I always come here to hear the STUPID review and I am never disappointed. By the way if you listen to a transmitted narrow band and you are wide band SMART people would change to narrow band receive and will not hear as much noise because you are now listening to narrow band, SMART people would know this STUPID people don't. For anyone interested in the MXT115, the newest version of the radio is now wide band capable. That was my biggest gripe with the radio (that and Midland leaving out channels 8-14) . The microphone also has moved the buttons from the top to the front of the microphone, and added a third button for ANC (Automatic Noise Cancelling) which is optional.

I'll bet the antenna wire is so thin because its easier to pinch between the door and frame so you don't have to drill a hole. Randy has proven it still works ok. A larger more efficient coax cable is more likely damaged when pinched in the door. Very clever, Midland, for a beginner radio that is only installed on a temporary basis.

As a new to GMRS user, I appreciate all of your honest reviews.

Huh. Amazed at that antenna; seems to break every 'antenna design rule' in the book. I really don't know what else you could ask for in a 'grab and go' radio at this price point. Good on them for the follow up. And yeah, I mentioned that they call it a "power port" now, but not to be a jerk - I still call it a cigarette lighter too, but my daughter, for example - would have no clue. What does the thing that keeps my phone charged have to do with cigarettes? It sucks getting old. To me the 80's were like, 20 years ago.
@W2IRT3 жыл бұрын
The antenna is a solid performer because it's a quarter wavelength, and with the pie tin to electrically "push" against it's going to work very well. Quarter-wave antennas just work. No, they don't have any gain, but they offer a flat SWR and for most applications they are more than enough antenna.
@WiltWa3 жыл бұрын
The “Sad Ham” in me got all worked up that he didn’t carefully place the antenna in the center of the baking pan, but it still worked, and I’ve used this before myself. As to the difference between a cigarette lighter plug and a power port plug. Just try taking an old cigarette lighter and stick it in a power plug. That won’t work, but sticking a power plug into a “cigarette lighter” port will work fine! (As we all know).
@W2IRT3 жыл бұрын
@@WiltWa Re the pie tin, YES!!! I wanted to reach through the screen and center it! Can't say I've ever used a pie tin myself, but as a Pore-n-Starvin™ college student in the 80s I stuck my 2m mag mount with a 5/8th wave Larsen whip on top of my fridge, with the tip of the whip bent over against the ceiling. It worked well. And for my test-bed radio the mag mount is on top of my power supply in the shack. I can hit the repeater, so it works, eh.

My experience with Midland: marketing sends an email out stating they've updated the mxt115. The small antenna is the perfect design for effective and reliable communications. It is a quarter-wavelength antenna, which will present a 1:1 match at ~50 ohms, and will radiate effectively. If you're in a city a quarter wave is better choice than a gain antenna since it will pick up fewer strong intermodulation products than a gain antenna would. The surface area of your pie tin is the ideal size for the signal to "push" against so naturally it will perform well. As for that coax, look and see if it's RG-316 or RG-174. Both suck, but 316 is slightly better. You're looking at 16db loss per 100' of cable, so assuming that is a 25' run that's -4dB. Congrats, your 15W radio is now about a 6.5 Watt radio.

@@rangersmith4652 Ditto. My wifes '12 Forester has no dash real estate at all. Now the radio rides in the center console and is so small she can still store stuff there. many many (many) consumer electronics have used weights (first lead, now steel) to give their products heft which they expect to be perceived as quality. it is used for both hand held devices and static devices. the first time i saw this was in my first LED clock radio, circa 1980. it was about 1/5 lighter without the lead tape. sometimes this is done to intentionally give the product heft so it doesn't slide around as much, such as an old school telephone.

Here's a video suggestion; if you've already covered this in another video, please let me know. I'm getting into overlanding. I'm also a happy ham. I'm trying to figure out what radio setup will give me the most flexibility with the fewest devices. I never know whether I'll be in a situation (alone or in a convoy) that will require amateur radio, GMRS, FRS, CB, or whatever. What combination of devices will give me the best coverage? Are there multiband radios available that would allow me to cover a bunch of my possible needs in a single device? I'm willing to acquire a combination of mobile base stations and handhelds. I'm not afraid to learn a device with more complexity if that's what I need to do to reduce the number of units installed in my vehicle (in fact, I would expect a multiband device to be inherently more complicated). I look forward to your guidance. Thanks! Steve KB2PWM

Love your channel, watch all your vids. That said, your complaints on the radio before really were nit-picky. You've reviewed several radios with the same buttons on the top of the microphone and pressing the mic key never got a mention. Midland is correct, the 7 or 9 settings, once set, aren't something you visit again so it's no big deal. Every youtuber that has actually tested the "junk" antenna has been pleasantly surprised - some even amazed - at how well it actually worked. (I didn't use mine, bought something better, but keep the original as a spare.) It's the only radio simple enough that even my metric bride can use it, and does. This is nice because we've got a great repeater in town giving us many miles of coverage all around us. One feature you didn't mention in either review is the bracket and how nicely and easily the radio can be removed. Very handy if you wanna spray-wash the mud outta your vehicle and remove the radio first to do it. Also it's size is very small and easily mounted in center consoles and other out-of-sight places. The sister radio, the MXT275, has all the display features right on the microphone which is a wonderful feature I haven't seen anywhere else. The speaker in the mic is nice and loud and clear and both radios have the option of using the mic speaker, the radio speaker, or both. Again, this radio is so easy MY wife uses hers. I'm taking my wife here. You've no idea...

Cool theory, but because Midland was the only company making GMRS radios that operate only in narrowband, and they dont do that anymore, so now ALL GMRS radios operate primarily in wide-band, and since the FCC's own rules/specifications say GMRS is wideband, your little theory doesn't really seem to be coming true.

Narrow band is what kills Midland. For a bunch of high school kids driving around seeing where the action is in Hicksville USA, they will work just find. The repeater crowd is too upscale and holds their pinky out while drinking their tea anyway.

So... is there any way to change the Mxt115 to operate in wideband ? I thought I saw somewhere that it could be changed but cant find it after scouring the entire internet.

On one hand, it’s simplicity and price makes me want to get it…. On the other hand, for just over double the $$$ I can get a wouxun kg-1000g….. 🤔

i'm a licenced ham and therefore expert, no not really an expert, only foundation level. the antenna is a quarter wave, why would it not work? the cooking pan is quite a good ground plane for such a short wavelength. the RG 174 co-ax is not great at UHF, but it's short so the over all loss is acceptable for the intended use.

So, If I but the FCC license, can I transmit at 15w on the first 7 channels that are defaulted to "Low Power"??

Can I get these in Canada where I will not be using them to broadcast?

Lots of kids are potheads these days you could call them blunt lighters. When I was a youth I purchased a 1985 Mercury Grand Marquis that sat under a tree in my friend's dad's lawn for 7 years for the grand total of $200.00. It had 4 or 5 cigarette lighters. None of us smoked tobacco but a few smoked weed and that's what they were used for.

Good morning, thank you for the video. How can you tell the difference between the new and old versions?
@TheNotaRubicon3 жыл бұрын
as mentioned/demonstrated in the video - the old version has the old-style USB-A charging plug, the new version has the smaller USB-C charging plug
