There's a really simple rule of thumb that'll tell you whether a white artist is legit: are they being themself. If they're 'being black' when that's not who they are outside of the music - that's fake. Your Vanilla Ices, Fred Dursts, and Iggy Azelias. People who use hip hop and rapping to express themselves without being something they're not is the way to go. Dan Bull, old Papa Roach, Beastie Boys, Aesop Rock - lov 'em or hate 'em, at least they weren't being something they're not. The anomaly here would be Snow - he's a white Canadian, but he grew up around Jamaican immigrants in housing projects, so the whole Jamaican rap is not part of his heritage, but it is part of his upbringing.
@ECXLEvan4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you bringing up the "anomaly" here because you're absolutely right but like Snow there are white rappers who's upbringing is more akin to that of the black experience so to call them fake would be unjust. Real recognise real is still alive and true.
@MarkArandjus4 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy Backman Audiences were never part of the conversation. Background was. Vanilla Ice grew up in Dallas and Miami, not a poor neighborhood around black kids, his black-talking persona was fake. He himself later in life said it was stupid and apologized for it, there's a video - look it up.

El-P has always been an inspiration. Both as an artist and as a business model. He was rising as I really started getting into the indie scene. His "independent as fuck" slogan spoke right to my core, because he was doing things his way and being successful at it. Then as an artist, he's crafted a whole sonic universe. No one really sounds like him as a producer, or as a rapper. And watching him evolve from being ill in Company Flow (but letting dense lyrics get in the way of flow), to learning to be dense with much better timing..and seeing that same evolution with his beats after going solo. Even when my musical explorations took me away from hip hop for years, his releases would always be ones I come back to check for and always be impressed by.

Right? He grew up in the trailer park. That's the white version of the projects. He grew up poor as fuck and worked shitty blue-collar jobs. Poor people don't get the education that rich people do. That's because it's all based on property taxes. The poorer your neighborhood, the worse the school generally. Even if the school is predominantly white. The cast system in the US is a 2-tier system. It is based on race AND money. I used to think just like this girl until I moved to Central California and actually met white people in the projects and in the hood.

Watching this interview is good for me. I was listening to RTJ4 and wondering how good of a rapper is EL P really. We all know that killer mike is almost God level MC but El P flow is crazy. His voice isn’t as demonstrative as killer Mike’s but his word play and lyrics are just as intricate. Big ups to El P

Im glad el is finally getting the respect he deserves. True Hip hop Veteran.

El-P always got respect. Rawkus was a MOVEMENT in the late 90's and his group Company Flow kicked that off. That was how a lot of people even first heard of Talib Kweli. Plus, his label Def Jux was one of the biggest indie hip hop labels in the 2000's. El-P is just appreciated by a different audience now ever since RTJ. ...but in the broader sense, yeah, I still think he's grossly underrated and under many's radar.

I'm white and from the south Louisiana 337, BR, N.O.,, and personally I feel more comfortable in hip hop than in "corporate America". And y'all right we gotta come with it and extra to even get a nod. But hey that's hip hop either you got it or you don't no matter what race. Big props to y'all for understanding that we not all culture vultures. I got culture appreciation and pay homage to the masters of the mic that got me hooked on this art. murs, you kill it with tech EVERY time, love your open mind and acceptance

There's so many haters accusing white rappers of appropriation, and on the other hand fanboys who treat eminem like a god. It's refreshing to listen to these guys being totally objective about white rappers, their struggles and benefits.
@CoolHandLukeDuke5 жыл бұрын
A lot of us White dudes in our late 30's -early 50's, grew up in the Hip-Hop culture. We had embraced the culture long before we even knew what the word appropriation meant. Most of us were probably using the N-word with our Black friends, before anyone (including them) knew the deeper history of the word and truly understood that it wasn't a word that should be used by Caucasians, regardless of the circumstances. I respect these two legends for the respectful way they approach this topic. Yes, Macklemore is dope at what he does. So many people clown him, but his skill is undeniable and he has a historical consciousness, of both history and Hip-Hop history. Being White definitely made him commercially viable, as it did with the Beasties and Shady. Now, there are a shit ton of White Rappers who do not get their just due. RA the Rugged Man has been a fucking BEAST for like 25+ years, and most people have no clue of who he is or couldn't name one of his songs. His skin hasn't helped his career, to this point, even though he's lyrically a Top 10 Rapper on any list. Also, ya'll need some Marlon Craft in your life. You can thank me later.
