Great video as always. On my old ebike I did have carbon wheelset and they were great. Cheaper Chinese carbon. Now on my trek Rail I had custom wheelset made. Spank 359 vibrocore rims with industry 9 hydra hubs. Wheels are amazing. Instant Engagement strong and the spank vibrocore really works. I think this might be the best set of wheels I have owned. I also run a foam insert in back wheel.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thats a great combination, foam insert is always a good idea if your an adventurous rider.

I always go with dt swiss, stable, reliable, perfect fit mit maxxis tyres and no problems with tubeless Installation. My trek rail came with bontrager wheels, pretty sturdy wheels but a pain in the ass to get a proper tyre like a maxxis assegai double down onto. Broke 3 Park Tool levers, bent one rim slightly. My Canyon came with race face wheels, pretty good with quick hub engagement, but tyre wouldn't inflate without a booster pump or co2. Only thing i have to say, after one year of use the dt swiss star rachet began to make problems, it started to skip/slip. After checking i saw that a lot of teeth were broken.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic3 жыл бұрын
DT Swiss are normally bomb proof if serviced, I hope they replaced it for you.
@michael_the_chef3 жыл бұрын
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic i guess i did put to much grease into them, they got stuck and because of pedal kickback they got damaged. The 54 tooth are pretty delicate, for now i am running stock 18 tooth, but the engagement sucks 😂 gonna get a new 54t ratchet kit and will use a lighter grease and much less. So far i have ridden reynolds (carbon), race face (alloy), bontrager (alloy) and dt swiss (alloy). Dt swiss is by far the best wheel for me to this day, especially mounting heavier tyres (downhill, super gravity double down....) is pretty easy and tyres inflate with a floor pump 9 out of 10 times.

Double check the measurement from the end of the end cap to the rotor mounts. Supposed to be an industry standard but, it varies with some 'big' brands

Try pillar triple battered spokes 👌🏻
@GNX1572 жыл бұрын
Another check to make is spoke/nipple thread engagement. Probably most important on cheaper budget wheels, but you want to look down into the wheel (under the rim strip) and look at the underside of the nipple and spot the spoke to be close to or flush with the bottom of the nipple. Not enough thread engagement risks them pulling out.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the ideal position for the spoke end is approx 1mm from the top of the nipple when at the correct spoke tension.
@adamsmythe70703 жыл бұрын
Hope pro 4 hubs bullet proof the engagement could be better DT swiss hubs are good which give you the option to upgrade the rackets fit better engagement. At the minute I am riding with industry nine 305 enduro wheels with hydra hubs the engagement is next level

very helpful video thanks .....would be grateful for a bit of info DT SWISS 481 it sez they are 29'' / 700c thats confusing as i assumed mountain bike rims and 700c gravel / touring would be different . thanks
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comments, I can understand why its confusing. A 700 rim is more or less the same size, a 29er is referred to as the outer tyre measurement, you could put a 29er tyre on a 700 rim but not on a road bike application, a 700c tyre would be needed for that.
@lweleven34232 жыл бұрын
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic many thanks so the DT Swiss 481 rim can be used for a mountain bike or say Gravel bike . When I looked on there web site I was a little confused as I always thought the rims would be slightly different for each . Your videos are helpful and , as and when I need some wheels i now know where you are . Many thanks 👍

@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, i9 hubs are a clever piece of engineering, the hubs are easy to service, one of the bearings can be difficult to obtain unless you go the shore-lines directly. enduro 30x15x7 LLB. The engagement has over 600 points of engagement, 6 pawls and springs, good choice of colour and spec. not cheap but a well designed and engineered hub.

Hi. Really enjoyed the video. I’m thinking of upgrading the wheels on my Gen 3 Levo Expert. The rear wheel is already out of true after 350 miles & I suspect the 28 spoke Roval alloy wheels are out of their depth. I ride mainly at Hamsterley (off piste)& Guisborough , weigh 90kg & consider myself a relatively aggressive rider. I was thinking about a set of DT Swiss 350 hubs on a EX511 32 spoke rim. Would this be strong enough for a full fat Ebike? I’m also very interested in the Silt AM factory built wheels, which have had great reviews too & seem to combine a ratchet freehub with strength & a lightweight too. I would value your opinion. Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for watching and your message, We have built quite a few 350s on 511s, they make for a fantastic set, very strong and perfect set for ebikes. when it comes to wheels stick will components that are proven, easy to get parts for and are built but hand. give us a call if you want to discuss further.
@GNX1572 жыл бұрын
Maybe an oversight, but there was no discussion of spoke nipples that I heard. But guys, for long term reliability and durability, get brass spoke nipples. Aluminum will corrode due to galvanic action in the long term. It may cost more and add a few grams of weight, but they’re worth it, especially on an ebike. I’m surprised Dave didn’t talk about this aspect.

@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver, it’s a process of elimination, how old is your bike, is it a single cracking noise, can you replicate the sound by pumping the forks hard. Some bearings feel ok but can still move, when we’re they last changed. Call if you like tomorrow 01422 766086 I will try and advise over the phone.
