I've lived in Hawaii for 7 years and pineapple isn't generally eaten by locals, it's definitely a tourist thing. Fruits locals love are mango, guava, lilikoi, papaya cause they grow like crazy all over the islands whereas pineapple doesn't. If you want actual Hawaiian pineapple get Maui Gold, the Dole pineapples are really sour and while yes you'll see a few fields of them by the Dole Plantation on Oahu but most Dole pineapples are shipped in from overseas.
