From the Release Notes (that people should read before installing anything) When updating from Ver. 2.02 or earlier, you need to update to Ver. 2.04 or Ver. 2.05 before proceeding with the Ver. 5.00 update. Only update to Ver. 5.00 after updating to Ver. 2.04 or Ver. 2.05. Hope they come out with a patch for this because $700 is insane money to flash a firmware haha.

There should always be an option to roll back to previous firmware versions. This should be absolutely possible by preparing an SD card with appropriate bootloader and firmware version irrespective of the current firmware version installed. If this is not possible with an any camera it’s a massive oversight because there will always be the possibility of a bad firmware install borking a device.

This is incredibly frustrating. I recently made the switch from Fujifilm to Sony, and hearing about your experience is both shocking and disappointing. I used to think Fujifilm was the only company that compromised their products with firmware updates, but it looks like Sony might be guilty of the same. Have you reached out to the seller? Here in Europe, most commercial resellers of used electronics provide a 12-month warranty, but I'm not sure how it works where you are. Meanwhile I had an ancient, used (8 years old at the time) Canon 5D Classic that had the mirror fall out during a shoot and Canon replaced it free of charge because it was a known issue. In fact, I found my correspondence "Thank you for contacting Canon product support concerning your EOS 5D camera. I am sorry to read about the mirror disconnecting. It has come to our attention that in rare instances the main mirror of some EOS 5D Digital SLR cameras may detach due to deterioration in the strength of the adhesive. As a result, Canon USA will repair and reinforce the mirror portion of affected EOS 5D cameras free of charge. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair. " At the time, I was a poor college student and this meant the world to me. They repaired the camera, cleaned it (including cleaning the sensor), and overnighted it back free of charge. THAT'S how you do customer service. A couple years later when I had a real job, I splurged and bought a new 5D Mk3 and I continue to use Canon to this day.

Issue started when updating firmware from v2 to v4 and I had no issues using the camera before then. Luckily, it was under warranty (I also bought Sony protect plus) and it went out to service where they replaced the system board. Def a software issue and hope they realize very soon its 100% a mfg problem. Maybe they'll release a firmware update fix in the future. About a year ago Sony pushed a firmware update that in short time destroyed my XM4 earbuds. This firmware was supposed to not go out to earlier revisions like mine because these had a completely different battery and different power management. So the app was on auto-update, the firmware gets pushed and installed, in less than a month by 300 euro buds had the batteries destroyed. My earbuds were out of warranty, but I made a claim with the Sony third party repair partner in Romania, ESD, and admittedly after a slow process they completely refunded me the whole amount I spent on them new. I was very pleased on how Sony dealt with this situation, I know it was their faulty firmware process which caused the issue, but these days, and especially out of warranty, not many companies would do that I reckon. This made me OK with buying other Sony products in the future, but seeing how this was handled I'm having second thoughts. I hope the issue will get resolve, open a claim with the manufacturer directly, explain the situation in a ticket or email and ask for escalation.

Under warranty or not - If a company or anyone does something to your camera - and 'borks' it. It's their responsiblity for correcting their mistake/damages incurred. If there is enough people that have this problem - I would say get together for a class action suit. Everyone has a reasonable expectation that the company who manufactured your camera, knows what they are doing by offering a firmware update, in that nothing would go wrong or cause damage. Again, if they mess up, it's their responsibility to clean it up and pay for the mistake.

Oh man I’m so sorry that’s happening to your camera. I had a similar issue with my Leica Q2. The camera would randomly freeze and screen would glitch out and camera became un-useable. Issues started after firmware update 5.1. Similar to your FX3 issue, lots of cases online and Leica has yet to address it. When I spoke with Leica they said it was the SD cards that caused the issue but when I told them I was using Leica recommend V90 SD cards and those same cards worked on my SL2S without issue and I told them it was a firmware bug they told me to send Q2 for repair. While they figured out what was wrong with my camera, they sent me a loaner Q2. And guess what, the loaner had zero issues because it was using older firmware. Now about a month later they’re sending my camera back and they told me they replaced the motherboard. So hopefully that resolves the issue. I really wish these companies would really test the firmware before releasing or at least acknowledge there’s an issue and pull the firmware. I hope you get your issue resolved not have to pay anything.

It's unfortunate you don't have a warranty since it's a used camera. So it make sense it would cost money to look at it and fix it, but almost 700,- is WAY too much. Ridiculous how they come up with that 'based rate'. I have had a very similar issue. Mine would go straight to system error with BT on. Also, the PAL/NTSC function stopped working, so I couldn't switch between anymore. Currently waiting almost 3 months while it's in 'repair' and no update from Sony. This is in the Netherlands though.. But be aware, it will also cost you rental for jobs you have meanwhile.

Omg, I just randomly came across this video today. No footage the whole day, I went home reformatted my cards factory reset the camera and it stopped, I haven’t messed with it since. The gimbals been sitting on my shelf for a month because I couldn’t figure out why it happened I thought my camera was broken. You bought used right, you said from a store? I hope that store offers warranty on their used project. I work in a big camera store chain in NL, and we are required to provided 6-12 month warranty on used products (so we have to check them extensively when buying back used products). The assessment/shipping fee makes sense, same here. It is weird that a firmware update supposedly “broke” something, although it might highlight an underlying hardware problem that was already lurking in the used product. I’ve talked to Sony directly when I had a problem with my A6500 IBIS back in the day (it would jerk/jolt randomly sometimes), and they took that feedback and from others and fixed it 2 firmware updates later. So as a professional who asses these things week in week out with sending things off to repair or seeing if it’s not needed. I do understand both sides here. The thing is it has to be determined first if it’s a hardware or software issue. With Sony in EU they don’t state things like “well it’s $650 minimum” more like it has to be determined first and depends on the kind of repair. Like replacing a PCB assembly usually costs €125-250.

I'm a broadcast/professional customer and I'll say that Sony support has really become poor. They wouldn't even sell me a parts diagram so I could order parts to fix the iris control on our control panels. A small gear was stripped and it would have been like $25 in parts. They wanted my to replace the entire assembly at $200+. Eventually a $1 gear from McMaster-Carr was found to fix the other two controls. This all comes from a person that has worked in the industry long enough to remember when getting full service manuals was an extra $100 at the time of purchase, or often free if you bought enough equipment. Contrast our Panasonic CX350 cameras, sent an email to my rep and had a PDF in a couple of hours. Took the errant portion apart, fixed the problem, no money out of pocket. Been a good camera so far, lenses are a little fragile but not horrible. We have 14 of these cameras that go out with students so you can image the life they lead.

I would recommend in the future if you could see if your retailer offers and extended warranty option for your used gear purchases. Usually they do and that would have certainly covered your repair. Just something to think about for the future. As for Sony breaking functionality due to firmware, unfortunately this is a problem not only with Sony. Take it from someone like me who owns, Sony, Leica and Nikon gear. The issue is that there are not as many resources available to build firmware as there are for the hardware releases. Also firmware works differently then your traditionally software application upgrades you see on a computer. Firmware typically affects hardware much more intimately and can “break” things. This is unfortunately the nature of firmware. I do agree Sony’s latest firmware roll outs have been messy and they need to clean it up but there are ways as consumers we can protect ourselves by purchasing warranties to ensure we don’t have to fit the bill when an unforeseen malfunction occurs. Not ideal but a must with used purchases. Also I signed up for Sony Pro Support which is actually quite good and something I highly recommend looking into especially if you rely on your gear for professional work.

This is ridiculous. I did have the Bluetooth issue with my A7SIII, but a shutdown and reflash seems to have taken care of it. My firmware on the A7SIII actually got hung up and stalled. It was touch and go as people were having problems with Fx3 and A7SIII and the Bluetooth problems. I haven’t had any problems with my A7IV or A7RV with firmware so far and all Bluetooth functionality has been fine.

And the real kick in the ass is that they want to start charging for firmware updates, which is already shady as hell when you can see a company that would choose to go this route holding back basic functionality in their tech that should be in it day one so they can entice you to pay for "Updates" just to get proper functions in your already expensive gear.

What I've noticed with customer service, when I feel like they're in the wrong is that it absolutely works to be more aggressive towards the issue, I noticed that earlier this year with Airbnb customer service where they were screwing me over, I didn't get a refund until I wrote them a message with some harshness and cursing, sad to say that's the case, but it has proven to me in the previous situations with customer service,.. " why the f**** should I need to pay 700$ + shipping for you guys screwing me over with a firmware update??? isn't this a "professional Cinema camera" that professionals can rely on??? " I'd start with something like that and see where it takes you

I had a similar situation with a7s3. Bluetooth stopped working after updating to fw3.0. they released a 3.01 firmware that didn't fix the issue and they then deemed it a hardware fault. Luckily i have extended warranty, (over 2.5 months waiting to get my camera back). But for those without warranty, you're shit out of luck.

Have you tried reformatting the memory cards via the camera itself after the update? I’ve had weird issues in the past solved this way. My one gripe with Sony as a professional in their ecosystem is their repair costs/service centers. I have an annual membership to their PRO support for repairs/emergency loaners in case any of my gear is damaged/malfunctioning and I have a shoot coming up and over the years I've found that most of their Sony Alpha cameras and G Master lenses have a minimum repair cost of $500~, for even the most incidental of repairs. And when we're talking about lenses around $1,100, that's a hard pill to swallow.

I have had the same issue with my A7siii. I bought it within a few months of the camera being announced. I also work for a church where I purchased an A7siii a year after its release. The church's A7siii updated just fine, my personal one experienced all the issues you are describing plus battery life is about 25% less efficient. It appears that Sony has gaslit every person who claims the firmware update caused issues with the same lies about it being a hardware problem. I'm skeptical that a firmware fix will ever be released, maybe they will do one for the FX3 but as an A7Siii owner, based on the way Sony has treated this camera in the past, I do not feel optimistic.

I have been hesitant to update to the new firmware after years of abandoning Sony A7S-iii. Now am really scared, i have updated all my Panasonic Lumix Cameras Gh5, GH5s, S1, S1H, and new S5-ii , without issues, i was using that same mindset approach to my Lonely Sony A7S-iii Camera, After hearing all these Nightmare stories and from other people as well, i think am just going to keep using it like that, i "PERSONALLY" don't see something new in the A7S-iii firmware update that I can't survive without. I used to be a phone, car and now train repair technician, my hourly billage for diag is $400. Let's say I have a board tester and Sony OEM update software. That might cost 10,000 dollars, some schooling from Sony, a nice badge and certificate. It doesn't matter if the camera just needs a battery, the reason why people call me is because the money lost is more expensive than me fixing it. One of my mentors once got flown out to a residence, put up in a hotel and asked to diagnose a home security bug. 25k and 4 hours later he found the issue the wife was turning it off to cheat.

It's been my experience sometimes large companies with multiple products & big software/hardware divisions that probably are coordinating well enough especially on things like firmware updates. Chances are Sony cuts costs and weren't as thorough on the QA pass with this camera since its been out a while & not as profitable as others. The product teams were probably told this is a small update & not much is changing so go cheap on the testing & have the teams continue to focus on the new products. Probably didn't realize what broke until customer complaints. But to be coy with owning its a firmware problem & no way to revert version back is unethical.

Hi Mate this is great you are saying this to all over the world. I had the same problem during a wedding recording. Lucky I was using A7iv too. But I didn’t go that hard way. I bought from an online seller who I can trust more than Sony store. For today 13/08/2024 it’s been over 3months and I wrote to the seller. In UK consumer law is you have 28 day to return even if you change your mind. But my seller send me a free UPS post to return the item for full money back or replacement another. This is frustrating when you didn’t get to return and you have to pay $600++ again. Good luck

My IT brain is thinking 3.5 years is enough time for there to be more than one version of the hardware, especially in respect of wireless modules. On things this small the wireless stuff is often in one chip. If they've changed that during production I can think of two possibilities. 1) the 5.0 doesn't have the right "inner firmware" for the wireless package, or 2) the 5.0 release only got tested against one varient and doesn't work with another. The classic here would be oldest build vs versus newest. Thought (2) would also apply to any other motherboard changes in the cameras. With supply chain problems since the 2020 lockdowns, I can imagine chip substitutions being more likely even in 3 years. There are common traps like this with PC motherboards & mini pcs. There might be V1, V2, V3 hardware if it's a successful product. The first two might be able to use the same firmware, but V3 will be different. Cross the streams of firmware and lose functions or completely brick the device. A couple of decades ago the worst example of this was broadband routers. Brands would have a marketing name for the product which never changed, but would literally alter the motherboard used inside and even the broadband chipsets used. It took a lot of careful steps to make sure you had the right firmware for the semi-secret version of the hardware. They'd all be called say the ADSL1200, but in real world terms there'd be about 3 different chipsets used and each of those might have a couple of minor hardware revisions. If they'd been like some manufacturers and given you an updater app that would extract the precise hardware revision and flash the right firmware it would have been a non-issue. But Nope.
