TIME STAMPS: 3:24 -- Hopsin speaks on the relatively low profile that he's kept while making moves in the industry over the last decade and that's why so many including Talib haven't had the chance to meet him until now. They also get into Hopsin's Panorama City upbringing and his song 'Lunchroom Cipher' being born from his days participating in freestyle circles back at James Monroe High along with rapper SwizZ. Jasmin goes on to tell us about the time she got stranded and broke her finger in Panorama City after a lesbian night in West Hollywood. 7:50 -- Hopsin's online post of his old high school report card of F's and D's is brought up. He gets into why he's proud of it today, his disdain for school throughout his years of attending, only having interest in skateboarding and hip hop, and being sent to special education. They talk about the lack of options in school for those that don't fit the norm and Hopsin's knowing early-on that school wasn't going to be an essential tool on his road to success. They also discuss if 12 years of school is really necessary and how early in life one could master a craft and join the workforce. 14:50 -- Hopsin explains the origin of his song 'Nollie Tre Flip'. They discuss his signature trick by the same name that he performs at his shows and the song's intention of proving that he's legit and shouldn't be labeled as a phony by the skateboarding community who haven't hesitated to call out others for not being down with the culture. Hopsin also speaks on his song 'Sag My Pants' dissing multiple mainstream rappers of the time, he tells if it was really all that personal and gets into his take on how a little bit of early ignorance is healthy for the growth of an artist. 21:08 -- Hopsin's song 'Kill Her' is brought up as they discuss it's context outlining his anger directed at Ruthless Records' CEO Tomica Wright. He speaks of his feelings of what a waste of time and energy it was as they (her) were constantly trying to take control of his persona. Hopsin is also asked about his song 'Story of Mine'. They discuss the song's illustration of his parent's cycle of domestic violence and the suicidal thoughts he experienced growing up. Hop explains how recent therapy has brought him to the realization of how those difficult formative years were the source of so many of the challenges he was dealing with. 31:15 -- Jasmin brings up how surprised she was of Hopsin's friendly demeanor, being such a stark difference to his rap persona. Hopsin goes on to talk about taking a gem from acting class when his teacher reminded him that if he wanted to be a successful rapper he would need to be a great performer. They go on to discuss the saying, "acting is like a lie that tells the truth", Hopsin being an embodiment of his true self with some sauce on it, Hopsin's happiest moments on his records as well as his 'Ill Mind Of Hopsin' series of singles and the coming final installment, 'Illmind X'. 36:04 -- Hopsin facing some backlash from listeners with the release of 'Ill Mind 5' is discussed, with him stating "A real n*gga stays out of jail". Hopsin gets into the irony he was faced with when he ended going to jail a few months after making the song and realizing then how truly messed up the system was. They go on to debate if the majority of rappers who talk about doing jail time are perpetuating for record sales or simply reflecting back the lifestyle that they're living, born out of their environment. 40:24 -- Hopsin tells about his first meeting with rapper Tech N9ne during his visit to the Strange Music headquarters in Kansas City and finding him to be the kindest rapper he's met aside from Logic. Hopsin's making XXL's Freshman 2012 cover is also brought up as he's asked if that exposure helped or hindered his career. They go on to discuss Hopsin's song 'I Need Help' being a literal clear cry for help expressing the pain he was going through at the time as well as his song 'Fort Collins' about his walking out on a show in Colorado when his depression reached a boiling point. 48:30 -- Hopsin's song 'Dream Forever' is brought up as Hopsin gets into how his perspective on love and relationships has evolved over the years. He gets into the issues he's run into while dating while he fully enjoys the freedom he has touring the world and talks about his wanting to deprogram himself from societal norms and avoid any pushes to settle down. He also gets into his experiences attending a ping pong show in Thailand not being what he expected and they all discuss if people should continue using the word 'p*ssy' derogatorily. 54:57 -- Talib brings up 'Ill Mind Of Hopsin 7' being similar to his own 'Give 'em Hell' with their paralel themes of criticizing organized religion. Hopsin speaks on his getting baptized into Christianity back in 2012 as well as his moving away from the faith when he realized he couldn't live his life by those rules. Hopsin talks about keeping his ears open to those that want to speak about their religion and how his spiritual beliefs have always been a constant evolution of thought. They also discuss the negative history as well as the positive roles that Christianity has played in the black community. 1:02:22 -- Hopsin gets into his take on Royce da 5'9" being not just a GOAT emcee but a GOAT all-around human being. They discuss Royce's wisdom and Talib's process of considering how Royce would approach every situation. Hopsin's lyrics to 'Ill Mind of Hopsin 8' is explored as they get into the feud and falling out he experienced with co-founder of Funk Volume Records Damien "Dame" Ritter. Hopsin talks about how the label he founded with Damien is unfortunately now defunct due to egos clashing and communication breakdowns between the two owners. 1:06:07 -- Hopsin speaks on his song 'Kumbaya' and the music video being shot during his visit to Thailand. They also get into the deep level of honesty that he shows on 'Marcus' Gospel', as it remains to be the only song in his catalog that strips away his Hopsin character completely and reveals him speaking from the standpoint of his true self "with no sauce added". They go on to discuss 'You Should've Known' featuring rapper DAX, that track being one of his favorite collaborations to date and they talk about Hopsin directing essentially all of his own videos. 1:08:46 -- Hopsin gets into why he has been steering clear of releasing full albums and sticking to singles. They discuss the short attention span of listeners these days as well as Hopsin's desire to eventually make an album that is structured in a way that it prompts the listener to hear it in it's entirety with each song serving a special purpose. He also speaks on the blood, sweat and tears put into every self-produced single he releases and how it's difficult for him to accept help from others on his projects. The interview closes out with Hopsin giving us the backstory to why he sports those signature white contacts.

The silver lining of the attention span of Singles vs. Albums is that now if you create or "direct" a body of work, it doesn't need to have a concrete length or a concrete number of songs. A 4-song, 7-song, or 9-song project that runs 13-25 minutes (or an hour if it all blends together) can be just as powerful as a classic 16-track album from yesteryear. There is a blessing and a curse of the streaming, consuming listener. You no longer need to fill every second of a compact disc to give the listener their money's worth.

Mad love to Hopsin. Hopsin rules. Been a fan since Hop was on Ruthless Records. Favorite album from Hopsin is Gazing at the Moonlight. Pans in the Kitchen is forever a DOPE ass song and video. Not only Hopsin is a awesome rapper and a awesome lyricist, he is an entrepreneur, a Father, producer and businessman. From Funk Volume and Undercover Prodigy, Hopsin is the truth. The Greatest of all time. Hopsin is a Rap Genius, an music artist in his own right and still doing Frooty Loops on the studio and beats. An avid skateboarder and living an extraordinary life that is straight edge lifestyle. I wrote a poem about Hopsin called Hopsin: Funk Volume King, and it's all love as a fan. Of all of the Rap Artists in the Rap Game, Underground or Mainstream media from Bone thugs-n-harmony, Esham, Tech N9ne, 3rd Bass, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boyz, Fred Durst, Everlast, Ice-T, Insane Clown Posse ICP, 3 6 Mafia aka The Mafia 6ix, and Kid n Play etc. Hopsin is my number one choice, I can relate to Hopsin because I come from a poverty struggle and mental health issues but listening to Hopsin, Esham, Dizzy Wright, and Bone helped me cope with my mental health, but still have to take medication for my bipolar disorder, Autism, paranoia. Hopsin is an and still is a huge influence as a Afro-American male at the age of 36 and in my mid-30's. Hopsin is the King in my opinion in the Hip-hop movement and nation. Stay Up. Undercover Prodigy rules. Hopsin is forever Crunk and he is the truth. Uproxx TV rules and Talib Kweli rules. People's Party with Talib Kweli rules. U need to do Necro next after the Rap legends Bone thugs-n-harmony. Uproxx TV and RoxxxTV rules. I am a Underground Cat who loves Rap and the Hip-hop movement. Doesn't matter if u are Underground or Mainstream in the culture of Hip-hop as long as its ill and fiery DOPE. Mad love to Hopsin. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. God bless Hopsin. Thank God for Hopsin. Peace, love, and Soul Brotha.

@@jtv199513 , true dat. But I been a fan of Hopsin because he is ill on the lyricism and as an Underground Cat, I been bumpin' Hopsin since Funk Volume days and today as an independent Rap Artist of his own label Undercover Prodigy. His last album he did called "No Shame" is DOPE. He even made fun of Mainstream Mumble Trap Rappers get a taste of their own medicine. No offense to Trap music but Hopsin rules. The only Mumble Trap Rappers I would listen to is Ouija Macc and Jarren Benton. Jarren Benton is a mix of Rap lyricism and Trap. But I also like Beat producers like Kato on the Track and Mike "Seven" Summers. Word is bond.

Hopsin have been one of my favorite rappers among Masta Ace, NF, Eminem, Dr. Dre, etc. But what he said about relationships, that he accepted the idea that he can die alone, because he likes his freedom and the life for him is to travel and exploring new cultures... respect! Im listening to this school conversation. I went to high school in NYC in the 80s and I was able to pick a (magnet) school with a major. You only went to a zone (general) school if you couldnt get into the "magnet" schools. NYC had a high school for EVERY area of careers you can think of (including the arts). I think Talib is in my age range and grew up in NYC, so Im not sure if he missed that experience. Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Biggie, Wise (from Stetsasonic) all when to my Engineering high school (even if they dropped out). Big up Westinghouse !!!

I know Hopsin is super dope, I know some of his songs but I can’t say I really bump his music but I def will get on it after this interview. Smart dude. One of the best interviews of people’s party in my opinion

I'm on my husband's KZbin so you can't see who's his fan, but hopsin sees at the skate park, that'll be where I listen to him. Let out all these feelings, I'm so glad to release, everything I built up, all this sorrow in me.
