My Suggested Upgrades: Shimano Hydraulic Levers and Calipers: amzn.to/2MDI8fr OUTAD Handlebar, 31.8mm720mm, Aluminum Alloy Riser : amzn.to/2N6VnEP (I used a Forte 720 Flat Bar in this video) Crank Brothers Doubleshot Hybrid Pedals: amzn.to/2MZcGrF (I initially used CB Mallets for this video, but ultimately changed to hybrids) What will you buy? Let me know how you like the suggestions.

Bought mine 4 years ago. The only thing I changed was the stem and pedals. I went flat pedals hate any type of clips! I bought mine for winter riding. So I still have cable disc brakes. When it comes to cold winter rides no hydro brakes. Cable always works!

Very well done video. I concidered this bike when I bought my fatty but wound up going with the Motobecane Boris with front suspension. The cool thing is these bikes are very upgradable without spending a fortune.

The biggest bang for your buck will be a wider handlebar (new stem, required too). The rest can wait.... Pedals next, a cheap set of flats is all you'll need. Good luck!

@@devinderbahy4584 I went with the ec 90 neck and bar! All carbon fiber! The neck is a 6 inch angle and 100 length! the bars are straight I think they are 29 inch long! Might want to get them a little shorter if your going to be riding in tight areas but over all it’s a good set up and they look great! No cons really excepts the length of the bars! I would definitely recommend them. Not to expensive either ! 👍🏽

Nice video. I did some similar upgrades. I also went with Shimano Hydraulic brakes, but the MT200. With the 20" bike, and me being 6'2 and 200lbs, the Tektro brakes were too dangerous; very noisy and ineffective. The only thing is the 1500mm hose that comes with the Shimano is too long. I had to use some zip ties. I also put on a 720m flat handlebar, 90mm stem, and large stamp pedals.

I just bought a Monster5, price is up significantly in 4 years, as expected. Haven’t got a lot of miles on it yet, but those disc brakes are spongier than my old GT Karakoram (how does autocorrect know that!!!) rim brakes from 1993…

I disagree with the comments on the mech disc brakes. I've ridden mine on singletrack and heavy city traffic and never had a problem braking. I use two fingers bit that is the norm for me coming from rim brakes. I just don't trust hydrolics I hear when they don't work it can be pretty hairy!

Both my bottom bracket and front derailleur are still going strong. I suspected that I'd be replacing them quickly, but no. When I do, I will probably go to an oval with an obnoxious cassette to match.

I know I'm late to the game here, but my Monster is coming in Monday. I was thinking about doing the hydraulic brake upgrade, but was wondering how difficult it was to run the lines. I have never wrenched on a bike much, will I be able to run them through the frame attachments without cutting off the ends? Or will I need some sort of aftermarket frame attachment for them? I've already got a new 720mm bar and shorter stem on the way. thanks for the videos, not much else out there on the GBM.
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 4 жыл бұрын
DO IT! Did you watch my video on the brake test? There is a short clip that shows removing the calipers. It's really as simple as that. Running the lines was very simple, but you'll need a couple of small zip ties to run through the loops on the frame. I chose to take a dremel tool to the loops on the top tube, to widen them a little, but you don't have to be that brave (zip ties...) The hydraulic brake upgrade was my favorite. Huge bang for the buck! Good Luck.

@@darwinrides1688 Hi just bough this bike and wanted to upgrade to hydraulics as well. Are all kits pretty much universal in terms of mounting? I see the Shimano BR-BL-M355 Hydraulic Disc Bike but also see a M365 which is more available. Thanks
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 4 жыл бұрын
@@rhodeislandfirearmsownersl9916 The vast majority of kits will fit universally. The question-mark comes with the length of the hydraulic lines. Mine were barely long enough on the rear (XL Frame). Good luck. This is an awesome upgrade!
@briancustoms
@briancustoms 3 жыл бұрын
@@darwinrides1688 I'm about to purchase an XL myself. My budget will only allow the Zoom hydraulic disk brake set. They are 800mm hose length front, and 1400mm rear. Do you know if those lengths will be sufficient?
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 3 жыл бұрын
@@briancustoms The Front is no problem. The rear is just barely enough. You will also need to widen the openings on the aluminum loops on the frame. This is very easy, perhaps too easy. Be careful not to open them up too much or the hose will keep falling out (hot glue will work wonders if you overdo it).

I replaced the stock 130mm steel stem with a 100mm x 31.8mm stem. The stock handlebar has an odd diameter, so if you replace the stem, you'll need a new bar too (and visa-versa, obviously).
@tztuttle1
@tztuttle1 5 жыл бұрын
Darwin Rides I got the 31.8 as well. Your video really helped narrow down what I wanted to do with my Gravity. I’ll have to show you what I’ve done to upgrade the rig. I recently upgraded the drivetrain, brakes, and other components of my trail bike and brought the “old” bits(Deore drivetrain) over to the fat bike. I went a little wider with the bars at a healthy 780 mm. I should have it finished by the end of the week. Thanks for the info in your video. Also, would you ever consider suspension, or do you feel the geometry renders a suspension fork impractical?
@darwinrides1688
@darwinrides1688 5 жыл бұрын
@@tztuttle1 I was considering adding an inexpensive fork, but the more I ride it, the more I find that I adapt my riding style to accommodate. Also, I suspect that the wrong combination of suspension and tire pressure could be quite hazardous. However, this might make the foundation of an interesting video...?
