Can we just appreciate for how long Pedersen kept that sprint up? This was one of the most impressive wins in this tour so far. He sprinted for nearly the entire time both van der poel and phillipsen sprinted, and he stayed in front of both! Very impressive

It was an amazing long sprint victory. Everyone is talking about Cav, which is indeed a sad story, but Mads is the star here. I was gritting my teeth in dread when Jasper was starting to catch up, but then Mads just kept going strong without giving anymore ground. So glad that Pedersen won instead of Jasper again.

Adept often without leadouts, he has been at TDF half a lifetime, while near peers blossomed and left. Still love Cav in the track disciplines, games that only some others ( coupl Italians come to mind) were willing to mix. Sure many other near-peers were just bigger, hampering TdF or other long stage race appearances, but genes. All the peanut gallery forgets the combination of muscle type, body type, neural reflex, skilled decision management - " when shall i go in this unique situation?" and a few other mental capacities and ability to learn from experience, play a part that few commenters will ever understand. Just watching him a learning experience - and that opportunity is passed up by most commenters. Injury gets us all, repeatedly, but 14 tdfs. There was a great Portuguese guy who was still doing important work for teams at age 44, only cut off by death itself.
@markhill9275

No he isn't the best sprinter of all time,that is out and out wrong! What Classics has he won? How many world sprint titles has he won? How many sixes has he won? No, sorry, that title sits firmly on the shoulders of the Flemish Arrow, Patrick Sercu. As far as sprinting in the Tour, which is only one part of the cycling calendar yes, he is the best. But to say the greatest sprinter ever, that is a very uninformed amateurish comment.Also, he shares the number of stage wins with a Superman who won his alone at the top of mountains, in the TT, dropping the field on the flat, dropping everyone downhill, and outsprinting the best sprinters in the world including Sercu. So although Mark's feat is enormous, it pales into insignificance against the co holder of the record.
@markhill9275
@markhill9275 Жыл бұрын
@briseboy Poulidor was still competitive in le Tour at around 44. At around 40 years old he was the only one able to stay with Merckx in the world title at Montreal. Remember how good Pou Pou was tomorrow on the Puy!
@lukehudson9369
@lukehudson9369 Жыл бұрын
@@markhill9275 Cav won Milan San Remo, Kurne-Brussels-Kurne, Milan-Torinp and Schlderp (3 times,) so he actually has a better Classics pedigree than Sercu. The world sprint title is referring to track cycling, and i think we are reasonably referring to road cycling in this context. Six day racing is a now very obscure arm of cycling, most of the events Sercu won don't even exist so you can hardly expect Cavendish to compete in that area. Your comment about the fact that Merckx who he shares the record with was more versatile is true, but irrelevant to the question of who is the best sprinter. Cavendish also won 20 stages and the points jersey in both the Giro and the Vuelta, so it is not just the Tour where he excelled. So i think the suggestion that a)Cav is the best ever sprinter is an amateurish view and b) that Sercu is clearly better, are highly contentious at best.

I agree. For me Merckx is the greatest of all time, so I'm happy for him to see him remain as the equal record holder, particularly as he gifted a few stage wins to French riders that he could have beaten in his sleep in a final sprint to keep the Tour organisers happy, no doubt in exchange for some additional payments.

Mads launched his sprint along the barrier then deviated 10 feet to the middle! He forces JP to go the long way to get around. A true master class by Mads, subtle and smart.
