UPITN 8 2 79 NYERERE BROADCASTING SPEECH WITH WARNING TO AMIN

(5 Feb 1979) Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere in a speech broadcast to the nation, warned that Ugandan President General Idi Amin is building up his forces on the Tanzanian border. Nyerere said Tanzanian will no longer tolerate threats from Amin and Nyerere revealed that he has given Tanzanian forces the go-ahead to strike against Uganda. But Nyerere added that Tanzania has no interest in overthrowing Amin. He said the Ugandan people must do that themselves.
