Interesting video and nicely done. Couple things to mention. You see the fixed reticle through the left collimator lens and the moving one through the right lens, which are spaced to match your eyes. Because the images are at infinity, you see them superimposed over each other apparently out in space and the sight head itself is actually a double image in your vision. But of course the game can't replicate that. Pilots resisted using the gyro sight when it first came out because it took some time to master but once they figured it out it was known as the "Ace Maker". The biggest advantage to using it was it allowed you to do away with tracer ammo. This is a huge tactical advantage when your target doesn't get a warning from tracer passing him when you start shooting and pilots really warmed up to it once this was realized. Watch WWII gun camera footage and a lot of films show shooting without tracer. This tells you they are using a gyro sight. The game needs to have the option to delete tracer in the ammo loadout.

Very nice video. I can really see now why Johnny Johnson who was RAF top scorer took the gyro sight out of his personal spit and kept the older style reflector sight! (He claimed it needed him to spend "too much time with my head in the office and not enough looking for danger"). I think I'll stick with Hartmanns method and just get stupid close!

very iformatinve thx! so i understand that the "easy" way to guess the range is to simply match the wingspan to the diamond (easier than i thought)
@skylordbob32376 жыл бұрын
Crainshaw83 Yes is that "easy". Inner circle of diamonds must match to wingspan of the target. If target is not in "perfect" position ring must be little bigger. This sound very complicated to do in real combat but I need to emphasize that we must never forget that this gyro sight was designed and assembled 80 years ago and man, these men have my respect! Thx for comment m8! ;)

Well done. Some kind of "HOTAS" setup where the range control does not require going to the keyboard would be an improvement. They could have set more useful "default" settings. (I wonder whether the default wingspan is an He 111 - not on the list.) Radar-assisted ranging (as with the F-86 Sabre) would be even better, but we can't get there from here.
@skylordbob32376 жыл бұрын
Wingspan of He 111 is 22.60 m (74 ft 2 in) ! Thx for comment! :)

The sight was a step in the right direction but in it's basic early form it seems to rob the pilot of intuitive aiming, there were so many times during the fight where you used the basic sight as a reference and fired instead of waiting for the gyro reticle to appear.
@skylordbob32376 жыл бұрын
Yea, I entirely agree with you. Gyro aiming demands plenty of skill, intuition and practice! I`m assured that in real combat situation most of the aiming was done over fixed reticle. Thx for comment! :D

@@skylordbob3237 The gyro sight also requires the correct use case scenario. The gyro sight produces accurate values if both aircraft have about the same turn rate and airspeed, range is more or less constant, and neither aircraft are constantly changing their flight paths relative to each other. In other situations the gyro sight can't work because it can't see into the future... it can just extrapolate based on present parametres. Therefore I would say the best use for the gyro sight is when you're attacking larger aircraft from longer range, or sneaking up on an enemy aircraft which is unaware of you and going through a constant rate turn - that way you can use they gyro to confirm your firing solution and maximize the effectiveness of your first burst of gunfire. In actual maneuvering dogfight, I think the fixed gun sight has better results.

@@HerraTohtori Yes, You are entirely right. My goal in this video was to explain gunsight as simple as possible. Thank you for such detail explanation. ;D

there were 2 recticles on these sights ,1 left ,1 right,whats going on?
@skylordbob32376 жыл бұрын
??? I am not sure that I understand you question correctly, but I will answer you like this: -There were two reticles on this sights. Fixed and Gyro. But they were not left and right. It was Fixed + Gyro configuration and in this case they were overlapping. Fixed was always "fixed" in the middle of the reflector plate and Gyro was loose to move around for correct target tracking. It is default Gyro gunsight configuration.The pilot had also choise to use only Gyro or only Fixed reticle. This is probably not the answer that you are look for. But you are really confuse me with "left"-"right" part. Sorry :/ But hey, thx for watching and comment! ;)
@skidzholeshot13166 жыл бұрын
thats not what i meant,what mean is there are 2 sights on these gunsights 2,1 on the left of the sight and one on the right 2 sights having all the same mechanics of one.
@virusrat71456 жыл бұрын
the left reticle reflected the fixed, and the right one reflected the gyroscopic. it couldn't reflect both through one part while keeping the ability to disable certain reticles. you can see how the fixed one slightly fades out if it budges too far right, while the gyroscopic sight stays the same because of the mirror the original reticle reflects on to give it the ability to move around. it also depends on where the pilot has their head. keep in mind most of this is just speculation and based on some diagrams of the k-14, not the mark iib, so take it with a grain of salt
@skidzholeshot13166 жыл бұрын
good explaination.and you could also use one sight for ground attack.
@virusrat71456 жыл бұрын
that's mostly what the fixed sight was for. i'm pretty sure the secondary dot with the two lines on the k-14 (P-51D's ggs) was to give an estimate as to where their rockets would land, while bombs were mostly to the pilot's own skill
