I work at a doggy daycare. When random numbers call me when I’m at work I hold my phone up to a barking dog.

I think the famous wrong number encounter is the US Thanksgiving one. The grandmother texted a wrong number regarding if so and so is coming to dinner and the guy responded back saying it was a wrong number but asked if the invitation is still valid. Long story short, they became like family and kept in touch with each other over the years, celebrating life’s milestones together, mourning loved ones passings, and still doing Thanksgiving together

Heard of someone who has a disconnected landline but still gets calls from telemarketers. The lady who owns it often answers "County Morgue and Pizzeria, where yesterday's loss is today's sauce! How can I help you?"

One more! I can do a spot-on impression of Rodney Dangerfield. So one day, a day or two after it had been announced that Dangerfield had died, I get a call from my best friend who lives 1000 miles away- from his cell phone. The phone kept fading in and out, and finally on one of the fade-outs, I hear this girl's voice. Apparently the signals had gotten crossed or something. She's saying "Hello? Who is this?" to which I reply in my Dangerfield voice: "Oooo, hey, I'll tell ya...this is Rodney. Hey, get me outta this place! It's hot in here and I get no respect!". Before I could hear her response, the phone faded again, and then my friend reappeared. I told him what had happened and he cracked up. (He used to make me do Dangerfield practically every time he'd call)

Got a drunk phone call from then Vice president Gore. In all fairness my parents land line was like one number off from a certain local politician's number so that's who he was trying to call.

I had just finished vacuuming and mopping all my floors. About 10 minutes later my phone rang. Me: "Hello?" Caller: " . . . . . . . . Is this the dump?" My other story isn't mine, but happened to a friend's friend. This man worked in the office of a cemetery, and one day the phone rang. Cemetary worker: "Hello, (name of cemetary)." Caller; "I'm ready, you can come and get me." (Apparently a woman was trying to reach her husband to pick her up)

Pre cell phone days my dad picked up the phone talked to someone then just handed it to me, I said hello a woman on the phone said my name i said yes that's me, she paused a moment asked my age i said 7 and she hung up. My dad later told me she had been calling for days insisting i was her husband and demanding to speak to me. To this day i have no idea who she was or how she got our number.

I told the debt collectors that I would be contacting my lawyer. That pretty much put a stop to those calls. My lawyer was disappointed.

I texted what I thought was my husband's number saying sweet stuff like "Love you" and "I love you so very much" for two days until I got a message saying "Hey this is *child who goes to my daughters classes mom* I think you have the wrong number." I apologized and have never wanted to die as badly as I did that day.

Back when I had just gotten my first phone. My mom and sister were members of a group that provided first aid services for events and such. They were helping out with first aid at a fair about an hour away and I tagged along. Well, they had to leave quite early so once we arrived I took a nap in the car. Mid nap my phone rings and I answer and immediately after uttering a drowsy "hello?" the older lady on the other end starts chattering (can't remember what about anymore lol) and won't let me get a word in. FINALLY she pauses long enough for me to tell her she's got the wrong, but then she asks who I am and for whatever reason I tell her my name. Well, apparently she knew someone with my name (not a super common name) and starts up again. I managed to interrupt her sooner this time though and once I told her again she had the wrong number we shared a laugh as she told me her grandson's girlfriend and I shared a name. My best wrong number call to date, now I just get spammy ones XD

I got a call once from a bill collector asking for my POS scamming deadbeat sister (Since our last names are the same, I assume he had looked up her name and called the only number with that last name, which would be me). When the collector asked for my sister, I told her that she doesn't live here...then I gave him her number!

I have two. 1) Whoever had my number before me was named Judith. Judith is in serious tax debt. I get weekly-monthly messages, either from tax relief or the government wanting Judith to pay up. I have also been informed by political texts that Judith was a democrat. 2) Once got an unknown number call. I like to annoy scammers, so I immediately picked up with, "ROADKILL GRILL! You kill it, we grill it!" I heard a confused male voice on the other end, "Dang. She gave me the wrong number."

For a few years I would randomly get a voice mail message from some elderly woman who lived in an East Coast state. I live in California. She always asked for some woman's name and kept wondering why she hadn't heard from her in a while. I had the same cell number for just over 10 years at this point. Haven't received one for about 5 years, so I'm thinking she probably passed away.

I received a message for someone who had my middle name. I rarely use my middle name so had no reason to believe that it was for me. Thought I’d be a nice guy and returned the call so they’d know they’d misdialed. Turns out they hadn’t. It was a potential employer who had my info but for some reason had misread the application and used my middle name. Ended up getting the job which never would have happened had I ignored a wrong number!

A friend called, told me that she had just called, but must of misdialed as she got a man on the phone (I am female). She asked if I was there, used my first + last name (I don't have a common first or last name in fact in the city I live in, which has 6 million people, only 7 have my last name). He said that was his name but he didn't know her. She was too shocked to ask anything more, said sorry + hung up. So this man has the same first + last name as me + his phone # is only one digit different than mine. She said his voice was very low + sexy. LOL. 😄

Back in the days before cell phones I got a phone number where the digits were the same as another but 2 were reversed (eg 9829 vs 9289) and unfortunately for me and many drunk people whose cars broke down late at night, the other number belonged to the only local tow truck service. Had to turn the ringer off at night and left a voicemail message that started with "This is NOT XYZ tow company. " Even then I often got angry messages about why hasn't my tow truck arrived yet...

My parents’ home phone number used to be the same as the 1-800 number for the IRS. Of course, theirs had a local area code but people would always try to call the IRS without typing in the 1-800. They didn’t keep that phone number very long.

I’m still being contacted by all sorts of people, searching for X. I have had this number since Christmas Eve 2014. I just tell that exact thing to everyone. Well do you know his new number. No, I don’t know the fella, and you can’t be that important if you haven’t reached out to him in 10 years.

Set in the era of landlines: I answer the phone and an apologetic woman says, “Matt, it’s Ashley. Don’t talk. You said you wanted me to take responsibility for my actions so here goes…..” She proceeded to apologize about a bunch of things. I let her finish because she seemed sincere, at least to me, and it seemed to help her conscience be more at ease the longer she spoke. At the end of it all, I played it off like it was a crazy coincidence and I *DID* have an ex girlfriend named Ashley and that my name is Mateo (Spanish equivalent). I don’t think she bought that but in the end it didn’t matter to her. She was working on the 12 Steps (associated with recovery) and was truly trying to make amends.

This was a decade ago and I had hair down to my mid-back. I'm quite securely male, mustache, full beard. I'm on my bike, waiting to cross the street, and this guy in a low-rider pulls up. "Hey baby girl, let me holler at you." I'm facing away from him, so I slowly turn toward him and go "Who are you calling 'baby girl'?!" Just then, the light turned green. I have never seen that much rubber being peeled before or since.

A (small) part of my job is providing user support for a very specialized system we develop and manage. Not something a typical everyday person would use. One day a month or two ago we got a call to our help desk. It was an older lady asking us to help her figure out “how to watch the TV show Lucifer”. That was an odd one for sure.

I had a new phone number . I received a call from the same area code . 912., South Georgia . I'm curious and ask what's the city you are calling from . The woman names a small city , not from where i had been living . So I told her what city I had lived in . She says she had just moved from the same place and just got a new phone and number , I told her my name , and she told me she knew me . I knew her as well . Both of us had moved to a different place and had new phone numbers . What are the odds ?

My brother's work number is only one digit different from my home number. I've had two separate phone calls from people believing they are speaking to my brother's place of work, even though he works more than twenty miles from where I live. It's a bizarre coincidence.

Several years ago when we still had a landline I answered a call. Hello, nana? I replied hello sweetheart and heard all about Christmas from two excited little ones. When they finished I asked to speak to mommy. I told her I was the wrong nana, but they were so excited, I couldn’t bear to interrupt/

When I was a year old, I somehow dialed 911 with a cordless phone that I got a hold of. The cops showed up because there was an open line. Also my much younger little brother did something with Mom's cell phone years later that resulted in Mom getting a nasty call from a lady who then accused her of being the one her husband was cheating on her with.

One night a guy rang me three times asking for Helene. Each time I tell him no Helene lives here. Last time he asks if this is X suburb. No it isn't. Later I check the three figure prefix for X phone numbers and see it's the same as mine but has 8 where mine has 3. I guess he's reading from a note where the 8 looks like a 3. I ring my own number using the 8 prefix and find Helene. I explain and she says she knows who is calling. Hope they hooked up and lived happily ever after care of a random stranger in the night.
