Hey everyone! This no DLC tutorial is still a good series for learning the thematic concepts and process of playing and succeeding in EU4. However, there has been MAJOR patches since the release of this series. We now have a brand new series, no DLC, with the recent 1.31 patch. This time FRANCE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHLImpyQhaiVqbs

I really enjoyed your tutorial! I bought the game some years ago, but man it was hard to get a grasp on what to do. I did have some experience with Crusader Kings 2 but when I got EU4 I had pretty much forgotten everything about CK2 and how to properly play. I'll be looking forward to the next episodes.

Still learning - nicely done! As an old fogie who loves his war themed board games, one thing I've said to others in my hobby is that if you sit down with a complete noob and proceed to thrash him because you're experienced and you can, all you've managed is to convince him never to play your favorite game again.

@@KRX_ Nice - I'll be sure to pay attention. In my Venice play, I was saddened that the new release broke my save game, and I was unable to finish the game (only about 5 years left). Personally, I love Venice, so it was my first choice to learn with. (masochistic - I know) Still, learned a lot about ally management and how to expand in all directions by rotating your 'victims'. ;) (BTW, in that game, became Italy, had a profit income of about 230d and a treasury of just over 80k d, army of 460 regiments and a navy of 490 ships; lots of fun to be honest)
@KRX_

@@jeffreyestahl It is possible to go into your Steam settings and adjust the version of the game you're playing on, to go back and play older save files if you wanted to finish venice. Venice definitely would of been a tougher nation to play as someone learning the game, glad to hear it went well!

@@KRX_ I have a leisurely anaconda style of play, utilizing heavy diplomacy to create defensive shields from behind which I can strike in limit ways until they're no longer needed. (and always always outspend any opponents) It's a play style I've used to effect in other games (including Stellaris which I love too). Killed me a lot when playing HOI4 since that game almost requires the constant and rapid push to succeed. Thanks for the advice on being able to finish older games. Sadly, I'd deleted that file when I believed it would no longer be possible to complete it. I'd do a play again sometime as Venice; it's always been my favorite go-to nation in most games.

That is exactly what I was going for! Great to hear someone appreciate it.... We this tutorial is still 99% up to date, but we do actually have some new tutorials as well, that take on different perspectives and cover new patched versions of the game, in case you'd rather learn from those. Either way, good luck with the learning process, and let me know if you have any questions! But yes, this game is extremely reactive and analytical. There is no definitive move set. You always have to re-evaluate your surroundings. It's like chess, but with a random setup!

How would you recommend getting into the various DLC in terms of which to buy first and in what order to learn them? Should I buy and learn one at a time or attempt to tackle several at once?
@KRX_
@KRX_ 4 жыл бұрын
That is a tough question, because all the DLCs add a bunch of small intertwined features to the game. We're asking the questions about "what to get first" during the Twitch streams all the time! It's hard to remember which DLCS do what honestly when you've been playing with them for years. I'd say look at Art of War, Rights of Man and Cossacks. Cossacks isn't usually recommended, however it adds a VERY important system to the game, the idea of "favors" and it really balances out the diplomacy a lot! As always, make sure you only buy them on sale! They go on sale often enough.

Good tutorial. I am just playing Portugal 🇵🇹. I choose to break the Alliance with England because they don’t come to defend you against anyone and they will ask you to attack Castile.
@KRX_
@KRX_ 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching StewEnergy! I'd be very surprised if they decided to attack Castile. They're too far away (once France takes back their land from England, which happens very quickly.) Also might be worth noting that if you're allied to Castile, and England attack, they wouldn't call you into that war since you would be obligated to defend Castile instead. By allying England AND Castile, you prevent them from having hostile relations with each other essentially because neither want to take the other, knowing you would have to be on the defenders side. Also, defensive call to arms is almost ALWAYS answered by the AI, unless they're bogged down in their own wars. So England not honoring the call seems unlikely as well. England is a pretty big stick and a strong navy. They don't do a lot as an ally, but their presence, as an ally, tends to prevent other countries from wanting to attack you. Overall, England is a very weak and unstable country at the start of the game. Aside from beating up Ireland and Scotland, they don't tend to start aggressive wars with Europe, and even if they do, they're ineffective because the AI has a hard time shuffling armies across water. Regardless though, Portugal is such a safe and stable position that being allied, or not allied to England is not going to matter! You have a lot of flexibility with Portugal, especially if you keep Castile a friendly ally.
@StewEnergy
@StewEnergy 4 жыл бұрын
KRX you are right, but they got me involved in the two roses war and France tried to occupy my territory, and all of the sudden England told me that I need to attack Castile (I was allied also with them) with them. England don’t helped me and I got a wipe out. Break England alliance, it’s not useful

I'm familiar with HoI4 and all of the basics with that. EU 4 is harder for most because not only is there more mechanics and abstractions of managing a nation, the historical context isn't recent and there isn't a narrow focus like HoI and WW2. I have all the DLC enabled, but I don't understand the big picture. Idk how to tell if I'm doing the right things before I unpause. Do I just try it out and see what's what?

The first three episodes of this series covers my personal thought process before un-pausing the game. So discusses Diplomacy (ep 1,) Economy/Internal Situation (ep 2,) and Setting the Direction of the Country/Production (ep 3.) I then tried Castile as I was hoping to colonize South America but Portugal beat me to it. So Portugal seems like a good nation to play as if you like exploring. Any tips for exploring though (Attrition on the open see wipes out my ships before I can really get anywhere!)
@KRX_
@KRX_ 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I highly recommend only playing from the 1444 start date, the other start dates haven't been supported or updated properly as the game has been updated over the last X amount of years. So sometimes things can be a bit goofy. To answer your question... this tutorial series covers exploration. However I just can't articulate all you need to know in these youtube comments. Portugal starts with an explorer, that I use pretty quickly to explore the west coast of Africa. Exploration is a SLOW process that requires certain ideas/technology. It includes a lot of going back and forth, back and forth. A big tip is, using SHIFT + Mouse Click in order to queue up multiple moves for the ships. Also light ships are fastest so should be used to explore. So you use shift click to queue up a lot of moves, including it's return home, and then you just ignore it till it comes back. Again, this cannot be taught and explained from the youtube comments...

Watching a few of these series, one question comes to mind and sorry if it was covered elsewhere, but they ever mention why they choose that exact starting date? It is an interesting period, with a lot of big events coming up, but it is also passed over other also big periods. 11th November is 11/11/1444. That's as much as I could guess.
@KRX_
@KRX_ 2 жыл бұрын
I think the developers have explained why they chose the starting date, I can't remember the specific reason. However the general idea is that 1444 is around the end of the middle ages and onto the age of discovery. The start is only a few years before the fall of Byzantium and the discovery of the new world!

This tutorial is now slightly out of date, they updated the map occasionally, so the environment around france has changed and been enhanced to include more detail of actual france in 1444. Everything we discuss is still relevant and up to date! Your world will just look a little different. The same concepts and considerations apply! France is very powerful, so be careful if they are a foe, and be grateful if they are an ally! You are correct that all those little countries around France are french vassals and will support France in all wars, offensive or defense.

Thats an interesting idea... I mean we play on our Twitch channel a couple days a week and have an active discord community ready to help and answer questions (links for both in the video description.) There are usually multiplayer games going on Twitch all the time, however this are NOT new player friendly, and a lot of the people who make content for this game are very 'hardcore.' I do take some pride in the fact we have a unique outlook to the game and from that we strive for a more welcoming community than many other channels dedicated to the paradox strategy games. We have not (yet) done a multiplayer community game thing, but we do hang out and chat weekly during EU4 streams. A great place to ask questions and learn details about the game.

Should I try to ally smaller countries and try to take on bigger ones or do I ally with the stronger nations and eat up the smaller ones??
@KRX_
@KRX_ 4 жыл бұрын
Well, we actually have a Bengal quick start guide on the channel that just went live, maybe would be useful to check that out? Bengal is a very powerful and rich country. You should be able to ally other medium/large countries in the region and beat up the smaller nations around you. So to answer your question, ally the big nations, eat the small nations.

A new major patch is on the way for EU4, we'll definitely need to do some more video series like this for that update! At the moment we do have series covering Muscovy, Ottomans, England and Castile in this same style already on the youtube channel.

I've been playing this game for a while, without any DLC's and God it kills me when you take a 3 month break just to come back to the game and everything looks completely different! Anyway I started again (just like in my last game) as Cyprus, so far so good but as always I fall behind with tech (overextension ftw!). Ottomans are partitioned, I have some Hungarian and Crimean lands plus nice blob of yellow where ottomans heart used to be hehe. Unfortunetely Poland turning hostile (I didn't join their war with Otto, instead I started a new one with Malmuks on my side, ops) so I had no choice but to start being friends with Muscovy and I'm guessing if I could get Bohemia or Denmark on my side too maybe we can reduce Poland a bit.

Sounds like a successful run as cyprus so far! Thats a tough start I imagine!

@@KRX_ It's the second time I'm doing this, so it's easier. Plus it's on easy mode so it's a lot easier. I wanted to try out religious ideas but that was a bad choice since I don't have the economy now to convert my provinces. But anyways I'm about the same power as ottomans, I'm using Kazan right now to get money to improve my production and I have put my further expansion on hold for now as I want to be able to build a decent size fleet since I plan on sticking my nose into heart of Europe, Venice will be my entry point most likely. I played as Navara a few time too, but it was a lot of restarts, eventually carpeted both Americas in Europe I had few german states left and then big polish blob. :) imgur.com/pLnie38 World Image

@@KRX_ one last question sir i truly enjoy how the gameplay of this video but is it worth to buy the extreme edition ? or just buy based game ?
@KRX_
@KRX_ 4 жыл бұрын
The extreme version is not really worth it. There is an empire founders bundle you could consider to get a few good DLC. Most of what comes in the "extreme version" is random scraps/junk.
@ZanathKariashi
@ZanathKariashi 4 жыл бұрын
@@kaefy2417 The extreme edition is just mostly some minor unit graphic packs and a music pack for Byzantium (most of it was pre-order bonuses for pre-ordering the game or pre-ordering the game via specific merchant promotions that wer eventually made available a few months after release for purchase by people who missed it and still wanted them). The only gameplay affecting things are American Dream (adding the 1776 start-date, a few period appropriate colonial events, and colonial america unit pack)), and the Purple Phoenix dlc that adds a few extra thematic missions to Byzantium's mission tree (replacing most of the generic ones they have without). American Dream is largely irrelevant unless you actually play using the 1776 start-date. And Byzantium is one of the hardest nations in the game to play, so it's really only worth getting Purple Phoenix if you're a rabid fan of byzantium.

Knowing how and where to press the buttons is a big step in learning the game, this tutorial might be too simply for you then in all honesty. However, what we're trying to teach in the tutorial, is the process of decision making that goes beyond just pressing the buttons. The context before the decision making and available choices. In hopes of helping brand new beginners to the game, we do have to start with just pressing the buttons though!

No, this is a game you buy. You can get it during common sales for $5-10. This playthrough is without any of the included DLC, which definitely keeps the price down! I think you can try the game with the Xbox game pass, so if you're a member over there, then it might be "free."

The amount of times you repeat things is probably necessary with this damn game. The tone of voice helps too. Gets annoying when some cocky 2000+ hour player is like "Just do this!!!!!" and you do that and it doesn't work because they didn't explain WHY it worked.

I appreciate this comment because it gets to the heart of what I was trying to do! I'm still trying to improve and get better at explaining the game, so this tutorial is not without flaws, but I was trying to be thoughtful with explaining the concepts of the game.

Sorry to hear that! The game is rather complicated, I tried to go slow and set things up thematically, rather than just start rattling off mechanisms of the game. Many people have said these tutorials are too slow and repeating, but I found that to be a better way of teaching the game for new players. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask, but this game may not be for you, or maybe just this tutorial is not for you!

This tutorial is for complete beginners! The first 5-10mins are meant for people who may have not even played a Paradox grand strategy game before and need more understanding of "what" the game is about. People that have a foundational understanding of the game will not benefit from these videos! Thanks for watching though and let me know if you have any questions.
