It's quite refreshing to hear Billy Joe Saunders being honest & frank about things. I admit, I feared for him when he was constantly getting in to trouble for doing stupid things & also the trouble he had with other travelers a couple of years back. He is a tremendously talented boxer & could have achieved much more than he has, which is great shame. I hope we see him back soon & I really hope he get's a shot at fighting a big name, earning a decent payday & showing people how great a boxer he really is before father time catches up with him. Even though he did these stupid things, as a boxer I was always a big fan of his & like myself, I did stupid things when I was "young & dumb", but we can all change. Good luck to you BJS!
@mg355411 ай бұрын
Good post mate and I agree with most of it, but I kind of disagree with you on he could have done more than he has. I think 2 time world champ beating the levels he did was an unbelievable achievement and was exactly his level. He was ahead of all the British talent and European talent. He made the step up and although he was doing brilliant and although he thinks himself he was on a level with Canelo. I think Canellos level was just that one step too far for Billy Joe. Where do you think he could of done better mate and against who do you think he could of done better
@Blakeness8411 ай бұрын
@@mg3554 Thanks mate. Yes, I agree when you say he wasn't on Canelo's level. I too, didn't believe he was going to beat Canelo. I was hoping he would, as a fellow Brit, but realistically I thought Canelo would be too much for him. Where I think he could have done better is keeping himself in shape in between fights, he was known for putting on weight when not active. I think the best boxers stay in shape & stay in the gym most of the time. Look at the Eubank Jr fight, he let Jr back in to it in the 2nd half of the fight because he gassed out. Compare that to the Lemieux fight, arguably his best performance, he was in tip top condition & put on a clinic as he had plenty in the tank. He looked terrible at times against Coceres, mainly because he left it late to go over to the US in preparation & looked so relieved to have stopped him late on. He also had a few long periods of inactivity. His resume could have been better, had he have taken on fighters like Andrade, Golovkin & Jacobs. I know he was really close to fighting Andrade & Golovkin, but they never happened. Jacobs was in his division at the time too, that would have been a great fight. Would he have beaten those 3? I think the Andrade would have been a tough fight for him but 1 he could win, Golovkin was still in his prime at that time which I think would have been a step too far & Jacobs would have caused him problems but definitely a good chance of winning. There are a few good names on his resume, but there could have been more. I know boxing politics comes in to it, but when you look at his record there's a lot of soft title fights against lesser known fighters & fighters at the tail end of their careers. Maybe you're right when you say that what he did achieve was exactly his level, but I guess we'll never truly know. Great comment though & we all have our opinions.
@mg355411 ай бұрын
@Blakeness84 that's a good point, that he didn't get to the level he could have got to within himself. That we could have seen more that way. I was kind of only thinking that what he did make of himself, he was only capable of beating who he did and reached his level. If he had more application towards to sport, you're definitely right. Jacobs and Andrade would have been great fights. The Andrade fight is obviously a massive stain on his record, maybe he didn't fancy himself against him. That or he was juicing all the time. It definitely left question marks over him. That fight or the Jacobs one that could still happen would have been great additions to his record. It would be good to see him get that fight next year. Two of them are past their primes but a good show at the same time.
@Blakeness8411 ай бұрын
@@mg3554 Yes, he definitely could have applied himself more. Like you said in your 1st comment, he was a real British talent. He was tipped to win a gold medal at the Olympics, until bad behaviour got him thrown off the team, another thing that has stained his career. I think he could have definitely done more in the pro game, but it'll be great to see him come back. Boxing needs characters like Billy Joe & he has a fan pleasing style when he's at his best. I definitely agree with you on the Andrade fight, Billy Joe didn't fancy it for whatever reason. Andrade was massively avoided by a lot of fighters, which is a shame as he's another fighter who could have achieved much more. He didn't look great against Liam Williams a couple of years ago & was always expected to beat Jason Quigley as convincingly as he did. I didn't see his last fight, but I think Benavidez will definitely take his 0. Jacobs was a great fighter & what a comeback after beating cancer. It's a shame all 3 are coming to the tail end of their careers, but with that being said, still makes those fights great to see. I must say, it's also nice to be replying to someone who knows what they're talking about & not a hater/troll for a change! Great comments bro.

really enjoyed this, i do think for the talent billy has, for me he underachieved a bit. he's still had a good career, but you just feel he could have done more. hope he comes back and does well.

Great Boxer , very good , but i think Canelo played with Billy for the early rounds.Billy would make a superb pundit like Spencer Oliver.

This interview changed my mind in how I felt about Billy as a person. I didn’t think he would have any regrets about the negative situations he put himself into. He’s a pretty decent bloke and I have noticed other boxers like him a lot.

Not to mention the fact he literally would drive round in his Range Rover and deliberately run over people's pets if he ever saw them in the street. Such a lovely fella.

Brilliant interview. I always find it sad watching Billy talk about his career & life though. The fact that we all see him as somewhat of a wasted talent, despite being a 2 weight world champ, tells you just how talented he is. He could have been one of Britain's greats imo

100% agreed mate, he was surrounded by total clowns at his peak, loved watching him, serious talent gone to waste.

All 3 Judges has Canelo WAY up at the point of the stoppage. Billy Joes trainer Mark Tibbs is on record saying Billy Joe himself went into that fight knowing he couldnt win. Canelo is on another level to these world class Super Middleweights hes an all time great.
@whatajoke971111 ай бұрын
Didn’t Tibbs also say he was the one that made the decision to throw the towel in. I personally wouldn’t believe all what tibbs says
