I always liked how older versions of windows allowed you to customize the colors of so many parts of the UI. To do that on Windows 10 you gotta go into high contrast mode, and even then you gotta edit your saved theme file in a text editor to change titlebar colors because high contrast mode doesn't let you do that through the settings panel. Must be an oversight. One of my themes is based off the Fallout 3 Pipboy.

It's good for testing old software, that don't run natively on Windows 10 anymore. If I do recall, Vista was extremely bad when trying to upgrade from XP. I had to ton of problems with Vista on my PC back in the day, both during install as well as just using Vista, so much so I downgraded by main PC back to XP and just ran Vista on a laptop for general usage. I only upgraded the XP PC when 7 came out. Might be an idea, but try installing XP SP 3 first then Vista. I know SP3 came out after Vista released, but it may include additional drivers and fixes that may get the Vista upgrade to work. I could be entirely wrong, but there's nothing to lose (unless the upgrade to SP3 decides to nuke your HDD first).

Hi Michael. I remember doing these upgrades, but not all at once, rather as the new OS became available. The problem that I believe that you're having here to upgrade to Windows Vista was a very common but specific problem regarding Vista. Windows Vista required several hardware changes that I don't think your Gateway computer would have. In fact, the last hardware upgrades that I am aware of for Gateway stopped at Windows 2000, but were not essential, so your build simply bypassed them as you upgraded through Windows XP. One other specific issue with Vista was that if you had hardware attached, i.e. a printer, it had to be a printer designed SPECIFICALLY to handle Windows Vista, otherwise it wouldn't work. I had to buy a brand new printer (my wife, at the time, was not pleased with that) so that I could print off the Vista box.

Ah Windows 2000. I miss that operating system. Other than the constant service pack patches, it was probably among Microsoft's best operating systems. Also, I think Vista was actually a pretty good OS, everybody shits on it but if you bought a machine intended for it and had hardware that was compatible out of the box, it was perfectly serviceable. What killed it was the incompatibility of hardware and software with XP, but everyone forgets XP was just as incompatible with ME when it was first released, but we just got so used to XP just working with everything, I think people got spoiled.
@tready20083 жыл бұрын
Michael I think the issue of not being able to go to vista was the HDD size, Your partition you set way back at the start was only 2GB and at 36:37 its still that after the upgrade to 2000, With 690MB free I was surprised that XP was able to install but vista is never going to fit on to that size. If you ever try this again make sure your HDD size is big enough. You think Microsoft could put the most basic error message and say it failed due to lack of space or check that first!

To be quite honest, you could try to brut force installation with the cmd during installation. Hard copy the files onto the file system replacing everything onto winNT folder, so you could keep your directory as well. During GUI installer, shift f10 brings up the command prompt. After that just flash the windows via DISM /apply-image and create an MBR manually using regedit in sources - i did that with windows 10, but i am not sure if vista can do that. You could also try doing a second partition and try installing vista there, afterward just merging vista files with live linux.

6:18 So the installer itself was not running a proper Windows NT kernel, but some kind of cut-down kernel without full filesystem support. Compare Linux installers, where booting off the install media gives you a full running Linux OS.

An idea that would almost require doing a repeat of this video, make a backup copy of the winnt folder before each upgrade, and try to launch older versions of the programs from that folder to see if they still work.

28:36 - little nitpicking. You do not need a "more poweful computer" to show mentioned effect smoothly. You need videocard drivers installed and in case of NT 4 - since you PC obviously has AGP videocard - at least NT SP3 which enables AGP support and thus makes possible to install videocard drivers. Well they will install without SP3 but APG ones will not activate. If your PC has PCI videocard, SP is irrelevant but you need to install drivers anyway. Regarding Vista - i wonder which version you tried to install - without SP or SP1 or SP2?

The upgrade issue for Vista was probably because you were running the installer from inside XP instead of booting from the disc and choosing upgrade. It was 100% NOT because of the Windows folder name, you can install Windows in a folder called macOS if you want, it doesn't care. My best guess is it was the profile folder causing the issue, because you ran the installer over Windows XP explorer would still be running in the background and if Vista was trying to fix the folder structure it would be getting file in use errors from your account folder (as you're logged in), booting from the disc would stop this problem from happening. Note it wasn't clear if you got that error before a reboot happened or afterwards, if it was after a reboot then my theory is wrong.

Except I don't think you can upgrade the OS if you boot from the CD (at least you can't in modern versions of windows)

I most likely know your answer to this already, But have you considered getting a used or refurbished computer from around 2010-2011? I think this would be better if you have some software from around that time that for some reason doesn't work on newer computers. Again, I highly doubt that you will actually try getting one of these but it is just a suggestion.

@Gill Bates I know that the $5 Windows 98 PC is for fun and I have no hatred against anyone who wants to relive the late 1990's-early 2000's. I don't know what made me suggest what I suggested above, But i actually enjoy the $5 Windows 98 PC and the upgrades that it received,

The error is caused by you having Windows installed in the WinNT folder instead of a Windows folder. I had this problem on an old laptop that had Windows XP installed in a Custom Folder. You have to boot the computer in Safe Mode and change the name of the WinNT Folder to Windows.

32:40 I can remember, when Windows 2000 was launched, a very senior Microsoft executive, either Ballmer or Gates, admit that Windows NT 4 typically only had an uptime of 3 days before crashing. Windows 2000, on the other hand, could run for a month between crashes.
