@Technews lol so you know Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock, both of whom put out some of the earliest records on Definitive Jux aka El-P's label, but you don't know El-P himself? You've literally never heard of Funcrusher Plus? Possibly the most important album in the history of what became underground hip hop?

He’s the reason you got experimental hip hop like atrocity exhibition, some rap songs, any mike album etc. he’s the reason many rappers like mr lif and more are put on the map. He’s deep and I say that with pride not someone you will go to for bangers or shit necessary. There's a really simple rule of thumb that'll tell you whether a white artist is legit: are they being themself. If they're 'being black' when that's not who they are outside of the music - that's fake. Your Vanilla Ices, Fred Dursts, and Iggy Azelias. People who use hip hop and rapping to express themselves without being something they're not is the way to go. Dan Bull, old Papa Roach, Beastie Boys, Aesop Rock - lov 'em or hate 'em, at least they weren't being something they're not. The anomaly here would be Snow - he's a white Canadian, but he grew up around Jamaican immigrants in housing projects, so the whole Jamaican rap is not part of his heritage, but it is part of his upbringing.
@ECXLEvan
@ECXLEvan 4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you bringing up the "anomaly" here because you're absolutely right but like Snow there are white rappers who's upbringing is more akin to that of the black experience so to call them fake would be unjust. Real recognise real is still alive and true.
@MarkArandjus
@MarkArandjus 4 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Backman Audiences were never part of the conversation. Background was. Vanilla Ice grew up in Dallas and Miami, not a poor neighborhood around black kids, his black-talking persona was fake. He himself later in life said it was stupid and apologized for it, there's a video - look it up.

El-P has always been an inspiration. Both as an artist and as a business model. He was rising as I really started getting into the indie scene. His "independent as fuck" slogan spoke right to my core, because he was doing things his way and being successful at it. Then as an artist, he's crafted a whole sonic universe. No one really sounds like him as a producer, or as a rapper. And watching him evolve from being ill in Company Flow (but letting dense lyrics get in the way of flow), to learning to be dense with much better timing..and seeing that same evolution with his beats after going solo. Even when my musical explorations took me away from hip hop for years, his releases would always be ones I come back to check for and always be impressed by.

Right? He grew up in the trailer park. That's the white version of the projects. He grew up poor as fuck and worked shitty blue-collar jobs. Poor people don't get the education that rich people do. That's because it's all based on property taxes. The poorer your neighborhood, the worse the school generally. Even if the school is predominantly white. The cast system in the US is a 2-tier system. It is based on race AND money. I used to think just like this girl until I moved to Central California and actually met white people in the projects and in the hood.

Saying any white person can just basically walk into corporate America is retarded. I hate the term white privilege because it focuses on race. Of course some people do have privileges, many of them are white. Mostly it's class privilege, hell you can even have language privilege. Do you think a white Polish person with poor English is not going to struggle in a society dominated by the English language? These people have privileges they don't even recognize because they're always focused on whitey

This was a very good convo. As an artist in a group from that era, I worked with a white rapper, Prozack and a black rapper, Marc Stretch. There was this thing also with the white producer. I made a song for Rasco, and he couldn't believe "Keithy" made that? PB Wolf was like, nah Keith makes dope beats. And that's how I got to do the song What It's All About with Rasco. At first, and even Rasco acknowledged it to me last year, he was like, "I didn't think you'd have any hot beats but I was wrong" 😂

I have always idolized and respected EL-P. I still do. I’ve followed his entire career, from Official Records all the way to RTJ. I remember chilling on Ozone Music forums and we used to build with the entire crew before there was even a DefJux. El-P was so humble and kind to his fan base back then. Even though I still love his work, he did change over the years as a person as he started to gain fame, wish he was the same EL-P from the past, but I get it. I still consider him a pioneer and a legend. Someone who I will always idolize. Great interview.

El-P always got respect. Rawkus was a MOVEMENT in the late 90's and his group Company Flow kicked that off. That was how a lot of people even first heard of Talib Kweli. Plus, his label Def Jux was one of the biggest indie hip hop labels in the 2000's. El-P is just appreciated by a different audience now ever since RTJ. ...but in the broader sense, yeah, I still think he's grossly underrated and under many's radar.

A lot of us White dudes in our late 30's -early 50's, grew up in the Hip-Hop culture. We had embraced the culture long before we even knew what the word appropriation meant. Most of us were probably using the N-word with our Black friends, before anyone (including them) knew the deeper history of the word and truly understood that it wasn't a word that should be used by Caucasians, regardless of the circumstances. I respect these two legends for the respectful way they approach this topic. Yes, Macklemore is dope at what he does. So many people clown him, but his skill is undeniable and he has a historical consciousness, of both history and Hip-Hop history. Being White definitely made him commercially viable, as it did with the Beasties and Shady. Now, there are a shit ton of White Rappers who do not get their just due. RA the Rugged Man has been a fucking BEAST for like 25+ years, and most people have no clue of who he is or couldn't name one of his songs. His skin hasn't helped his career, to this point, even though he's lyrically a Top 10 Rapper on any list. Also, ya'll need some Marlon Craft in your life. You can thank me later.
