Hi Alan, love your videos, I have in fact binge watched all of them! A quick one from me … how does one, as an import agent retain their USP / relevance / necessity to the buyers? Let’s say I’m importing wine from Spain to a handful of restaurants in the UK, what’s stopping the restaurants from going directly to the source / sellers / vineyard and cutting me out the deal? Particularly if the wine company brand, logos, product information etc is displayed on the wine bottles itself? I’m sure there’s a very simple answer to this but it’s something I haven’t managed to figure out😅. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi James, I've come across this problem myself but remember, not all of your buyers will have the time or knowledge on how to import cases of wine themselves and need you to take of this for them. They're busy running their restaurants. As a quick tip, in the past, I've approached vineyards and asked them label the wine showing my company as the UK importer, with no mention of their name/address. They agreed and this helps hide the contact details somewhat. It would be worth asking your suppliers the same. Of course, if you have a soul agency agreement with the vineyard, that through a "circumvention clause" in the contract, goes a great way in stopping the buyer going directly to the producer. Overall in my experience, your buyers are busy running their businesses and are happy to let you handle the import of products and take your commission. I hope this helps reassure somewhat.

Hello Alan a little help needed, a couple of colleagues and i are starting a freight forwarding business but have hit a huge roadblock in the IATA CASS registration. IATA requires a sponsorship letter from a GSSA or an airline inorder to get the İATA CASS number, but airlines or GSSAs won't work with you unless you have an İATA CASS number. I am struggling to understand how am i supposed to register under these conditions. Please assist with suggestions with a way forward.

Hello Kobi Rae, thanks for the comment and sorry for the delay. I'm slightly confused. You don't join IATA unless you are an airline. A freight forwarder becomes involved with IATA when they approach an IATA airline or their agent for IATA freight rates. In the world of consolidation, very few freight forwarders use IATA rates as they are heavily discounted through a consolidator. I don't know the country you're based in but it's possible that the rules are different. I'm talking from a UK perspective. We cover IATA and consolidated rates in our online course if you're interested in learning more: www.abtslogistics.co.uk/full-syllabus/

Hi Ms Lovina88, thanks for your comment. Please feel free to contact us on support@abtslogistics.co.uk and we can let you know about enrolling in our courses. As for your question about clearing agents, the simplest way to find one for yourself is to use Google and search for "clearing agent in ". A clearing agent will help you clear your goods through customs. I hope this helps.
