with revised headlamps, an updated front bumper and grille and there are new wheel designs. It comes standard with chrome exterior accents, available black, body coloured door handles, a front grille with black inserts and a chrome frame and bright aluminum roof rails, available high gloss black.
There are two powertrain options for the Volvo XC40 , B4 and B5 both with a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder, an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The Volvo B4 powertrain has 194 horsepower and the B5 247 horsepower. Standard AWD in Canada. In the US, only the B5 powertrain is an AWD model, B4 FWD.
The Volvo XC40 comes standard with a 12.3” driver display, 9” touchscreen, Google Assistant, Apple Carplay, heated comfort front leather seats, power driver seat with memory, power 4-way lumbar support, power tailgate, 18” wheels and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert.
Available features include, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, 360-degree camera, pilot assist, adaptive cruise control, fog lamps with cornering function and park assist front, rear and sides. There is one feature the Volvo XC40 does not offer, ventilated front seats.
In Canada, there is only one B4 model, it starts at $42,250 CAD. B5 Core $45,750 CAD, B5 Plus $49,450 CAD, B5 Ultimate $55,600 CAD.
In the US, B4 Core $37,645 USD, B4 Plus $42,045 USD, B4 Ultimate $45,795 USD.

What pleasantly surprised me was that when it got colder, when I turned on the car on the Volvo aplication on my phone, it warmed up the steering wheel for me and I drove very happy all the way! :)) ​

I still love my 2019 XC40. I was thinking about upgrading but, there are a little less features on the newer models. Also, the app on the older model is SO much better. ZACK The Volvo logo is intended to be the alchemical symbol for iron. Hope i dont come off as woman splaining :)

I didn’t realize they eliminated the drive modes this year. Glad I bought mine last year - I use those with some frequency. And Zack, FWIW, “Off Road” should have been labeled “Snow/Ice”, as it electronically recreates the old low-range transfer box. You, of all people, should like that! 😉

As to lack of sport mode, I can only imagine buyers not calling it out as a desirable feature. It may be fun when you first get the vehicle but... While not a Volvo my car has sport mode and I never use it. It's a fuel mileage killer. Plus I have a roadster for sporty driving! Overall I like this model.

Excellent review, as usual. You guys were in rare form for this one! You always do a great job covering all aspects of the cars, especially the trims and packages and costs which a lot of reviewers don't. But I knew Zack would complain about no AM radio, lol...I've said this before, (unless it's different from the U.S.) once you've loaded any of the available radio apps, you can listen to your AM station anytime and anywhere either by touching the button on the screen, or better yet, just tell Google to play it. No need to connect your phone or even take your hands off the wheel. Not the same as the old days, I admit, but it's not like you can't get AM.

Hej, Fabulous video with detailed expalanation guys. My observation is MY2021 T4 having screeching noise when you release the brake slowly on the traffic signal/ driving in a basement ramp parking or bumper to bumper traffic on city. Whole body rattles and makes annoying noise from disc brake. Volvo india says its operational noise, which not acceptable to any standards for 10km, 5000kms, or 62000kms of XC40/XC60. I doubt something strange when whole car is so silent, this makes noisy feature. Some observations? Cheers, Siva

I’m actually sad that at least in the US they no longer do the two tone look. My current xc40 is white with a black roof. I think other companies have stopped doing it too. Also Zach, do you guys get Sirius XM in Canada, cause I feel like AM radio is going away.

Well I’m glad I still have the gas powered version … I like having the dynamic mode which makes driving super fun , and I’m not sure how much gas mileage has improved , but it’s probably not noticeable . Finally I’m happy with the reliability

Hi! I love my older model too. There are a lot of options you don't get with the refreshed model. My friend bought a new XC60, and the app is so basic compared to what ours can do. Also, she has no bag hook on glove box, no trash bin, and the rear seat down feature is MANUAL!? So unlike our XC40s, there is no button in the back to get the seats down automatically. i was advised by Volvo that this is due to chip shortage... little corners cut.

@@winstonwinston3487 I somewhat agree. I feel like one should be either full fuel or all electric. I dont think id purchase a mild hybrid if I had the choice. In this case my friend really loved her older Volvo and wanted to stay with the brand, so she went with the XC60 B6. That being said, the B6 is really smooth, comfortable, and very luxurious, and clean. the start/stop feature is so quiet, and quick to start up, I really love it.. I DO NOT use the start stop on my T5, as its just so clunky and little laggy. Anyhow, knowing that our models have more features than the current ones, especially the features on the app, make me want to maintain and keep mine running for years to come. :)

For the person that asked about the styling being updated, there is a smaller EX30 being introduced in July. It will have a quite different interior design. But, and it's a big but, it is EV only. If you don't want an EV then you won't get any new Volvo. There's mixed information on weather the old design well be significantly updated.

HD radio has almost made AM obsolete. AM reception is interference prone in places like downtown Vancouver, and most of the major stations have HD versions of of their AM stations.

You need to have in your equipment both AM and FM radio before you consider putting HD Radio on your vehicle because it runs on top of both kinds of frequency (this is NOT DAB radio). HD radio has been an even bigger disaster than DAB radio in UK / Europe.

I actually miss my 2020 t5 r design compared to my 2023. I agree about the drive modes. The polestar was so great! As far as gas difference on the mild hybrid is only about 2 miles per gallon MAYBE 😒. I also miss my 2 tone black roof. I love the same looking interior as my 2020. Living in FL I am pissed about no ventilated COOLING seat and they switched my leather for fake leather, ew. IDk what's going on in Canada, but mine Does Not Have 360° camera. STILL I love my VOLVO

I prefer the design language of the SPA cars more than the CMA cars. the rear of the XC40 and C40 just look a little awkward, vs the V60, V90 and XC60 feel timeless 5+ years on from their launch
