Mat! Brother, I love this video. I have the four string version of this bass, and I’ve gotten so many miles out of it. I love the fact that affordable gear sounds so good, and you sold me on making a few upgrades to my current four string. Considering the five string version as well so you have me sold there as well. Cheers my friend and well done
@rathoquarter3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind, generous words, Nick. Its always hugely appreciated. Yeah, I've been thinking about doing an upgrade like this for ages and finally decided to just go for it: the bridge honestly kind of blew me away. I really didn't think it would make as much difference as it has, but as soon as pay day rolls around again I will be placing an order for a similar bridge for my 4 string P bass and a hipshot bridge for my cheapie 7 string.
@SixxAxxiS2 жыл бұрын
@@rathoquarter I too have the 4 string version, and had already put in the same type of new Hipshot bridge, and it was so noticable how well it improved the intonation and my playing. I actually found this video after considering getting a 5 string version, and now I'm also considering getting the 4 string version of these pups, too! Has that Billy Gould (Faith No More) tone to it that I love.

Cool! I took basically the same bass and went a bit buck wild. Changed out all the electronics, as it had the 4 knob setup which I hated. (Separate V&T for each PU and side Jack) and went 3 knob. Routed and installed a big Musicman bucker in the bridge position. Refretted it with stainless steel frets, and a stainless steel nut. (Huge amount of work there) After filling the old Jack hole, painted it with gold base, heavy gold flake, topped off with a voodoo violet purple candy, with a white pearl pick guard to make it pop, and viola!!! Old girl runs like a race car, and sexy to boot.🤘🏻

Great work and sound. I got a Hipshot KIckass bridge and Ultralite tuners from a trade a while ago. The holes lined up. I put EMG JAX5 on mine. It is definitely easier to tune the B and E with the new bridge and tuners. I also do not get irritation on my right hand because I palm mute a lot and the stock height adjusters were in the way. I also have a white bass and the black hipshot hardware matched the black pickguard, so I ended up with a black and white theme. This my only 5 string bass from "Fender". I was pleasantly surprised even before the EMG. I had to route a battery hole and my friend got me some nice aluminum cover plate. I like wider string spacing so I increased mine a smidge. I think the spacing is 18.5mm stock not 19.
@rathoquarter Жыл бұрын
Yeah your mod sounds gorgeous! Especially the colour scheme. I need to add new tuners to mine too. I also have a squier 4 string P bass which I love that might be getting a similar treatment soon. Thanks for the comment, friend!

One advice I’d give to anyone who wants to buy an Squier bass/guitar is that the neck in both is slimmer than in MIM Fender... inho, a thicker neck gives more resonance... So if you’d do the same upgrade, I might recommend to do it on a MIM Fender.

Thank you so much, friend! Yeah putting these videos together can be quite a lot of work but I do enjoy the process. I just wish I could generate them a little more quickly, but I have to work around my full time job (which pays for the musical gear and photography equipment to be fair, so I'm not complaining!) Really exciting that this has inspired you to mod your bass too! I strongly encourage this! I don't know if you have felt equally less enthusiastic about the bass initially but these mods have really breathed new life into the instrument for me. I spent a lot of time looking at far more expensive alternatives and thought about selling this Squier but now I feel like I have a really cool bass that has a little bit of a unique character to it. I have absolutely no intention of selling it now. Please let me know how you get on with your mods in the future. Thanks very much for the interest and the comment. Much appreciated!

I use a pick when I play bass because it sounds different to the fingerstyle approach. I find the tone I get when using a pick to be far preferable for the kind of music I enjoy and the kind of music I make. Furthermore most of the bass players I admire use a pick. If a song has passages that a calmer and more delicate, I will very often switch to fingerstyle if it sound appropriate to my ears. For what it's worth, I also do play guitar. Regularly.
